We've been highly satisfied customers of A Plus Tax Services for over 20 years. Two years ago, the owner sold her business to the current owner. This year, when making an appointment, we were assured that the owner, a CPA, would personally do our taxes. However, when we arrived, we were handed off to an underling to fill in our forms. The owner only came in at the end to review the forms. Also, when he came in, we requested for him to put on a mask so that we'd be totally safe from getting Covid (we were wearing masks). He argued and eventually did not put on a mask. What happened to the customer is always right? We'll be looking for a new tax preparer. read more

I first reached out for her help many years ago when I received a letter from the IRS telling me that I owed money on a tax return from 2 years prior. This was when I was doing my own taxes and Patti pointed out the mistake I made. She filed the amended tax forms and it ended up that instead of owing nearly $2K, I received back and additional $400. Do NOT come here. My family has been coming here for years to see Patti and this year their prices went up by a TON -- around 2x more than last year. I was shocked to hear the price at the end of my appointment today and they simply said it was due to the new ownership. I wish they were upfront about the change in prices, especially for returning customers because we felt blindsided. The new owner is scamming people with these absolutely ridiculous prices. There is no reason for the prices to increase by more than double for the same exact services. Definitely NOT worth it. This will be the last year that we're going to A Plus Tax Service now that they're under the unethical ownership of Nexxus/Kaiden Degas. I've been going here for the last several years and was happy with the high level of customer service and pricing. Unfortunately, business was sold to another party. Service is still good, but pricing is ridiculously higher (over 2x-3x the cost compared to prior years). I wished they would have and/or could have been up front with me about this when I made my appointment. Maybe it's my fault to assume pricing will be in the same ball park as last year. As a repeating customer, asking about pricing never crossed my mind. Sad to say, but this will be my last visit to A Plus Tax Service. I strongly DO NOT recommend this place. It literally took 30 min and I was charged 450.00 ( she took off 100.00 when she saw how unhappy I was so 350.00) I'm a single woman with one job. Nothing complicated. I went ahead, and it was a meeting that I definitely don't regret. Brenda was FANTASTIC. She actually asked me questions relevant to my tax refund, itemizing each category in order for me to get a maximum return. She explained each step accordingly so that I understood the process, especially since I am a new home owner (long form is a little more complex & pricier - fyi). Went to see Patti again yesterday. She won yet another award for best tax service for 2011. This doesn't surprise me at all, because she is by far the best tax person I have ever used. Patti doesn't just enter your numbers into the computer like a robot, she actively looks for ways to save you money. It is an interactive tax experience, you give her your data, she will ask you questions, and then she will use that information to get you the biggest return possible. Every year I always forget a thing or two, but Patti never lets me forget. She looks at my forms from last year, and makes sure I use whatever deductions are due to me. My friend used to use an online tax service, but I talked her into using Patti. My friend was so happy, that I am getting a free dinner out of the larger return that she is getting back. A computer can only do so much when doing your taxes. Having someone in front of you who can ask you questions, and knows how to apply that data to maximize your return, is the best way to make sure that you receive the maximum that is due to you. Besides, a computer cannot tell what to do, to help save you money in the future. read more

I called to make an appt, communicated with Theresa (I believe she's the receptionist) and everything went downhill from there. She asked me questions to get a quote, which was fine- but as conversation went on, communication became progressively difficult. She asked how many stocks I sold - between 1-12 ( above that would be a different pricing tier)?I asked what she meant by that- how many units or frequency? She just kept saying "how many stocks". As she put me on hold I thought about it and believe meant # of company stocks. She never confirmed, but I assumed otherwise the price will be very expensive. Another question I asked was,"If I had just one question after my tax appt, would Patty be open to answer it? Theresa said any questions I have would require a consultation (fee). I replied, " even if it's just one question to a CPA I plan to hire as lifelong partner? Theresa's response was, "you can ask her that during your appt with her." I mentioned I need to know these answers upfront before deciding whether or not I'm interested in moving forward - and Theresa just kept saying may times that she doesn't know and never offered to perhaps someone there to find out, despite me asking her (as I'm ok with her getting back to me). Theresa also mentioned that Patty doesn't give out her email address and to speak with her, I'll need to schedule a consultation (w/fee). For me, that's a very inflexible business model, especially for taxes and also very scary - say if something happens to my taxes and I have questions about remedy; knowing this red tape process exists is a huge issue? I have always done my taxes since I was a teenager. Now that I've been married 10 years, I still have done my own taxes with ease and confidence. This year I encountered a lot of complicated scenarios (including starting my own small business) which is why I chose to Yelp for a tax service/accountant. Patti got great reviews so I decided to try her even though she wasn't my first choice. She just happened to be the only one who had room during tax season to take on a new client. That should have been my first clue.... Walking into someones home where there's a locked iron screen door, a dog barking, an old woman eating cake in a kitchen, and a make shift desk set up in the foyer should have been my second clue..... My husband and I went and they did not at all set expectations as to what we should be prepared for. We thought it was an initial consultation but after waiting 15-20 minutes, we were greeted by a woman named Brenda and brought back to a BEDROOM. Brenda is clearly not an accountant and I'm afraid she has no formal training whatsoever. She asked us to fax her more info. We let her know we would have to email the info stating that no one in the year 2015 uses fax machines anymore. She doesn't even have email. Patti is the only one with email and all 6 of the emails (the same one mind you bc they kept saying they didn't receive it) were supposedly never received and I had to make another appointment to drop them by. Meanwhile, I'm wondering why I am paying $300-$400 for someone who is not trained and has the worst communication on the planet when I thought I was paying for Patti who supposedly is licensed and a professional?? When I go back, they had me wait for 40 minutes!!!! They couldn't find my information! MY W2's, STOCK INFO, 401K INFO, etc..... MY HEART SANK AND BLOOD STARTED TO BOIL. How incompetent can you be with someones financial information??? FINALLY, Brenda takes me back to the bedroom again and states that she needs yet MORE information. Would have been great if you told me that ahead of time.... Absolutely unprepared and unprofessional. Bottom line: Communication is BEYOND TERRIBLE Professionalism is VOID Competence was never shown Tust was never established Do yourself a favor, for as awful as HR Block is- you'd be less frustrated than dealing with these people. We found A Plus Tax Service on Yelp. We also live really close to the place; so we decided to give it a try. Our Tax preparation got a little bit more complicated (well at least for me) after getting married and my husband having his business. It's not an office building in a plaza. It's a... House. turned office. This is where they lost one star... Our appointment was at 1pm and we were there a little bit before; and we weren't seen 45 mins later. Thankfully, I was allowed to just drop my W-2; and Brenda dealt with my husband and went from there. 2 weeks since; we already got our tax returns. We got more than expected. I like how they were able to tell us what could be written off. We'll definitely consider them again next year. read more

Located in the North part of San Jose she is conviently located, patient, informative and helpful throughout the process. The staff gives you a very simple chart to fill out prior to the meeting that allows you to quickly and conveniently get the final process completed. Many of the people we met had been going to Patti for years and that us feel very confident in out choice. I liked how our children get a discount on their tax filings as a family discount and guidance in their transition into the working word and tax paying part of society. My family and close friends highly recommend Patti and her staff for your bookkeeping and income tax paying experience. She is also very up to date on many of the different tax areas like, small business, property management, and mortgage refinancing situations. read more

Patti is really sweet. She got my tax returns done on time (with about a month left until deadline) and gave me a discount for having multiple returns to prepare. But she prepared one of my business tax returns wrong. The incorrect tax return is for a parent company that had some subsidiaries, and the income from those subsidiaries is supposed to be reflected on the parent company's return, but it wasn't and I didn't catch it until much later. If the subsidiaries' income was included, the income would have been about $10,000 less. Unfortunately, because of certain circumstances, amending it may increase the chance of audit (which could be a royal pain in the butt) so I'm going to eat the cost of the extra taxes I'll have to pay because of this mistake. However, she did make another mistake that seems will allow me to change from carrying a NOL forward to carrying it back, which works for me. Though a mistake is a mistake, and with 2 separate mistakes on the same return, the trust I have in her work has degraded. FYI my returns were about $300 per. Even with the discount she gave me, the extra cost in taxes makes this all cost even more. Also, email communication is non-existent. I've tried multiple times and nothing. By far this is one last down to earth, honest and very efficient tax consultants out there, she is on top of her game with so much knowledge and direction for maximizing your taxes. If you live in the Bay and are not already working with Patti, you are probably losing money like me by using some of the online self serve tax software or worse, paying much more out of pocket. I used to think this place was pretty decent, but not anymore. I had my taxes done in April of this year and they told me that both the State and Federal taxes owed would be automatically deducted from my bank account. Fast forward 3 months. Turns out only the Federal taxes were charged and the state has now sent me a past due (+ penalty) bill. I tried to get a hold of A Plus Tax Service to figure out my next move. I called 16 times during business hours and left 2 messages on their machine, no answer. I guess I'll just pay the State their penalty and never go to A Plus Tax Service again. read more

My taxes have been easy peasy for the past 6 years. This past year I worked for a ride share (Lyft) company and they did not send me paper work which made doing taxes on my own very difficult. This year I chose to use A Plus Tax Service. Patti and her staff are very easy to work with, professional, and thurough. I called Sunday morning mid March (prime time tax season) and Corina the receptionist managed to squeeze me in late the same day! That was a big deal to me because I wanted to be done with my taxes so that I could enjoy my weekends. The setting is very comfortable. This office has been in the community for years. It is an house turned business. When entering, the decor is very nice and felt like I was visiting a relative. Patti is great! She has a very calm demeanor and even though I was squeezed in, I never felt rushed. She took her time with me and answered all of my questions. She couldn't have made my experience any nicer. Before her, I was going to the "big guys" (hr block,jackson-hewitt to name a few) and her tax service was better and faster then them. I got my refund check in about 3 weeks and NO i did not have to pay extra. The prices those chains charge...they should get locked up for fraud. I will recommend A Plus Tax to anybody!!! read more
