In the past I had never seen it in their display but came on the of chance, I asked the server if there was any, and I was in luck there was a stock pile in the fridge. Not sure why a butchers shop would stock an item then not place it on display, very odd indeed. There is a good selection here, from steak pie's to eggs, definitely a place to visit.

From having a 5 min healthy discussion on preferences of wing-tip sirloin and ribs of beef I was given a sneeky peep round the back. These guys provide the beef for the best steak places in Glasgow. I'd eaten at one of them earlier in the week and my eyes were bulging at the trays of chateaubriands and rib in sirloins. So, as you'd expect, their meat is very well sourced and as good as you're going to get anywhere. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing. Week after I wanted a lamb rump as I had the hunger for some dauphinoise. They were happy just to prep some up straight away, no fuss. The lamb was delicious........as was the dauph ;) ........and the sausages. Get the Italian fennel ones and slow cook cook them in your tomato sauce for pasta. Very, very impressive. Prices are as you'd expect for meat of this quality. Look on the window for weekly £10 deals. Steak and chicken. Well worth it.

And if that doesn't make you want to go as well, you're either a vegetarian, or just plain ole crazy (yes, those are different). Nice decor, welcoming, with a good layout and professional staff. It is a working farm and registered Farm Assured so you can be sure that the meat has few food miles and is Scottish. The shop is busy with many people returning for their regular orders. They have now started offering a butcher service for local hotels in the area. They have a good range of products and some are award winning. I would reccomend their steak pies and I've heard good reports about their sausages and black puddings. They also offer breakfast packs with flat (lorne) sausage, beef and pork sausagess, breakfast sausage, fruit pudding and haggis. They have started selling packs of meat for catering for large numbers. There's also a nice deli section with a good variety of Scottish cheeses, including some made in Ayrshire, pate and sauces, dips, chutney and jams. They will also make up a hampers for you for a special occasion. There's plenty of car parking and it is well signed. The staff are friendly and they have their own butchers who will cut meat to your liking and advise you the best way to cook it. It is well worth making a visit for something a bit different and special.

I buy my Stornaway black pudding here all the time when I'm passing through, at the side there is a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, potatoes and fresh eggs. You can order any items that they don't usually stock like turkey's for Christmas & venison. Definitely a place to stop by for all your fresh meats.

Butcher: "Oh sorry, someone else has already ordered lamb shanks." Me: "OK....do you only have one lamb??" Next call Thomson Brothers; Me: "Hi, could I order some lamb shanks please?" Butcher: "No problem, sir. How many? For Friday? See you then." On the day, a cheery welcome, some good banter and some superb shanks, all wrapped and ready to go. In terms of quality & size, more like lion shanks than lamb. This Tesco here has a very good size and a great selection of meat, fruit and veggies. We always enjoy shopping groceries on vacation and Tesco was always fun for us. There is also a nice selection of nice sandwiches for any budget. And our beloved Krispy Kreme Donuts are also available here :) I very much enjoyed the aged Scottish Steaks on sale here. Juicy and tender meat. Good priced too. If you need any cash, ATM's are just outside and so is the Tesco Gas Station with great prices on gas. It's always fun at Tescos. This one's very good - not the very best, but still a great place to shop.

We were amazed at the classy restaurant found inside! Actually we only stopped off there (on 21st Oct 2008) for coffee and we were very scruffy having been walking the hills in the rain. (This was the only 'cafe' we could find in the town still open at the end of the afternoon) Still, it made no difference to the bar man/waiter who, although young, had so much old-world charm and good manners. (Oh, how I wish everyone in restaurants and cafes were like him!) He was very welcoming and friendly and didn't mind a bit that we only wanted two coffees. They were served with a piece of Scottish butter tablet on the side. Do look at the Chu Chus website - it's really lovely - very professional and interesting with some great photos (far better than mine)! Quite an expensive place for meals, I would say, but definitely a nice and very different place to go for a special occasion.
