First off, unlike a few years ago, the staffs here now are extraordinarily friendly and welcoming upon your entrance to the store. Unfortunately, that's pretty much where the "good" ends. The (new) owner(s) don't seem to me to be very astute business people. There are vast areas of shelving and refrigerators that are completely void of any stock, and have been so for probably more than are year. This gives the store a bleak, unkempt sort of look. From a purely business perspective, this doesn't make a lot of sense. You can't make a lot of profit when you have little to sell. It also gives the store a rather shabby and uninviting look. Their prices are a bit higher than most convenience stores generally, and I did come across a few items that were insanely overpriced, but overall, their pricing is fairly tolerable if you are only buying a hand full of items. The dingy lighting does them no favor either. A casual passerby might easily get the impression that the store is either closed or out of business. The recently installed pseudo-Starbucks type of coffee service area, isn't very inviting either. It does seem to me to be run by or as a separate business from the store itself (the "store" staff didn't seem to be involved with it and another gentleman appeared to me to "be in charge" of it). It's not attractive looking, and I have to say I'm certainly not inclined to buy coffee from it. There is a noticeable lack of snacks foods, e.g., they have absolutely no Hostess products whatsoever (when Hostess was still around!) a few other brands of snacks. Their beverage selection is the most minimal I've ever seen, and they certainly have tons of space to expand on it. Their freezer items are again extremely minimal, again with tons of room to add some additional products. Even though it really isn't, the look of the store gives the impression that it is not all that clean. Mostly that's because the flooring really could stand replacing, and the ceiling is old and bit dirty looking. If you look close enough, it's really not unclean at all, it jsut appears that way with a pssing glance. If they painted the walls and spruced up the flooring, I think that would brighten the place up significantly. About the only use I have for it is to grab a drink when I get my lunch across the street at the Tiki Inn Chinese Take-out. It is cheaper here than the restaurant, and of course, you don't have to pay any meal tax on it. In short, if you need to buy a few household staples, be it milk or flour or the like, you'll probably spend more here than most other similar stores. And there are better options not all that far away.

It reminds me of Roche Bros Markets but with more of a family vibe. Every meat and chicken in that location was very fresh and easily marked and package but was in sticker shock of prices per pound. But you have to accept your not in an area of much competition or busy city customers. Mostly here I noticed a more upper class clientele and so prices reflect those who can afford it for convenience and location. I am sure that this place is a very busy location and it's evident that they catered to the best money can buy for their customers. I do lots of comparison shopping and mystery shopping to know where I get the biggest bang for my dollar. Nice location great historical area and for me nice to visit!

In my mind, the only reason to go to Mr. Grocer is if you need lottery tickets, pre-packaged latin chips/snack foods, or pre-packaged latin baked goods. (At least I think that's what they are.) The store is very small, quite cluttered, and on the occassion I've visited, rather dirty. While there is an interesting selection of latin produce, the bananas I bought were very odd - tiny (and yes, they were bananas) and though greenish on the outside they were brown and bruised on the inside. They do not carry beer, not that I care. If you are in a bind and need milk you might find it here - but mainly Mr. Grocer seems to supply lottery tickets and junk food to the Waltham masses.

Getting in and out of that thing sometimes feels like a low-budget demolition derby. That said, once you survive the parking lot, the store itself is pretty damn good. The deals are legit, the meat is fresh, the produce is fresh, and there's a huge variety without feeling like you have to sell a kidney to afford your groceries. Honestly, probably some of the best prices in the state for the quality of the product you're getting. The store is clean, even when it's crowded, and the staff has always been friendly and actually willing to help when you need something. Checkout is usually pretty quick, too, which is saying something for a grocery store. Four stars, and honestly, the only reason it isn't five is because whoever designed that parking lot clearly had a personal grudge against humanity.
