Abbey Bar is located in Deland, we recently visited with some friends who live closer to the area. This was quite the drive for us in Winter Garden, so I don't think it would be a place we would go a lot but we did enjoy our time there. This will definitely be a place to go when we visit our friends. This is what the name implies, a bar, nothing else. They have tables, seating at the bar and high-top tables. They have a few food options, mostly appetizers with a few sandwiches and quesadillas. We did not get any food since we had just eaten dinner. Apparently, their cowboy candy is the most popular item, its candied jalapenos over cream cheese with crackers. Maybe next time. They do sell bottle beer; it is really what most of the alcohol consists of. They do have their menu divided into categories so if you know what you are looking for it helps. They also have draft beer which rotates throughout the year, so there might be something new on the menu. I personally am not a huge fan of specialty beer like sours, and porters, but my husband is so he really enjoyed looking through the different options. I honestly cannot remember the two beer my husband tried but I know one had a really high ABV and the other one was really sour. He seemed to enjoy both, so I guess that's good. I choose to get a glass of wine instead. They have only a few wine options but also have mead. I have never had it before, but our friends were very much fans of it. The wine selection is small, but I just went with a Moscato. All in all, this is a fine bar if you are in the area. I would say if you were not a beer fan this might not be for you. They do not make any liquor style drinks only beer and wine. All in all, not bad, we would for sure go back when visiting friends in the area. read more

We were here for dinner after an afternoon at the DeLand original music festival (22nd annual). We had never eaten here before. I somehow managed to completely forgot to take pictures until afterwards. I can strongly recommend the Medittarean platter. It has lots of items and even with 4 of us sharing it, there was some leftover. 2 people also had the cowboy candy (candied jalapeños and cream cheese). For entrees, they all had the grilled cheese sandwiches and I had a quesadilla. It was the one with chicken, bacon and cheese. It was a nice big one and I had some to home to eat for lunch, but if I hadn't had apps. I would have eaten it all. Overall, this is a great, full liquor, beer, wine and mead bar. read more

Nice little bar tucked away in downtown DeLand. They feature a wide variety of Mead, along with a handful of Belgians (some Trappist, so yay!) they have Orval, which is one of my favorites. We have come to the Abbey a few times and always a great experience. You can choose to sit at the bar or any of the high top tables or couch areas. It's a smaller bar but has a good atmosphere and feel to it. We were greeted right away and offered menus. The menus have a lot to choose from from Meads, wines and beer. It's well know as a Mead bar so I highly recommend trying one of the locally brewed Meads. I had the Birthday Cake Mead and it was very smooth and delicious. We only had time for one drink as we had dinner reservations but we will definitely make this a frequent spot to visit! For this who smoke cigars they have those too. read more

I came here specifically because I wanted to try some of that Odd Elixir's Key Lime Mead which is on tap here because what could possibly be more Florida? And having drank it let me tell you, that's-a mead, baby! They had a whole variety of flavored meads actually, which I will need to come back and try at some point. Great price points too, but since I'm from New York pretty much all beer prices outside of the city are 'great price points' in my book. "Woah, a beer that's not $10? What is this magic?" We also managed to stumble into a stand up comedy night, which I gotta say the headliner left a lot to be desired but the rest of it was amusing. The best part was not only was this bar PACKED for the comedy night, but the comedians had the attention of the ENTIRE BAR. Nice place downtown Deland. We were heading to the Elusive Grape but they are closed on Sunday and Monday. My wife pointed this out and we went in. A very large and nice selection draft and bottle beer. Wine by the glass also a very nice selection. From the looks of the menu the men must come for the beer and the ladies come for the sweet white wines. Not as many selections on the red dry wines. The bartender was pleasant and knowledgeable. - To be honest, I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I do enjoy the activity socializing with others in a lively atmosphere. That's what Abbey Bar seems to be about, good spirits among other good spirits of patrons tipping glasses and singing, "Cheers..." as though the show was back on the air. On the night the girlfriend and I were there, I decided to down a mead, a beverage I had not tried as of yet. After cautiously sipping the strange concoction, I concluded it was worth the resounding buzz, as it was a mighty fine spirit deserving of my utmost attention. What completed the rest of the evening was off in a small corner was a stage where some folksy live music played off in the far background. Which I found was a pretty cool way to effortlessly combine coffee house appeal with an alcoholic edge of an 80's Judd Nelson flick. And as a kid of that particular time warp, I can appreciate the small details that add to the St Elmo's Fire vibe of the place. Also, because the mead I had was proof I need to build up a better tolerance for social drinking, I definitely concur that I need to make a return trip here for another round of good times. read more

So much fun! Food was amazing! But the staff was a little...not rude....not slow....but a bit socially awkward? We had about 4 different people coming to the table to wait on us, and none of them felt comfortable enough to carry on any type of conversation. At one point, the one waiter "Drake" was asked what his name was and he said "Drake, what can I get you?" When my mom said she wanted an alcoholic beverage, she then asked him if he was the son of the lady who was in a wheelchair and he said "Yes, I'll get your drinks..." then the younger girl (didn't get her name), was superrrrr awkward. Didn't look you in the eye, and seemed extremely timid. It was almost uncomfortable being there, but we stayed to play Drag Bingo. I'm glad we did, but I don't know if I'll go back. I felt like it was just all very strange. I liked some of the other people who were there, and the drag queens were super funny and fun, but the staff...eh. We are a retired couple and we love the Abbey. It's more of a bar atmosphere than the Elusive Grape, but the service is 10,000 times better. It's comfortable, and we like hanging out with a younger crowd. It's pet friendly, and customer friendly. The food is decent, and the value for what you get is good. They were always super attentive to me, even when I was the DD and wasn't drinking (you really can't say that for every place, unfortunately.) From a DeLand High grad that got out of this sleepy little town as fast as possible- I love this place!! I do not feel like I am in DeLand; but the pub fits right into the friendly small town. The Abbey really gives me a reason to stroll downtown when I visit my parents. The selection of beer is atypical for the area. Witty staff are smart on the brews served. The yummies are low key bar snacks- not the best, but I'm not going for the grub. The atmosphere is friendly and offbeat. My husband and I make efforts to reach our weekend destination by Friday afternoon. Happy hour is an interactive "beer exchange" I have never seen this program at another bar. They pick select beers and wines as "stocks", the price for each selection varies based on how often it is ordered. I never visit DeLand without enjoying a yummy craft or import beer here! read more

One of Deland's hidden gems. This place has literally the finest beer selection in Central Florida, geared heavily towards traditional Belgians and American craft brews. The prices are a little bit higher than what I've seen around Central Florida ($5-8 for bottles), but to get this quality in Deland is entirely worth it. The staff are quite friendly, and are all knowledgeable about the beer list--name your style, and they'll show you something that you'll probably like. The bar opens onto the street, which makes for a great experience on cool nights. Food is a recent addition to the menu, and I could not be happier. Tasty paninis and such, made with fresh, quality ingredients. The meat and cheese plate, a cutting board full of cold cuts, cheese, apple and condiments will keep your crowd of increasingly tipsy friends happy as the night wears on. We have made 2 special trips from Orlando to The Abbey in the past year. If you are a fan of Redlight, but find yourself a little east of town, this place will be a welcome sight. This lovely bar serves flatbread pizzas along with some mighty fine beer, wine, and mead. It's worth the occasional drive through Deland on the way back from the beaches, but be warned if you want to hang around late; they do close up shop earlier in this town, so don't park it at midnight on a Sunday and expect to have a lot of time to hang out. Very good selection overall, and a knowlegdeable staff round it out wonderfully. We will definitely make another return trip the next time we're in the area. read more

Who doesn't like being served great wine and beer by a beautiful Aussie redhead? I'm not entirely sure there is too much else that needs to be said. The guy playing jazz was a bit creepy, but other than that, it was awesome. The selections of wine and beer are fantastic. I really wasn't expecting such a large selection of beer types and geographies. I plan on stopping back in just to keep on trying the beers next time I come back through Deland. Another great piece to this is that he owner of Abbey also owns the restaurant across the street and the waitresses run back and forth between the places with food and drink. This is tough...if you're a true beer lover the Abbey offers a fantastic selection and staff knowledge. Interiors are nice and warm but uninspired. (Though I'm an architect so take that for what you will...) But for food and service we found it pretty lacking. They seemed to take our food order as a bother. Went in not actually knowing what to expect. What we found was a bar that people could come to and expand their palettes. I had a mead and my girlfriend had a grapefruit beer. I stopped in here one night on my way back to Gainesville from Daytona Beach and had meant to review this fine establishment since then but kept forgetting to do so. Verily, it's a bar that deserves a review and it's also a fine credit to DeLand. Every college town should have a bar this refined and yet welcoming and keeping later hours every day of the week (open to 2am on weekend save Sunday when they close at 9pm and open the rest of the week until 1am). The bar itself is warm and cozy but nothing too special--certainly clean and well-maintained but not betraying any grand effort to impress or stand out as a destination bar or such. The crowd the night I was there was mainly locals, probably as it was summer and most Stetson students would have been away. One couple was talking to a woman they knew about dogs while four men were talking about politics and the upcoming elections. I could imagine when the Fall term for Stetson was in full swing, the number of students would outweigh that of local folks but can see this bar being very popular with both and I was myself made to feel very at home by the bartenders and patrons alike. It is that type of bar atmosphere we all hope for in a pub-like bar and it seemed very honest and true. I had a beer--I forget which one but their craft beer list is extensive--and the cheese board. This came with several outstanding cheeses, dried figs, hummus, and other goodies. It was a generous serving for about ten dollars and put together in a very appealing manner. There was also a meat and cheese plate and a variety of other foods on the menu and if the cheese board was a proper reflection of the general caliber of things here, it's a fine place to eat as well as drink. I cannot speak for the wines, but the bartenders certainly knew their beers and it was a hard choice to make on just one after scanning the pages of the beer list and asking the bartenders for suggestions: there were just too many options at hand. I will certainly be back next time I am in the area. Again, DeLand is very fortunate to have this establishment and I cannot really think of much if anything that could be improved upon. read more

I met up with friends here on a Friday night not too long ago. Not being a wine connoisseur I cannot speak to the quality of the wine, but it hit the spot for me. My husband had a few interesting beers that he enjoyed as well. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, the live music was a cover band that night and they were spot on. I think the only issues I had with this bar is that it was a bit pricey and they ran out of every drink that our small group was enjoying which was slightly annoying.
