Summerfield Zoo is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to zoos. It's located amid a vast stretch of…read morecropland, and its location/entry point aren't indictive of an attraction. To be frank, it looks like you're going to someone's farmhouse. There is very little parking, so you know the place doesn't cater to many people at any given time. The animal enclosures border on basic - no frills here. Underneath all of these quirks is a well-run small zoo. There are enough animals to amuse most young kids and a sizable percentage of parents/adults. Some of these animals are par for the course (goats, camels) but others are zoo elites (hyenas, wolves). I's a great place to spend an hour or so, followed by a ten minute trip to Belvidere for lunch or snacks. I think the most important aspect is that despite some of the negative comments posted in the past, the animals are all heathy and in great shape. Perhaps I ought to defer to all of the animal behaviorists and psychologists who have shared their prognoses on Yelp - there are quite a lot of them it seems - but I do not believe the animals here are "depressed" at all. There is quite a lot of anthropomorphizing going on and it's unfair to the proprietors of this facility. All this place needs is some jazzing up of their facility, if only at the entrance, to offer some "character', as it is pretty devoid of that at the moment. Hopefully with some more funding that will happen down the road. Most importantly, it's a fun place to visit some healthy animals and that's really all that matters.

The animals are very cute, it's been a while since I've been and I'm not quite sure what they have…read morethere anymore

Expensive? Yep. Worth every penny? ABSOLUTELY!…read more Just be prepared for some animal snot on your vehicle and maybe a scratch or two because these animals are NOT concerned about your paint job! We did the route THREE times and spent over 3 hours there, so we definitely got our money's worth. Splitting our bowls of food into 4 portions was a smart move because one hungry animal decided to help himself to one of our bowls! There was so much laughter, a little fear, and A LOT of fun! I'm pretty sure the kids AND us adults will be talking about this place for years to come. We all had a blast, and honestly, seeing everyone laughing, screaming, and having so much fun made it worth every penny. If you're looking for a fun and memorable family adventure, Safari Lake Geneva is definitely worth it!

But I don't mind paying that because I do see the improvements as I go every year. They have a drive-thru which uses your own car to feed the animals and they also have kind of like a petting zoo as well as giraffe experience where you can feed the giraffe and the capybara experience. I was able to do the giraffe experience which is so much fun. Hopefully I'll be able to do thecapybara next time. Still going to be a yearly thing for me I would go back every time.

Fast forward to…read morebringing a three-year-old this month and it was the same lovely experience with even more fun activities. My kiddo and her friends were in awe of the animals, most were out and about. The encloses are large and you're able to get (safely) close to the animals for fantastic views. It's hard to believe the zoo is free, so definitely worth it to spend a tiny bit more to go on the little train and carousel with whoever you're going with for thr cause! Lots of shaded benches for taking a break and really detailed information at each enclosure about not just that type of animal in general, but the ones loving there. There are plenty of areas for photo opps. Very up-to-date bathrooms with a ton of stalls/sinks to keep the lines little to none. If you've got kids and need a second for them to get the wiggles out in a fenced area, there is a giant 3-story jungle gym to enjoy. Not huge but reasonable amount of parking. We'll keep coming back, such am amazing day!

The park land was gifted in 1904 by Sen. William Vilas, naming the park for his son. One of the conditions of the grant was to maintain public access to the park without admission charges. The zoo opened in 1911, with the City of Madison getting ownership in 1937. In 1983, the ownership was gradually handed over to Dane County. There was a non-profit fund raising arm for the zoo (Henry Vilas Zoological Society), but that relationship ceased in 2019 with a dispute with no distinct replacement. Thus, operational costs are borne by the county government for now (with a small endowment). An important ongoing goal is to maintain accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) for operational excellence. It was a hot weekday, so the zoo was pretty empty (of both visitors and animals), and none of the snack/food areas were open. The American Flamingo exhibit was a colorful stop, and the Aviary building was a good place to observe parrots and bats, along with aquariums.
