Not sure how this place is in business after how I was treated/talked to. I'm not from there but was looking to get a cake made because I was heading down there for an event. I messaged them on Facebook and sent a few pics of some ideas for a cake. A few days went by and I never heard anything (which is highly unusual for any business on fb), so then I had to wait a few days to call because of their hours. When I called I said "Oh hi! I messaged you a few days ago on f and I hadn't heard back yet, I'm looking to get a cake done, so I thought I'd call you!" And first thing she says is "I don't respond to fb messages". ( and she didn't say it nicely, the time in which she was speaking to me the whole Time was unacceptable)I'm like oh okay. She then asks what I want and I say well how am I supposed to show you when you don't answer your messages, the photos are in there. And she says "well I guess you can email them to me"so anyways, after a not so friendly first encounter, I email her. She replies back sayIng that first of all, they don't do cakes that size and that that information is on their website. And she says " The gold lettering on the first cake isn't actually edible it looks like a plastic and metal signs. And the flowers are silk" she basically just shot it all down and talks down to me as if I know nothing, and then goes on about price. So I was a little taken back because that's how ALL custom cakes start, you have an idea and the baker is creative and snowballs off of that. So I replied saying "well yah, I'm not stupid, I know that those are plastic, I wasn't expecting an exact replica"assuming she'd make gum paste flowers, and paint the numbers on or whatever you know. There's tons of options. So then I say to her "First you tell me you don't respond to Facebook messages(you are the only business I've ever come across that doesn't, what's the point of even being on there) , and to go to your website, your website has ZERO photos and says go to Fb, see the stupid cycle here? You make people come to your fb just for photos and then come to your website for something else, and will only respond by phone". So from the very getgo I felt like she wanted nothing to do with me. And then part of her reply was "old on here I think you're overreacting and didn't understand my meaning to any of my information. I'm sorry you have had a hard time with this" then a bunch of yadda yadda and "Again, you are being very sensitive and there isn't a need for it. I don't think you are an idiot?? You insinuated that yourself. I'm just giving you info. I hope you can understand this and not be so upset. " and THEN immediately send another email saying only this "And Brittany I think it really unfortunate you had to insult me when you got confused by everything. Telling me I'm not skilled enough is a personal attack and I think that a shame you felt the need to be cruel in your misunderstandings of our conversation. Be a little more gentle in life. ". And THEN proceeds to block me from her FB page to prevent me from leaving a review. I sent her a final email (the photos attached), to which she didn't reply. If you made it this far(hahaha), the moral of the story is that, she's SUPER unprofessional, you don't talk to customers like that, even IF she did think I was being difficult, which I really wasnt. Customer service has really gone out of the window for most places nowadays unfortunately.

    Red's Bakery - Nanaimo Bar

The best Nanaimo Bar we ever had. It was delicious and to die for!…read moreMy sister bought some extra take back home (Toronoto). They are still delish after couple of days.

I heard from multiple sources that Red's Bakery serves the most mediocre Nanaimo Bars in Nanaimo,…read morebut since we were in the area (and a couple of other places were closed the day we were in town), we decided to walk on over. Red's has a kind of small town bakery feel, with old-fashioned almost eclectic decor, perhaps 60s/70s retro. Unlike some of the other bakeries, they prepackage some of their desserts in plastic, so it's difficult to tell how fresh they are. I suppose Nanaimo Bars keep well in the first place. We ended up trying Nanaimo bars from three different places, with my notes for Red's as below: Nanaimo Bar ($6) - This Nanaimo bar is much taller than the other two, probably around 50% taller than bar 3 and a full double of bar 2. It cuts very smoothly without much flaking off. The crumb base underneath is smooth, indicating that the coconut fibers are well blended to reduce strand length. It's almost like an Oreo base, with heavy Dutch processed cocoa flavor. There should be nuts mixed in, but they are crushed so finely that I can't really tell what nut is used. People on social media complain about the bottom layer, but I actually love it. For the other layers, the top icing is really sweet. It has a heavily roasted chocolate flavor and by far the darkest in color. The middle layer just tastes like standard icing. It's sweet but I think less so than the other bars. (4/5) Interestingly enough, I enjoyed the Nanaimo Bar from Red's more than both other bakeries. I think it's pretty good in quality and while sweet, has the heavy cocoa elements of the cookie base to help balance things out a bit. Washroom - I didn't see any available for customers.
