Rude experience did us a favor! In short: shop elsewhere...and I recommend Winn-Dixie Liquor a short drive down the road.
Background: Upon moving to Florida almost 9 years ago I asked immediately what the Florida laws were with my underage son coming in the store. Every store I went in, including ABC, I was informed he was welcome...he just couldn't touch/handle any alcohol. OK, great, I completely understand. He is/was just hanging out with me anyway...my sidekick.
This ABC location: When this ABC store opened, I asked the same question about my underage son coming into the store and got the same answer, so he always came with me. Moreover, since this ABC location opened it has been our "go-to" store. Prices are higher, but they have the rewards and we could normally always count on a good variety, our items to be in stock, and a pleasant experience (until today, 5 Jun 24). Either my husband and/or I were coming here every 2nd or 3rd week and spending $100-$200 on this and that (and we usually always had/have our son with us). I have highly recommended this store to a lot of folks, especially since the manager did special orders for me. The staff "was" always so friendly. I should have probably written a 5-star review long before now and this would have just been an update. Things do change after all.
Which brings me to why I am writing this 1-star review today--one experience can make a huge difference. We walked in the store as usual with our son and I noticed the employee behind the counter gave us an odd look, I didn't recognize him...but, oh well. We did our shopping, then went to check out. The employee asked for my membership number, then my husband's ID, or so I thought. Then we were all confused, even my husband--turns out he was asking for my sons, but he wasn't buying anything. Of course, he looked at us and said he wasn't 21, duh, we know...and now I know why he gave us that odd look when we entered the store...this extremely rude old man employee knew exactly what he was doing. The employee said "he" (meaning my son) couldn't buy anything...again, duh, we know--he's not buying anything. He said Florida state law says this and that. OK...we've been in this store A LOT and never had this happen...and again, we asked the question very, very, very early on and we frequent this store A LOT (or should I say "used to")...we were just in here a few weeks ago. So, we told our son to go outside and the extremely rude employee said it didn't work that way...he wouldn't sell us anything. So, my husband made the call for us to just leave...we couldn't buy anything anyway, and the extremely rude employee was getting nastier.
We are puzzled...we've always asked at every store and we asked long ago at this one. Why were we given incorrect information? Why hasn't anyone said anything before? And again, we WERE always in this store A LOT. The rude employee had pointed at a sign and I took a picture of it since I hadn't seen it before. I had taken a picture of a new sign out front too upon entering, but didn't read it until after the experience above. I understand laws and rules, maybe although we always asked the question, they are just now enforcing it...??? I don't know. But what I do know is, there was no need to be so rude, nasty, and mean. He knew when we entered the store that our son wasn't 21, he said nothing, let us shop and that was probably the reason for the odd look. Why? Why not tell us upon entering so my son could have stayed outside and we could have had a nice conversation instead? We get it, but why put us through that? I'm guessing because he looked forward to being nasty and it gave him some sort of personal charge. It was truly a strange interaction. But now we know.
I won't say "never" as far as returning to this store, but for now, they've lost a frequent customer, but I'm sure they don't care and it doesn't matter. And it's not because of the law, I/we get it!!! It's because of the actions of this rude employee.
We still needed to pick up the items. The St Johns ABC rude employee did us a favor ya'll! We went to Winn-Dixie Liquor (https://www.yelp.com/biz/winn-dixie-liquor-saint-johns?hrid=UV53FX7VJeft1TF0ZWlApw) and not only got all the items we were going to buy at ABC, but we got them CHEAPER. Woot! Skip ABC, shop at Winn-Dixie, or any place else...no one needs to deal with "rude", and/or "nasty" employees...and saving money is a plus during these expensive times! read more
