The church is beautiful and the youth controlled the program and all went well. Their choir was great and their pastor was welcoming and inviting. Our pastor delivered a masterful message. After service we went downstairs for dinner and was reminded of the historical impact concerning the bombing and loss of the four little girls. There was a lot of history in that room. A tragic story that also sparked resistance and resilience…read more The KKK planted a bomb at this beautiful house of God and 4 little girls were killed and 1 little girl survived (Sarah Collins Rudolph) but received lifelong injuries. All that to say, this place is special. It was an honor to tour it and learn more about the historical stories. They remodeled but preserved the parts they could to show the history that took place there. You can still see the black charred wall on the side where the bombing took place. A memorial is now set up across the street at a park to commemorate the 4 little girls who passed away in the bombing. One of the saddest takeaways is that the little girl who survived the bombing, Sarah Collins Rudolph, is still paying for her own medical bills (she lost an eye and had shrapnel all over her body). Her attackers never received the justice they deserved (one was later jailed but after he enjoyed most of his life and was an older man). The government still has not given her any financial support to this day (Just like the Sept 11th victims received monetary payment, she was wanting the same reparations but she never received any)!!! The appeals to the governor have come to deaf ears and blind eyes. It's very sad.

I grew up there because it was a compromise between my Catholic mother and Presbyterian father. Worked out well for me. If you are a lawyer who practices downtown, you should probably become a member - for some reason, ex-lawyers seem to be half of the Episcopal priesthood. But it makes them good speakers, which makes sermons worthwhile. The Church has been very good to my family, when my kids were born, when my mother died, and now that my father is homebound. They are a good group of folks, and I really appreciate them. The Church is also associated with the Advent Episcopal School for 4K-8th grade, which is where my kids go. See that separate review, but it's a great school.

The collection of Saint relics here is phenomenal. It is well displayed for all to venerate. The stained glass, the sculptures, and the altar all glorify God in the highest way. Fr. Jerabek and Fr. Adams are serious about celebrating the the Sacrifice of the Mass in a reverent way. The attached Cathedral Life Center is vibrant with activity. Follow their active FB page for updates on events. The Cathedral is currently hosting Catholic Kids Week - essentially a weeklong summer program for kids. The courtyard contains a fountain with koi and goldfish and also houses space for a playground. The grounds are very well kept. The Catholic community is very much alive in Birmingham. All have been so lovely and welcoming. They really epitomize the saying, "A stranger is just a friend you have not met yet..."

The employees at the front desk couldn't have been nicer. They put my group and I on 7-day trials and made us feel welcomed. We played a lot of pickle ball and they were always friendly and helpful. The gym area has a lot of equipment and was always clean. Looking forward to going back next time I'm in town.

We called one couple Dad & Sue, we loved their children too. So to say go back to pickin cotton, there are machines that do that now. I love my childhood memories and black friends.​
