I've only been to A&W once since moving to Mt. Airy, but so far I have no complaints. The reviews I read ahead of time all seem to be accurate. They were very pleasant over the phone and took my information down which gave me confidence they'd be prepared for whatever work load they had. My old mechanic was great, but he was very casual about scheduling and I'd always drop off my car with like 3 or 4 other people all showing up at the same time. He'd often chat about how he had so much work to do and so little time. Here I feel like they're organized and staffed well enough to avoid that. They even told me it was good that I didn't mind waiting until Tuesday, because they were already booked up for Monday. I appreciate that honesty and I'm glad they didn't just try to cram me in when they didn't really have the time. It was just an oil change, but so far so good. They even replaced my headlight which I regret not telling them I already had a bulb for in the glove box, but oh well that's just my own fault for not expecting them to go above and beyond to keep me street legal. It was good knowing they wouldn't over look something like that. read more

If you live in Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, or surrounding neighborhoods (heck, even if you have to drive here from points further) this is the one auto shop you need, hands down! First of all, they do ONLY the work that's needed and don't add on unnecessary labor! They explain all the work they do, and even show you the part that was removed and why it was done. Simply put, you can trust A & W Auto! And these days, that's worth it right there. So get there early (I've dropped off my car 6:30 am) and be ready to pick up your car by 4:30 cause they like to finish early. This is my 200th review! :-) -- All around great mechanic, Thank you Yelp! I am the reason mechanics rip off women. I know nothing about cars and often fail to do even basic maintenance. Being from Cali, I didn't have a mechanic in Philly when the car started smoking among other things. I sort of gave up on it for years and recently decided to get it operable again. I called around and other shops were just plain rude. These guys were the opposite--completely nice and cordial. Andrew took my car in before business hours and let me pick it up after hours. He even gave me a ride to the taxi station. He didn't want to charge me until he knew he could help with the problem and even though he said he was booked until Friday, my work was completed same day. The price was in line with industry standards according to Google, but I don't feel I was charged for work I didn't truly need. Check these guys out. Also, as a black woman I am always saddened by how few black owned businesses there are. It feels good to support the community. read more

Quick, friendly! Went there for my state inspection and Andy took care of my car fast. He even came out to my house the following week to check up on my fiancee's car that was not starting. I decided to go to A & W because a previous review stated that they never rip off people who know nothing about cars, which turned out to be right! I got a flat because of Pennsylvania's inability to fill potholes ever. Went in early on a Tuesday and Andrew, a super nice guy, called around to find me the cheapest replacement - took a total of 15 minutes, max. Came back the next day to have it put on the car, which he took care of while I was standing there in five minutes! It was the easiest experience I've ever had in an auto shop. Considering that the last time I got a flat I went to Walmart Tire & Lube and waited three hours to pay more than I paid at A & W, I know where I'll be going the inevitable next time Pennsylvania destroys my car. Dealing with auto repairs is one of my absolute top things that I hate to do. When you lack mechanical knowledge most shops/dealerships try to take advantage. Mr. Andrew made it painless. I stopped in one Friday morning in terrible weather conditions after receiving both check gauges and check engine warnings. The location was convenient and the Yelp reviews from other women intrigued me. Despite the amount of vehicles that the staff was working on at the time, Mr. Andrew made time to make sure that I was safe to drive through the weekend until he had time to give my issue his full attention. We worked together to diagnose the issue over a few days. At every interaction he made it a point to educate me. He showed me what he was doing and repeatedly made sure that I understood. During and after the servicing of my vehicle he showed me the parts that he changed out and why. The labor charges are reasonable. I found a reliable painless service in A & W. read more

A good and honest mechanic is hard to come by, especially in Philadelphia. Andrew and Willie are the old school friendly and attentive mechanics that you just don't find anymore. You're not going to find a plush waiting room with great magazines and a flat screen TV or espresso machine but you will find friendly, courteous, and polite guys that will explain what is wrong and provide options. I'm in the process of selling a car that is an absolute lemon and I have been to A&W on several occasions unfortunately and no matter what part of the city I may reside, I will always bring my cars to them for now on. Super friendly! I decided to get my car inspected here based off of reviews from fellow yelpers. I was pleased with the service. They were very friendly, quick (it took about 2.5hrs to get my car inspected and I dropped it off right after calling them, no appointment), and affordable ($71 approx for a full inspection). They take credit and debit cards, just no AMEX. I will definitely go back to get my car inspected here next year. It is a small garage with a waiting room on the 2nd floor. Snacks (to buy - cheap 50 cents), bathrooms, AC, a couch n chairs, bulletin board with local business cards, and a TV on the news channel. Cozy, not fancy by any means, but does the trick! I recommend walking around the neighborhood while you're waiting. The library is a few blocks away. read more

It's rare to feel happy when you're spending $800 on work for your car, but I've had the experience at A&W. This shop truly lives up to its Yelp reputation. Andy and Willie are two of the nicest guys I've met, and they are honest and great mechanics to boot! These guys have done a lot of work on our 1998 Civic, and they've regularly discounted costs to help us out. When our catalytic converter started to go, they did everything they could to prevent us from having to replace it, and worked on the car for free a second time when their original plan didn't work out. I love supporting local businesses, but it's an added bonus when I know that the money I'm spending is on quality work and that my money is supporting members of my community that are genuinely good people. I'm new to PA and this whole "inspection/tags" thing. After reading lots of positive reviews about A&W I gave them a call to see what they charged and set up an appointment. The man who answered the phone was great - informative and friendly. I took my car over the next day, with my CA plates still attached. A disreputable shop would have seen my CA plates, and my confused answers to their questions (how should I know if I am required to get an emissions tag?) and totally could have taken advantage of the situation. Instead, these guys looked into whether or not an emissions inspection was required (the car is registered in centre county - long story), got the job done, and had my car back to me later that afternoon at the exact price they quoted. They even replaced a tail light bulb that I'm pretty sure they didn't charge me for. Fast, friendly, and cheap - what's not to like? read more

Brought my car back for inspection and Andy told me I could pass, but recommended a few repairs. He said repeatedly I didn't need the work to pass, and wanted to be sure I uderstood. These guys seem to be good, honest mechanics. When I've gone in for repairs (such as new belts, water pump, wheels), they always took the time to show me exactly what was wrong, and what needed to be done. In my experience, the prices are in line with the best around - and for repairs, significantly less than chains like Midas. It's also a great place to go for state inspection. This place is awesome! As a female who is admittedly completely lost when it comes to anything mechanical, I tend to get taken advantage of when a mechanic things that I will fall for anything. So I went in for an inspection (at another place) and they basically told me that I needed my entire car fixed and quoted a crazy sum. Yeah, I wasn't buying it. I found A&W and got another inspection, an honest one and they provided quick, honest and great service. I'm an out of towner that needed a water pump installed. I had the part in hand but was not expecting the repair to be done today or tomorrow. Had a number of codes which was causing a check engine light on my car. They were very organized and detailed in handling my problems. They constantly updated me on my repair circumstances. The people were friendly, polite and completly honest. Excellent repair business. No games. The price was higher than I expected, but I wanted everything repaired. I would say that they should find online parts facilities to lower the prices and include other non-OEM online suppliers. The quality of after-market manufacturers are often higher than auto company parts supplies. read more

One of the best shops I have ever been to. The guys at A &W did my state inspection and emissions test, and the first time my car flunked both. They made sure to show me everything that was wrong, and they did my brakes and a tie rod for me for a great price, and they did a bunch of little things for free to get my car to pass. The car didn't pass emissions because it needed to go through a drive cycle, and they told me this straight up. They re-tested it at least 5 times this past week until it finally passed, and charged me nothing past the first try.
