The Zara in New Town Plaza is located on the third floor, aka the busiest floor as that's where the MTR station is. It's right opposite Gap, and both stores are normally equally crowded. It doesn't help that it's near the area of the mall that is linked to Phase 3 of the mall and Sha Tin Centre and Sha Tin Plaza, as this just makes it even more packed with people who are walking to or from those places. The Zara here, for some reason, is permanently crowded. On weekdays, it's crowded. On weekends, don't even think about coming. It's impossible to get a good look at clothes because there will always be someone in your way. The lines for the changing rooms stretch a mile long, making it hard for people like me who insist on trying anything on before buying to purchase anything. Not to mention that the air conditioning is really weak here! Recently, they rearranged the front section of the store so it's a lot more spacious than it used to be. Possibly the only redeeming factor about this Zara is that the kids' section all the way in always has a load of clothes on sale - think as low as $49 for a tee. Somehow, I find the clothes at this Zara quite a bit tackier than Zara normally is - if I went to the Zara at Central and made a list of all the stuff I liked, I probably wouldn't be able to find half of them here. I think it's because this mall is frequented often by mainlanders due to its proximity on the East Rail Line, so the selection of stuff, to be honest, is a little on the tacky side. I normally skip Zara when I'm at New Town Plaza. Even if I found something I liked, I wouldn't have the patience to stand in a line for half an hour for the changing rooms.

When you went in there, there was the distinct smell of cigarettes lingering in the air and seeping from the inside of the mall. The shops were either empty or operated by people who you really don't want to mess with and the deeper you went inside the less desirable it became. Turn the clock forward to the modern day, the place has cleaned itself up big time. There are no smokers, no fake CDs- instead there is now a supermarket, some old shops have carried through the regeneration including some shops selling mobile phones and watches which have been here forever. The mall's focus is now less centralized than before, you have a lot of shops focused on ladies fashion, a number of stores that sells mobile and electronics and a number of pharmacies. This turnaround is such a big one that I trust anyone who came here in the old days probably couldn't recognize it now . Good riddance to the old days when I just thought this place was waiting to be taken apart and this regeneration has really breathed a new lease of life into the margin of the Shatin City Centre complex. Would I come here all the way to see it? No. If you live nearby though, this is a pretty good place to kill time.

Instead, the shops here are more so small, family-owned businesses - a very refreshing chain from the other internationalized and chain-dominating malls of HK. Lucky Plaza is not big - you can circle it in a couple of minutes if you try. My favorite thing to do here is to explore the 'locker shops'. This is a concept where the shop consists of multiple squares, each divided from one another, and the sets of items in each are different. Rent in HK is expensive, and sometimes, a store owner may not have that much to sell. These locker stores allow them to rent out a locker or two monthly to sell their items while not having to be physically present in the store. As a result, a locker store is basically a ton of shops within a shop. It may be surprising what you can find here! My most recent purchase from Lucky Plaza was actually a drinking game from one of the locker shops here - I thought it would make a fun gift for a friend's birthday, and it was pretty inexpensive! K-pop merchandise is very popular here, including posters, folders and even playing cards, with each card featuring a different photo of a Korean celebrity! If you're interested in scrap booking or other crafts, you'll be able to find a lot of nice materials for that too. There are about three or four of these locker shops and they are usually the main reason for me coming to Lucky Plaza. The clothing stores at Lucky Plaza are not so remarkable though - a lot of brightly colored oversized t-shirts or outfits that are just way over the top. There are one or two accessories shops that are worth checking out though. As for food, your dining options are pretty limited. Tam Zai (Yunan-style noodles) is not bad, but I'm not a fan of the other restaurants here. It's best to venture back to New Town Plaza where there are a lot more restaurants to choose from!

Rococo is a neat local boutique selling casual female clothes and accessories. I first discovered…read moreit when I was walking around in phase three of New Town Plaza a couple of months ago. The interior of the store is a little dim, and the walls are kind of a dirty cream color, giving the store a vintage-y look. If you're a fan of bold prints and bright colors, Rococo is not for you. Rococo is the exact opposite of bold and bright - all their pieces are a very neutral color, if not just grey, and are quite subtle - think pale blue or cream colors. This color scheme is actually what drew me to the shop at the beginning! If you're the kind of person who likes clothes that are subtle but special, you'll like the style at Rococo. One thing I don't like about Rococo is that the sales ladies can be a little pushy. I remember once, I was looking at a top and one of the sales ladies started telling me about how this is a really popular choice and that many people have bought this within the last week. She also started making conversation with me, asking me where I was from and if I'm on school holiday. I could tell that she was just thing to get me to make the purchase! This was months ago back in winter. I actually haven't seen that sales lady again since, so maybe she's left, but her hard selling made me a little uncomfortable - I like to do my browsing at my own pace! Rococo is also a little on the pricey side so I've actually only bought two items from there so far. If you're a mother, you'll be glad to know that Rococo has a section up front with little girls' clothes that are matching to the adult ones. This means that if you see an item that you like and it's available in children's size, you can get both and twin with your daughter - how adorable would that be?!
