Although I loved my old chiropractor, I really needed to see someone who was closer to where I live. My friend Meg referred me to Dr. Toyooka and I was sold once she told me you get a 40-minute massage AND adjustment for a $25 HMSA co-pay. I'm willing to try anything when full body massage is involved! First off, Dr. Toyooka is awesome! He's super mellow and he uses an activator to adjust you. If you're used to going to a chiropractor who uses a more traditional method, an activator might seem like it's not doing anything but I really love it! He even adjusts my jaw which is the best feeling ever! Usually I get my massage before my adjustment which helps loosen up my muscles. My only warning about the massage is: 1) The massage rooms are not your fancy spa experience. Expect a "homey" feel, kind of like going to your Aunty Gail's house in Pearl City. I know this sounds like a weird description, but you let me know how you'd describe it once you go there. 2) Not all masseuse are created equal and you'll have to try a few of them to find who you really like. Everyone is really nice, but my massage experience has definitely run the gamut of two to five star experiences. I finally found a woman I really enjoy massaging me and now I refuse to see anyone else. Since seeing Dr. Toyooka regularly and upping my workout game, I'm super happy to report I rarely suffer from debilitating back pain. And when I feel my body aching I am quick to schedule an appointment to take care of my health. I have actually been seeing him for many years now, so this review is a long time in coming. Dr. Jesse really knows his profession, understands the human body and its muscles/ligaments, and is very skillful. His A.R.T. method is quite exceptional, basically he works the muscles that are causing the pain and keeping your body from healing. He run specials from time to time allowing you to buy a block of six appointments at a cheaper rate. His office is located in Kaimuki, on the second floor of an office building on Harding. He's got two parking stalls located in the lot. You turn in off of Harding at the sign that says "no public parking", and then you'll see two spots that are designated for Diamond Head Chiropractic patients. Tldr; if you're looking for a chiropractor with skills, doctor Jessie will help you. He really is that amazing!

I wanted to share an update to my previous review based on how my experience progressed over time…read more Unfortunately, the quality of care declined significantly. Appointments were often delayed or running behind, which I can understand to some extent. However, what became more concerning was the change in the sessions themselves. What were once 20-40 minute, attentive treatments shortened to around 10-15 minutes. On multiple occasions, the doctor answered phone calls on his mobile phone during my appointment, and talked during my treatments with the phone in one hand. In one instance, he remained on the phone for nearly the entire session, speaking with what sounded like a repair service, while performing my adjustment distracted and with only one hand. That experience was ultimately a turning point for me. Despite this, I continued going for some time because I was in significant pain and had not found another provider. However, the treatments no longer provided the relief I had previously experienced, while remaining expensive. During one visit, I expressed that I was leaving still in pain, and instead of adjusting further as had been done in the past, I was simply told to schedule another appointment. After eventually seeking care elsewhere, I learned through my insurance company that I had been overcharged consistently. The interaction I had over the phone with the provider felt confrontational and threatening. Although a refund was ultimately issued, I do not feel at ease returning to the office. I'm disappointed that my experience ended this way, especially since my earlier visits had been so positive. I hesitated to update my review, but I feel it's important to share in case it helps others make informed decisions about their care.

After receiving chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic massages I am a true believer in the healing powers of both of these in combination. Dr Awakuni obviously gets all his referrals the old fashioned way because the office has been popping both times I've gone in, but it's run very smoothly and I felt like I had ample time for the Dr to answer all my questions. I had a lot of questions. I even repeated some questions and asked to film him when he was demonstrating on the model skeleton, then I asked to film him demonstrating giving me my exercises. His spine is very healthy lol. Also as you know, I don't take body advice from just anyone! I'm a dance teacher, dancer, and lifelong mover. From the first session, he could tell within a few seconds that my thoracic ranges of motion are completely stuck because of trap muscle hypertone, that my lower lats aren't firing properly, and dozens of other details about my patterns of movement I have been waiting my whole life (ok maybe a few years) to hear! It's been 2 days since receiving my program and I already feel improvement (I have been doing like 10x the recommended amount of the exercises-however I did ask him 3 different ways if it were possible to overdo it and he basically said no!) Five star experience. Highly recommend. Lia is the office mgr--I think she is basically like one of my besties named V. Meaning she is ON TOP OF EVERYTHING. it seems she is doing the work of 5 people maintaining the office (it's just her and dr) . And she is so cheerful the entire time. I am very impressed. SO GOOD.

If you need a chiropractor- see Dr. Dan! He will have you feeling great in no time!…read more I just saw him today, after not seeing him in over three years. When I first moved to the island, I went to him for my neck and back issues. At the end of my treatment plan, we looked at my x-rays and I remember seeing about an inch difference in my spine. It had started out crooked and he straightened it out! No wonder I was having neck, shoulder, and back pain. I was glad to be feeling better. Lately, I have been experiencing an annoying kink in my neck, along with tight shoulder and back issues. I decided to look up Dr. Dan again. I found that he moved to a brand new building. He is on the second level, above Lin's Hawaiian snacks, next to Reneaux MediSpa. They have a pay parking lot and street parking(meters). Since I am one who is annoyed to have to pay to park, I just park in the Nordstrom Rack lot and walk across. As you walk into the office, you are greeted by Dr. Dan's office manager(Roz), who offers you a cup of tea. They serve a different flavor every day. Today, as I was leaving, I was offered a tea to-go. I thought that was nice. The office has a tranquil feel to it. On my first visit, they took new x-rays and I stood on a device that looked like a scale, but showed that my body is off by 15%. I seem to stand heavy on my right side. I never should have stopped seeing him because now it seems that I have to start the process all over, to get back to where I was. Oh, well. My dumb Kaiser Added Choice insurance plan doesn't cover chiropractic care, so I opted for his discount plan where you can pay ahead for so many visits and get a discounted rate. I paid with my flexible spending account. This is getting long, so I will just mention a few more highlights. Dr. Dan not only does the adjustments on you, but he throws in different techniques, including pressure-point type things. It's a small cozy office. Be prepared to wait your turn because Dr Dan gives each client special attention. He is not one of those "a patient is just a number" kind-of-doctors. He really cares about his patients. If you are not in the waiting area, you may be waiting on an adjustment table, as he works on another client that is on a table next to you. I can't wait until my next visit!
