Stadium next door has a well kept large gym and they will even let you have a run round the track if there's no-one using it. As it's on the edge of Middleton Park it's a great place to run and swim, outskirts of leeds so rarely busy.

I haven't skated there, but swam with the kids many times. From a parents perspective, it's far too cold! The main pools aren't too bad but the baby pool is absolutely freezing and it's a little dark and dreary as well. The changing rooms are a bit hit-and-miss: pretty much what you get in any swimming pool of this era, and a little dirty. They're mixed male & female but there aren't many that are big enough for parents and kids to share. They seem to open the big slides and outdoor pool at random times - perhaps there is a pattern to it, but whenever I've been there I've been told that certain features are closed due to staffing. A bit disappointing when you've paid to take the kids there and the particular slide they want is closed. I understand, however, that it is currently closed for refurbishment (Nov 08) so I'm really hoping that it is greatly improved when it re-opens as the basics are there and eldest loves it. It's worth a visit, but go with fairly low expectations and hopefully be pleasantly surprised by it!

Having only ever used two facilities here they are all I can comment on. Childrens parties: We had a bouncy castle which was a great hit with the kids, and then went into a room in which there was a full platter of finger foods and a birthday cake. They do offer different kinds of kids party such as roller disco's. Swimming: There are two pools; a small heated childrens pool and a larger pool. The small pool is brilliant for bringing babies and toddlers swimming and is regularly monitored that there is only a certain number of people in the pool to avoid over crowding. The larger pool is often sectioned off into two ares, a lanes swimming area and then an open pool area for the people who don't wish to swim in lanes. The changing rooms are normally quite clean and tidy although the air conditioning can make it a bit cold. There are 4 showers in the female changing rooms as well as a couple of toilets. Lockers are provided for everyone to use and cost £1 which you get back at the end of your session.

It's aimed at families really - The main pool isn't designed for serious swimming with it's lagoon shape, mostly shallow water and frequent blasts from the wave machine. However, it's a fun place to take kidswho'll enjoy splashing about, and there is a reasonably impressive slide. There is also a jacuzzi and a small pool for swimming lessons. The changing rooms, whilst nothing special, are quite adequate - it's mixed sex but in cubicles, and there are also family changing rooms. The leisure centre has lots to offer in addition to the pool - squash and badminton courts, a small gym, swimming lesson, various aerobics and martial arts classes and a cafe which overlooks the pool, its smell of chips whetting the hunger od the swimmers. I think you can hire out the hall and a bouncy castle for kids' parties, and they do a roller disco which is pretty fun. I can reccommend the Rookies life saving classes, which children and teenagers can attend to learn about water safety and badic first aid. The first part of the class is theory, followed by practical work in and around the pool - and you can work towards a recognised qualification.

A purpose built swimming and sports centre named after the Bradford boxing champion. Easy access…read morefrom the M606/M62 motorways although if there has been an event on it can be difficult to get in or out of the car parks. The usual car park is a strange shape with hills all round it. In my view it would have been better to have disposed of some of these hills. Inside there is a big swimming pool which is an irregular shape. There is one part of it though that you can do conventional lengths in. The rest of it is more of a fun pool. There are various waterfalls and there are two good slides which you either pay separately for or are forced to pay in with the swimming at some sessions. There are always plenty of attendants about. There is a seating area next to the pool for doting parents/grandparents etc or just if you fancy a break from swimming. There is access to the cafe but it isn't very close by and you cannot go in your swimming gear. There are various sports halls of different sizes, a fully-equipped gym and squash courts. The main hall also hosts large sports functions, computer fairs and is used for counting at the elections. This has tiered seating at one end. They do a range of classes such as Pilates, kickboxing, karate, spinning etc. There is/was a climbing area but I am not sure if this is now dyfunct as I haven't seen anyone using it for some years now. The changing rooms are below standard in my opinion. They are cold, the toilets aren't very clean, the ceilings are usually festooned with soggy toilet paper bombs that have dried out (nice!). The changing area for the dry sports are often littered with rubbish and the showers in this part aren't very private ie male attendants have walked through while female sportspeople are showering. There is no door to the shower area. The cafe has the usual chips with everything type fare and buns and biscuits. They do wave to those who are trying to be healthy by providing fruit and basic uninspiring salads and jacket potatoes (although I have often found they have run out of these). There is also a bar and function room within the building but it is nothing to write home about.

Firstly, there are loads of car parking spaces so there will always be somewhere to park. The range of sports offered is excellent. Firstly, the pool is seen as probably the major attraction. They have a coupld of slides available for those just wanting to have a good time but there's also space for those just wanting to get some exercise (although I'd suggest not going on a peak time at the weekend as kids parties tend to be very popular). I have participated in a number of activities here, rollerblading, indoor/outdoor football, basketball.. you name it and they are likely to have it. The facilities are not the best in the world but to me that's not really that important a factor. I see this place as somewhere where you can have some fun. Whether you want to go to get exercise or prefer to go with others and have fun Richard Dunn's is a quality venue.

Initially, as we had designs on playing squash, we decided to try Holt Park Leisure Centre but failed to ever find that seemingly mythical place. We decided in the end to try Kirkstall as, although they are renovating the squash areas etc, we could swim once a week in the interim. Ah. What a find. It is easy to get to (if you miss rush hour traffic) and nicely laid out. It's a bit of a mission to find the entrance on your first try - go round the front of the car park and follow the route to the door all the way round - but obviously, once you've been there that initial time this should cease to be a problem. Swimming cost around £3.80 (I can't quite remember) which was a shock since the last time I went, albeit it was 8 plus years ago, it cost me about £1.50. The swimming facilities themselves are reasonable. The toilets were certainly in need of a clean and not fully stocked of toilet roll, which is always a bummer. (Pun-tastic...!) The showers, which you are required to utilise pre-swim, were a little on the cold side but warm up after a minute. The pool itself is not huge and not deep but is perfectly adequate for swimming lengths to keep fit - which is what it's all about! Happily, despite the variable of other people which can't be helped, I managed about 24 lengths in about 15 minutes. Yippee! It would have been more had I not had to try three lockers before I could finally get the key out to secure my things. On my first trip here I was really rather pleased, hopefully it is not just the natural seretonin boost that I've gotten from my first exercise in yonks!
