I moved to Nelson for a three-month period and the City Boy in me started to panic when I went searching for some small metallic disc magnets and couldn't find any in Nelson's various drug and knick-knack stores. Mind you, I couldn't find them at Cowan's either, but this is as close to a Staples as you will get in Nelson. Family-owned with plenty of helpful staff, Cowans has been around since 1972 and does a great deal to support the East Kootenays. The business actively promotes recycling and regularly donates to the Food Bank. While they may be lacking supererogatory items such as small metallic disc magnets, they do have most of your stationary needs.

This store has lovely items...it is too bad that their customer service is appalling. I felt I was…read moretreated like Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman by both the workers and especially by the owner of the store. In addition, my quiet 11 year old daughter was initially not allowed in the store but realizing no one else was there, they "allowed" her in. After I made my over $100 purchase and we left, my daughter said, "those people working there weren't very nice, we're they Mom?" I'm mad at myself for making a purchase and now when I look at the poster, I can only think of how we were judged and treated.
