If you are a lawyer who practices downtown, you should probably become a member - for some reason, ex-lawyers seem to be half of the Episcopal priesthood. But it makes them good speakers, which makes sermons worthwhile. The Church has been very good to my family, when my kids were born, when my mother died, and now that my father is homebound. They are a good group of folks, and I really appreciate them. The Church is also associated with the Advent Episcopal School for 4K-8th grade, which is where my kids go. It is very large and takes up an entire city block. I loved this church.. History I found out about it on the internet: he Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama, is the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. On March 30, 1983, the structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Episcopal Church of the Advent The parish church of the Advent was established in 1872, one year after the founding of the city of Birmingham, and was one of the first churches built in the new city. The first building on this site was completed in 1873, but was soon destroyed by fire. The current structure, was occupied in 1883 with the tower and portico undergoing construction until 1885. The Cathedral is known for its historical location on Twentieth Street near Linn Park, as well as for the reputation of its music program. It was not until 1982, that the Church of the Advent became a cathedral, when the Diocese of Alabama selected the church as its seat The congregation undertook a major project to preserve the sandstone exterior of the Cathedral between 1999 and 2005. During this same period the Rector's Garden was redesigned to improve drainage and accommodate a columbarium and the belltower was refitted for a carillon of fifteen bells, cast by Fonderie Paccard of Lac d'Annecy, France. Service times are Sundays 8:15(traditional service), 9:30 & 11am. They have childcare if needed. The staff and volunteers are AMAZING! Very welcoming, ready to answer any of your questions, and ever filled with the Spirit. The entire church is beautiful and welcoming. The sanctuary is so peaceful and seating is very comfortable. They have a cafe area with yummy snacks and the coffee is very good. They are very internationally mission minded and locally. It is very refreshing to be a part of a body who cares for members and recognizes them and their gifts. The congregation is so diversified. It is a lovely mix. Pastor Paul is a wonderful preacher. He is also very personable. Our first visit he recognized us and sat with us and wanted to know about us as a couple. It was so refreshing to see how he really cares for his congregation. Every service was closed by singing the Old Irish Blessing (May the Road Rise to Meet You), which was one of the most touching moments of the service. They also have "the discipline of silence" a moment of absolute quiet during the service to collect, reflect and pray. My husband and I jokingly call this an Episcopal-style Baptist church: they follow the lectionary, wear traditional robes and think. The old pastor, Jim Evans, used to write a column for the Birmingham Post Herald (before it went under and he went to Auburn) and has since been replaced since we moved away from the area.

But they do a good job of making you feel welcome and making it feel like a small church. The best way to get to know people is by joining a small group. There are a ton from which to choose. Most are organized by age group but there is more than one per age group so if you pick one that you don't love there are others to choose from. You are encouraged to try several to find one that is a good fit. There are three services from which to choose, 8, 9:30, and 11. Pastor Buddy is the lead pastor and he really is the kindest, most caring man. Every week he tells us he loves us and I believe him. He's a good speaker and he makes it easy to pay attention to him. The building itself is really nice and well cared for. The children's area is adorable and looks like something out of Disney World. There's kids church for grades 4 to 6 which is a nice option for preteens. And there's a whole separate building for the teenagers. There are lots of options for Wednesday nights for the whole family including dinner for a small fee for those that want to eat at the church. Plenty of parking, including shuttles to take you right to the building if you have to park further than you care to walk. But there is a parking area near the church for guests and there are staff members waiting who will help get you and your kids situated. I hope if you are reading this, you will give Hunter Street a try. You just might find it's the right church for you!

Christian, large ACTIVE well run youth program, bible study at the church, option for small groups. We found everything we asked for right here. Like pastor Buddy said, "Please find a church home. If Hunter Street isn't for you please find somewhere else, but find somewhere." What a great place. Lets start with youth and move up. Birth -5th grade A really cool innovative check-in/out system on the computer to safe guard your little ones as they move through the "Bug's Life" looking tunnels(hallways) to the age specific class room. 6th-12th Once your child gets to 6th grade they move across the parking lot to the youth building. Rock climbing wall, pools tables, ping pong, fusball, and basketball. 2 different areas for highschool and middle school. And a juice bar. Adults 2 stories of class room for bible study Book store/coffee shop Lots of coffee selections and a very large amount of books for purchase. A massive sanctuary and a cozy chapel.
