Gianni is the reason I keep coming back to AANUKO. A year and a half in and I'm not going anywhere. I have thick wavy hair and more cowlicks than one head should be allowed. I'd been getting the same high fade for a decade and wanted to try the longer wave thing everyone's doing. The first barber I asked for it butchered it, mostly because he'd never done a long cut in his life. Gianni took one look, diagnosed what was actually going on up there, and got me to a halfway cut. A couple months later, the cut grew in as he planned and he took me from 80 to 100%, right in time for my vow renewal. His profile calls him the brushback king and I couldn't agree more. Fair warning: he's meticulous, so plan on real time in the chair. You get what you pay for! Also book ahead. At least a month, in my experience. Gianni's popular and I've never once seen anyone get off the waitlist. The shop itself is worth the trip on its own. Great furniture, plants everywhere, and a back patio you can sit on if you're early or just want to hang. Vibes and the place is always clean. Their systems are top notch too. Plenty of notice before your appointment, everything organized, they offer you a drink when you sit down, and they use good products from the wash through the styling. The host is always so nice, everyone there is personable, and the music's great. One heads up: no parking lot. Street parking can be iffy if you catch a bad day, but there's usually at least one spot within a block. Go see Gianni! read more

I had a 4:00pm appointment, arrived on time, checked in, and waited until 4:10. No one told me my stylist was running behind, gave me an estimated wait, or acknowledged the delay. While I was sitting there waiting, my stylist actually came out, picked up a food delivery order, and walked back without acknowledging me or saying anything about the appointment. After 10 minutes with zero communication, I left. What really bothered me, and ultimately why I'm leaving this review, is what happened afterward. The host told me that my stylist had been ready to take me, but that I was no longer in the building. That was not true. I know because I was sitting there when she came out to get her food. She saw that I was still there and did not acknowledge me whatsoever. I completely understand that appointments run behind. That isn't the problem. A simple "She's running a few minutes late" would have resolved the entire situation. Instead, after I left, they attempted to charge me a cancellation fee and gave me an explanation that directly contradicted what I had personally witnessed. I drive nearly two hours for these appointments, so I make a point of arriving on time. Being expected to respect their cancellation policy while my appointment time wasn't respected is frustrating enough. Having the host then give me a false account of what happened made it significantly worse. The manager eventually contacted me and refunded the charge, which I appreciate. But I don't feel comfortable returning to a business after being treated this way. The delay was minor. The dishonesty afterward is what lost me as a customer. read more

UPDATE: I have never in my life changed a five-star review to one star. This is a first. Four weeks ago I wrote the review below calling this my forever salon. I found Aanuko because it's owned by Hanz de Fuko, whose products I use and love. My first cut with Grace was the best I'd had in ten years of searching this city. I booked my second appointment on the spot through their promotion and have been telling everyone I know to come here. Today, that second appointment. I got delayed at Kaiser pharmacy around the corner picking up medication and texted ahead that I was running behind. The salon replied "no worries" and asked for my ETA. Minutes later, they called and cancelled my appointment outright. No offer to shorten the service, no flexibility. A 30-minute men's cut, same stylist, returning client, sitting in my car outside their door. I understand schedules. What I don't understand is telling a customer "no worries" and then pulling the appointment while he's parked outside. If it couldn't be honored, say that in the text. Don't reassure someone and then cancel. Everything I wrote below about the space, the products, and Grace's skill is still true. That's what makes this so disappointing. They converted a customer for life in one visit and lost him just as fast - over ten minutes. read more

This is my third or fourth time here and I can honestly say that it's my favorite barber shop of all time. You are met with the options for complimentary drinks upon check-in. The setting is extremely comfortable and intimate as the staff are always welcoming and in a positive mood from start to finish. Nava is my day 1 and is consistent in his service and performance. They are all patient and transparent with their services and options. The prices for cuts are explicitly outlined in their website and you are able to book specific barbers. I had my haircut here for the first time with Alexsei and he truly captured what I was looking for! I have been to various places in L.A. and each time I came out disappointed not getting what I wanted despite showing reference photos. Alexsei recreated a haircut I had a handful of years ago that I got from someone who no longer cuts hair. He is very friendly and approachable. Nick was awesome. Extremely friendly from the moment I walked in, despite me getting lucky by sneaking into an after hours slot usually kept for regulars! He did not rush me at all when conversing about the nature of my hair, desires for the cut, styling preferences, etc., and successfully executed exactly what he verbalized. Add to that a great chat about music, relationships, work and pets, I left feeling fresh and light, despite it being dark out! I came here yesterday for a haircut with Dima. I arrived a few minutes early and he was ready on the dot; we had a brief discussion about what I wanted and ended up with exactly that. I'm not a hairstylist so I don't really know how to properly evaluate their technique and craft other than by how much I like the result, but Dima was very meticulous and focused with both the scissors on the top and the clippers on the sides. I also got some explanations on the different ways of how to get a fade, which was a first for me and gave me confidence that we're both on the same page. The front desk staff was nice and offered me a drink from their menu. There's only (mostly metered) street parking available, but I didn't have a hard time finding a spot on a Wednesday morning, however, I could see this potentially being an issue during busier times. Overall, great experience and I'm planning on getting my hair cut again by Dima. read more

Been cutting my hair with Brian for a long time high quality haircuts, precise attention to detail and the customer service is beyond compare! When sitting in the chair with Brian it's like you're talking to a lifelong friend it's more than just a haircut, he also started cutting my 2 year olds sons hair I was pretty hesitant at first because my son hadn't had the best experience with his first haircut but with Brian it was a totally different story he played with him got his trust and he gave him the haircut of his life! I booked an appointment with Nava and had such a wonderful and positive experience. I was quite nervous since my hair texture is very straight and fine, which I know can be challenging to work with. He was very reassuring and took in all the considerations and concerns I had. Went with a mid to low drop fade (it was my first time getting an actual fade, was very excited at the end result!), and a textured fringe. Prior to this, I had to style my hair with heat (curling) in order to achieve more volume and texture. Nava did such a great job giving my hair a lot of texture without taking off too much length. I was able to style my natural hair texture with more ease and confidence, which is something that I've been wanting for a long time. Love this super trendy spot! Make an appointment online to save time through their website! I always go to Ian and have been going to him since he started. Everyone is good in their own right though, so you can't go wrong with whoever you go to. Love the spot, love the service, and love the products they use. One critique is that parking is sometimes hard to find and they don't have their own lot, but it's LA so to be expected. There's metered parking, but it's not always available so expect to have to walk a little bit. read more

Fantastic place to get your hair cut. It was worth every penny for the women's hair cut I requested. Spent some time researching and did not disappoint. Aleksei was the one who cut my hair and he did an amazing job. I showed him some references and made a request to keep as much of my highlights as I could. I've had a couple fantastic experiences at AANUKO. Two visits with Danny G were enough that I no longer ask for a haircut - I sit down and let him do his thing. In between those visits I had an urgent need for a spot appointment and they paired me with someone while Danny wasn't available, and that person did a good job of continuing his plan for my hair. I've spent hundreds--if not thousands--of dollars at this barbershop over the years, consistently booking with the same barber and being a loyal customer. Unfortunately, one appointment ran about 30 minutes late because a work meeting went longer than expected. Instead of showing any flexibility for a long-time customer, I was told I couldn't book another appointment until I paid a $50 no-show/late fee. While I understand having a policy in place, I genuinely expected some consideration given the amount of business I've brought them over the years. There was none. I paid the fee, but after that interaction, I told them not to bother rescheduling because I would no longer be using their services. They chose to prioritize a one-time $50 charge over a loyal customer who had spent thousands with them and would have continued doing so. Policies are important, but so is customer loyalty. Very disappointing experience and a poor way to treat long-term clients. read more

I really want to give this place 1 more chance before deciding this place is not for me. I have had 3 different barbers here and didn't have the best experience. The place is great! the aesthetic definitely 1 of a kind, Never seen a barbershop as cool as this one, sadly, The barbers are the reason I'm leaving this review. 1st barber, the haircuts were good. I would come often but he no showed me twice and cancel another time but never attempted to remediate this. 2nd. it was a last minute haircut. he was new at the time. he was a nice guy. I didn't love the haircut so I knew I was not going to choose him again. today. I had a different barber who couldn't follow instructions. I asked for a fade on the sides and gave me a disconnect "Fade" it feels like my hair starts higher on my head that it should be. He also brushed my hair back and cut it from the back, I have a faux hawk hairstyle and it goes forward. never had a barber brush my hair to the back and cut it like that. After today. It is safe to say I'm not coming back. Not really worth the $80+ hair cut. read more

Grace left my hair amazing, it was exactly how I wanted it and not too short. I usually struggle finding a barber who can cut my hair length, but Grace knew how to cut it without going to a default super short.
