There was a time. Back before Wal-Mart and Target supplied us with endless aisles of crappy brand new junk, in the name of saving money. When there were two types of purchases, new and used. New tended to be good quality and retail price. Used tended to be the same stuff, but a little, well, used. Because of that condition, the price was lower. That was a time when I had less money, had recently moved to the Akron area and was glad to listen to any ideas the wife had to save some money on plates, cups, small furniture, etc. Abbey Ann's was one of the places that got some of my hard earned jack. You have to be selective. But you can find nice stuff, at a great price. Tonight, we were looking for large shutters to use as room dividers in our house. Stopped in at Abbey's on a lark and sure enough, they had them. Exactly what we wanted. The wife thinks we paid about a third of what one would have cost new, for all three. I do agree that the Cuyahoga Falls Ave store was the better of the two, but it appears to be closed. Oh, and the smoke is still there. read more

If you're like me, you've outsurvived some of your older relatives who lived through the Great Depression before this one. And if those old packrats, Gramps and Grammy, have gone to hang with Jesus, you've probably had to help clean out the crap that fills each corner of every room, attic and basement. Some people throw all the material nostalgia away, others keep some of it, or even Goodwill it. Everything else ends up at Abbey Ann's. Visiting this place might well be a way to relive memories of your grandparents. It's packed to the brim with shit, so it just might remind you of summer days sifting through the clutter to help find Grammy's keys. But then you look at the prices, and you can almost hear Gramps wheezing about how the country's going to hell in a handbasket... complete with cigarette smoke! (No, apparently the smoking ban does NOT apply to family-owned shit-peddlers). I'd call Abbey Ann's a junk store, but that'd be bordering on being an insult to the legacy of Fred Sanford. It's a store that sells people's junk, but the people selling said junk have delusions of grandeur inspired by watching too many episodes of Antiques Roadshow. I guess the store is relevant to a certain class of folks... Wanna spend $150 for an old 20" console TV? $10 for a toaster that might not work? You can do that here! But the real service provided by Abbey Ann's is that there's a lot of crap to rummage through if you're broke and really really really really bored. Hey, it happens. As the old saying goes, there's a sucker born every minute. That Abbey Ann's sells enough to stay open for our browsing pleasure is living proof of this adage... and it'll give you odd comfort that other peoples' Grammy and Gramps also hoarded way too much shit. read more

So unorganized and crammed with stuff. They need to scale it back. There is so much stuff stacked all over it's difficult to move and I'm not a big person. Also the place smells of stale cigarettes. Purchased a nearly 200 dollar item and was told within 6 months by the manufacturer that it was counterfeit. Could not get a reply for almost a year, when I finally spoke to someone (Lee) I told him the facts and he seemed not to care, virtually accused me of plotting a year and a half scheme to deceive them (although I hadn't asked for any money, just gave them the facts!) and when I questioned the moral aspect of not taking any responsibility he told me he had taken plenty of ethics classes. I guess you can't learn ethics in a class. As I cannot in good conscience re-sell the item, my only recourse is to try and save someone else from a similar experience with this unscrupulous company. It seemed like a nice old-fashioned family run company, I was sad to see that there was no "old-fashioned" concern, manners, or integrity. I will also report to the Better Business Bureau. read more

I have shopped at Abbey Ann's for 20 years. I love mid-century modern decor and furniture - and this is the "go to" place for these treasures. Now that "Mad Men" has incited near frenzy over 1960s modernistic momentoes one can barely purchase a starburst clock on eBay for under $100.00. Not so at Abbey Ann's! A stroll through the aisles takes you back to a simpler time (including the prices). Everything is negotiable and I have found several rare items here that I covet. Sometimes I stop at Abbey Ann's to cheer up - to be surrounded by items that people have touched and used and loved. If you love nostalgia and are looking for a hard-to-find item from yesteryear that captures your heart this is your store. read more

I love to thrift, Abbey Anne's is the best, all of their stores are full of wonderful things at reasonable prices. I've purchased many useable items that have filled my home with pleasure. Folks who like new things or don't appreciate the older antiquey things just don't get thrifting. When I lived in Akron, I'm a native who relocated to South Carolina, I shopped these stores on a daily basis. The personnel was always gracious and serivce minded, offering discounts and would negotiate on prices. I agree with Pablo concerning the smoking, don't agree with anything else. read more

I love Abbey Ann's. They will bargin with you and cut you a deal. My Husband and I have picked up some great furniture there, it just needs a little TLC. Same style chairs in a store that sells new furniture was 250.00 per chair- not so at Abbey Ann's we got a whole set for way less than that. If you like to search for treasure then go- you never know what you might find. Granted yes some of it is junk, but one man's junk is another man's treasure. As for the people who complain about the cigarette smell, yes the owner smokes and I have smelled it, but I have only seen her to it outside where to my knowledge it is still legal. Remember that it is a Used goods store and there are lots of scents. If you don't like it don't go there- simple as that. In the meantime I am going treasure hunting. read more

My favorite of any Abbey Ann's! Although they are run separately, they are just always so welcoming and helpful. Willful to work with me for anything I've gone there for; bed frame, tables, dog cage, even just household appliances and decorations. Son bought a dog cage today. He quickly found it was too small. Paid 90+ for it. Called the store and was told they would buy it back from him, if he got there before they closed at 7. He took it back to the store within an hour of buying it. When he got there, the offered him $30.00 for the cage! THIRTY DOLLARS. I called and complained. who would have thought that when someone says we will buy it back, that they would only offer you ONE THIRD of what you paid for it within an hour. The receipt he was given does not state returns are not permitted. Has anyone else had this kind of issue with them? Am contacting BBB in morning. read more

Seller beware!!! We had a horrible experience and are left feeling completely taken advantage of! We began this ill-fated journey two months ago by following all the instructions listed on the website to sell your belongings. We had to continually follow-up with them by both email and calling (and leaving voicemails as rarely did anyone pickup). They really seemed in no hurry to do business with us even though one of the requirements they request is your timeline - when do you need your stuff sold by - and we told them three weeks tops. They want you to email them pics of all your items at which point they are supposed to offer you a price for everything. We emailed them the pictures (and a month later) we still didn't have a price or any further communications from them. After we pushed for a price they finally agreed to set up a date for pickup. Three weeks later they came with a truck without an agreed upon price, which we thought was odd as they state they won't pickup until that piece is settled. Their window for pickup was 1-2pm and, of course, they didn't arrive until 2:30pm. My husband showed them all the pieces we were wanting to sell (a large antique solid wood coffee table, a new bar-style dining room table that seats six with wrought iron and marble charger, two large computer desks with matching chairs and a full mattress and box springs set). The guy said he'd take everything except the mattress set because according to him the mattress was stained. It wasn't. It was sun-faded from being in our attic/storage room for a number of years but we let that go not wanting to argue the point. The pictures we sent via email clearly showed the lightening color distortions. But everything was clean, odor free and in good condition. After he loaded everything the guy went to leave and my husband had to stop him to inquire about the price. The guy feigned innocence stating "Oh, I thought you were giving us this." Giving!! An antique table and a new dining room set?!? Of course my husband corrected this notion and then the negotiating (which I use loosely because we walked away with little and they got everything) began. The guy shrugged and offered us $60 for the lot. When my husband scoffed the guy said ok then what were you thinking. We said $200 sounds fair (which is BEYOND FAIR). He countered with "I'll give you $75." At this point my husband is exhausted from the day and exasperated from this unbelievable experience telling him not good enough. The guy tells us $100 final offer. With all our stuff loaded on the truck and us being out of time to get rid of the furnishings what choice did we have? Abby Ann's one (won) - us zero. They knew they had us over a barrel and they took advantage of it and us! Please, please, proceed with caution when dealing with this business because they may not be fair with you, or offer you good customer service and may just leave you feeling taken, sick and heartbroken over the whole thing. read more

I loved this place! I went with my mom on a Friday morning, it wasn't crowded and we had plenty of time to wander down the (what seemed to be) endless aisles. If you like this kind of stuff its a great place to at least check out. I managed to pick up 2 vintage 1950's Pyrex mixing bowls, which are worth at least $50 together, for around $6 total (each was marked at $8, negotiate they'll come down on their prices.) They also have a wall of vinyl records, you will have to thumb through a bunch of crap but you may land on a gem or two. I walked away with a mix vinyl of Big Brother and the Holding Company, Poco and few others from that era of music for a quarter. My mom and I really enjoyed it, there were people working that would take your items and hold them at the register while you continued to browse. We were also nicely greeted as we walked in and the guy behind the counter was very friendly and easy to talk to. Theres everything from knick-knacks to records to tables & chairs and just about everything in between. I would definitely recommend Abbey's to any thrifter who has a few hours to spare. Will definitely be going back soon. read more
