WEST PENN HARDWOODS

WEST PENN HARDWOODS

(2 reviews)

West Penn Hardwoods is one of my favorite places on earth. I have been here enough times that some…read moreof the staff even remember my name. Although the prices tend to fall on the high end of the range, the vast selection and excellent quality more than make up for it. So why one star?   I recently trekked the 2.5 hour drive from my home to West Penn with the express purpose of purchasing some Honduran rosewood burl. Most of the burl species at West Penn are separated into large crates that customers can dig through to find the piece they want. Like most turning wood, the pieces of burl are thickly coated in wax. Most burl pieces also lack any sort of label, which is fine because they're divided into species-specific crates. After finding a piece that fit the dimensions I was seeking, I picked up a few other pieces of turning stock and checked out. The burl alone cost $600, and in all I spent $1000 on this particular trip.   When I returned home and cut into the burl, I was very disappointed to see that what lay beneath the thick wax was not Honduran rosewood burl. It looked and smelled very similar to another species of wood with which I am familiar. Typically, if I happen to purchase a piece of wood and later find out it was misidentified, I just keep it and use it for something else. In no case of misidentified wood have I ever suspected intentional misrepresentation by the seller. There are hundreds of species of wood in the world, some of which looks very similar to others. Sometimes a specific species of wood can look remarkably different depending on the region from which the wood was harvested. When you're dealing with burl, it can be even more difficult to nail down the exact species. Additionally, there are thousands of pounds of loose burl in several crates, and it is very easy for a piece to get misplaced in the wrong crate, whether by a customer or an employee. Mistakes happen. That is totally understandable.   In this case, I did spend $600 and thus wanted to make the effort to get the right thing. I called West Penn and explained the situation. They asked for photos of the piece and said that the owner, Rocky Mehta, would have to make the final determination on how to proceed.   Almost two weeks later, I finally received a call from Mr. Mehta. I expected a quick and pleasant call given that I was a repeat customer and have never once had a complaint with West Penn. Instead, Mr. Mehta immediately launched into a very unprofessional rant about how I was accusing West Penn and him personally of misrepresentation. He admitted that he was unable to identify the exact species of what I purchased, but that it "definitely" came from South America and was admittedly not a good burl. Nonetheless, he challenged me to send it off to a lab to have it tested, as if I have the resources (and money, after spending $600) to do that. He seemed more outraged by the fact that I thought it was Burmese blackwood than he did at the fact that he couldn't even properly and exactly identify the species himself. The point, of course, is not that it was Burmese blackwood; the point is that it was not Honduran rosewood burl, which is what I wished to purchase.   I let Mr. Mehta know that I felt he was being extremely unprofessional, at which point he asked what course of action I expected him to take that was professional. I asked for either a partial refund or a replacement piece. I did, in fact, get a piece of wood from West Penn, and it was already cut into, so it couldn't be swapped. It was fair that I pay at least something for it, if not the full $600. He said he would think about it and get back to me. He never did. I tried following up with him several times until he finally had his daughter reply to me. They offered me a $100 credit to my account, adding insult on top of inexcusable behavior by the owner.   Unfortunately, I am now forced to sever all ties with West Penn Hardwoods. Mr. Mehta is unbelievably unprofessional. I have spent thousands of dollars at this establishment and would have certainly spent more, but this one experience has totally soured my overall experience.

The selection has been skimpy for the species that I typically buy (walnut, hard maple, white oak, ash). And I have learned the hard way that I need to significantly increase my waste allowance to allow for boards that are cracked, warped, have knotholes, and edges that are damaged. This wouldn't be so bad except that you have to pay full price for the wood even with these defects. Finally, the customer service seems to have dropped off in the past year or so, being less than friendly and generally unavailable.

Stopped there today after my 99th disappointment at a certain Big Box store where three indifferent employees had no idea what I was in need of and no real interest in helping me with my problem. The attitude at Cabinet World could not be more opposite... Knew immediately what I was looking for, actually had a good good supply, but helped me determine that the product I was seeking was not necessary for my particular application. Saved me money. Incredible customer service. True professionals. Highly, highly recommend!

He was going to the big box home improvement store to find a replacement when I suggested he should search out a locally owned cabinet professional. I found Cabinet World on Google maps. As soon as we walked in the door I knew we were in the right place. The cabinets and decor were impressive. The owner approached us right away. We explained that we needed to replace these cheaply made parts and she went above and beyond to try to help. She searched her back room for parts she thought would work. She looked up the contact information for the cabinet maker even though it wasn't a company that she had any relationship with. It was a busy day in her store and she didn't need to take the time to help when she had paying customers waiting. She was sincerely in it to help and she did. Although we didn't make a purchase that day, Cabinet World would certainly be my choice for cabinets in any remodel. It's clear to me that the store's philosophy is service above all. But on top of that, the displays pushed the limits of imagination. I saw samples of kitchens and bathrooms that made me want to rip my house to the plaster and start over. Kudos to a wonderful owner and an impressive business.
