Located in a shopping centre, just outside the old walls of the city (il centro storico); in…read moreretrospect I felt a little sad only to have discovered this large, fantastically well-stocked supermarket shortly before it was time for my stay to come to an end. (That will teach me not to be so wary of large shopping centres!) Probably the largest supermarket in the town, it's light, bright and packed with (almost) all one could desire (at least in the supermarket context) I was especially impressed with the fantastic selection of freshly-cooked, vacuum-packed vegetables and pulses. I loved their deep, dark, green spinach leaves and chick peas (so different to their canned counterparts) - a great time & energy-saving route to taste and freshness. The range of fruit and veg were also brilliant here, along with a vast and diverse deli section. Also, a good place to visit, for a comprehensive health & beauty choice and for tantalising little authentic local goodies to bring home for gifts or treats.

Part of an Italian chain, this no-frills supermarket runs along the lines of the now globally…read morefamiliar Lidl. It's particularly good for top quality, very well-priced fresh fruit and vegetables - with a choice of salads (ready-packaged and/or by weight) that I only wish were as easily accessible closer to home. Also brilliant for fresh nuts and dried fruits. This fairly spacious branch additionally has a deli counter, with lots of enticing ready-prepared mains, side dishes and regional specialities - plenty to keep both veggies and carnivores happy and well-fed. Staff are very pleasant and helpful (although it's preferable if you can communicate in Italian); they're quite briskly efficient though - especially close to lunch-time - when they close for a couple of hours break.
