We came across this groomer accidently....well, Nelson (the owner) had stopped my wife while walking the dog down our street one afternoon in December and handed her a business card offering a discounted pet grooming, which happened to be very good timing as our Lab was in need of a bath and we were not overly happy with the facilities at another local groomer we had recently visited. We opted to give A+ a shot and were pleasantly surprised by the services and work Nelson did. Nelson is open 7 days a week and will accommodate most anyone's schedules. He is well educated in pet health and grooming and is by appointment only....takes in one to two dogs at a time, so that the dogs are not stressed or having issues with one another. Basically, a personal spa treatment for your pet. Ha. My mother recently brought her Soft Coated Wheaten to Nelson after not being happy with her groomer's results (for years). After one session with A+, Zoe (the Wheaten) is going to be a regular at the spa. Long story short...Go to A+ for top notch pet grooming!! read more

I had been using the same groomer for my dogs for a long time. After a few bad haircuts on my Wheaten I was at a loss where to go. My son told me about A+ so I gave it a try. My dog came out looking beautiful and happy as I had ever seen her after a grooming. Today I took in a new foster puppy whose coat was overgrown and a bit smelly from neglect. She came out looking and smelling wonderful. Nelson, the owner is always accommodating and willing to go the extra mile for his clients. He now has another groomer working with him who is equally competent and helpful. Nelson has good knowledge of all the long haired breeds and he really does style them properly to the standard. This is my second time at this horrible place and I will never go back. My dog is bleeding from the cuts they gave her....he made excuses that his help didn't show up and he was rushed????? Seriously? Also, while his rate sheet said $45.00 for a small dog cut, he charged $74.00 for my Lasapoo. When I asked what the break down was, he said my dog sits so he needed an assistant. Hmm, when I went to pick her up she was still tied up to the table. Standing, not sitting. If you love your dog, stay away. read more

Mismanaged, stressed out groomer. I tried this place a number of times and after 3 bad grooming sessions that were overpriced for what they were, we will not go back. The last time we went they overbooked. I was told to leave my dog for 4 and a half hours. When I came back at that time, they needed another 30 minutes. There were at least 6 dogs hyper and running around. They hadn't cut my dog's hair yet and it looked so choppy by the time I left --for about $95??? No thanks. read more

Do not take your dog to this place! They quoted me a price of $75 to cut and bathe my English Setter, the were supposed to trim him and instead gave him buzz that looks ridiculous. On top of that the owner then decided to try and charge me $200. His only reasoning was because of "degree of difficulty"! Are you kidding me?! I know the dog is not easy to groom, he squirms a lot and because of this the vet gave him medicine to calm him down which worked very well. I objected to the price and tried to talk to the owner about this and all he said was "I'll do $175 take it or leave it!" What does that even mean? You're going to keep my dog or what? Absolutely stupid! I can understand an up charge of maybe 25-50% because he is a big dog but to charge almost triple of what I was told on the phone is a crime! I got robbed! I'll never step foot in this place again and suggest you don't either! read more

I brought my kitty to A Plus to be shaved, due to matting of her fur. Nelson handled her her with care and gentleness. He did an amazing job. I was able to watch while he groomed her. His skill with grooming a cat was evident. I was very impressed with with the results. read more

I am delighted to have Nelson and A+ in the area. Nelson is a knowledgable groomer, and based on the other reviews, understands the intricacies of the grooming of various breeds. For example, I have a Cairn Terrier and this dog needs a specific grooming style - hand stripping. This is a long and difficult endeavor and I found only the rare groomer in NJ offered it or even knowing how to do it. Before Nelson came to the area I was driving well over 1/2 hour to bring my dog to a competent groomer. Nelson is only 10 minutes away and is great. The best groomer around. Doesn't cage the dogs while they are waiting. Knows how to handle all breeds and is very gentle. He is clearly a dog lover and is kind to both the dogs and their human parents. His skill in grooming is quite evident. We have been taking our two cockpoos here for many years and never had a problem. In fact, we have always had the best results and the prettiest dogs when they were all done. This groomer is great. He schedules the dogs so that they do not have to wait in crates while others are being groomed. Mackie's cut was just the way I wanted it. When I came to pick Mackie up, they were playing fetch with him. Overall a great experience. I am about to call and make my next appointment. read more

Nelson called to tell me my dog had fleas. I was surprised because she is on monthly medication prescribed by the vet. So, I questioned him. He said I could come see for myself.Before I left my house I checked my other dog who was perfectly clear and had no evidence of fleas. I drove down and what he showed me was not a flea nor was it flea dirt. I worked in animal hospitals when I was younger, so I am quite aware of what to look for. Not to mention that when I showed up the man who was brushing her was not being nice to her. She kept trying to get to me after I walked in and he kept yelling at her to sit still. So I told him to stop talking to my dog like that. On my drive home Nelson called me to tell me he reviewed his tapes and his employee was not rude to my dog and then hung up on me!!! How unprofessional. We will NEVER go back there again. read more

Absolutely atrocious treatment of my daughter. He was aggressively cutting my terrier's nails and the dog was yelping and crying. My 10 year old dtr was concerned and upset and trying to verbally soothe the dog. Against my instincts, I tried him again for a brushing and at that visit IN FRONT OF MY 4 CHILDREN, he told me my daughter on the last visit was impolite and rude and that she should have been disciplined by us on the last visit and he was "mad all day". My daughter was so upset and when my husband called him to discuss his approach, he called my daughter a "spoiled brat" and hung up on him. We are truly horrified! So unless you can handle aggressive grooming of a pet, don't bring yourself or a sensitive child to watch. NEVER AGAIN. AWFUL!!!! read more

I've been going to Nelson for over 2 years now. The people that have negative things to say, would probably have negative things to say even if they liked the job. What I like about A + is how Nelson lets the dogs interact so they can socialize. I've never had a bad cut. My golden recently gave him a hard time cutting his nails, there was a struggle that pursued which caused my dog to get tangled in the strap. When I picked up my dog, Nelson apologized. He even asked if I wanted to see the surveillance footage. I didn't need to see anything...It took 5 people @ the vet to hold him down when cutting his nails. I also have a Newfoundland that loves to go to Nelson. It's a shame that people can smear someones name without even knowing that person. These are animals...it's not easy to keep them calm & steady. I would totally recommend based on my experience!!! read more

I was referred to A Plus Style Leash Pet Spa from my dentist who brings his Morkie (Maltase & Yorkie) to work. Max, the Morkie, is always perfectly groomed. Nelson does a fabulous job with both my dogs, a Yorkie and drama queen Chihuahua. They are more comfortable there than any other groomer. And Nelson is always flexible and tries his best. I wouldn't go anywhere else with my beloved fur babies! read more

First visit today with our 3 yr old Great Pyrenees Maggie and am very pleased with our experience. She looks and smells beautiful, I was pleased that she wasn't crated but rather, was wandering freely and there was nothing to hide as I had to walk all around to get her used to the place as I doubt she was ever groomed (we rescued her 3 months ago from NC). Anyhow. I wish I'd taken a before and after pic as she looks wonderful - perfectly groomed for her breed and while she seemed happy to see me as always, didn't sense any stress and given her coat is white, I'd be able to see if she was nicked (she wasn't). Very pleased - would've given 5 stars but the groomer was a bit late, so another client and I were waiting outside for him... read more

I brought my Lhasa Apso to A Plus Style Leash and was serviced by the owner known as Nelson and was completely dissatisfied with the experience. When I went to pick up my dog, she had blood on her head. I asked Nelson if he had accidentally cut her during grooming, and he denied having done so, saying the blood was from the other dog being groomed (a large 16 year old dog with open bloody sores). Such an explanation was even more shocking to me, in that I absolutely do not want my dog being in contact with another dog, especially like that. Once I got home, I realized the blood was from my own dog as she was continuing to bleed and her ear was sore. He must have also held her head tightly as her eyelid under her right eye the inner skin was pulled and red. My dog has been miserable and in pain since the incident, and I understand now why the groomer required me to sign a waiver when I picked her up. A warning to all: a groomer who requires a waiver does not care sufficiently to avoid harming your dog. Furthermore, I had been quoted $50-55, but was demanded $75, and then $65 once I reminded him of the quote. I have since asked for a refund but Nelson has angrily refused me such. He has stated an intent to file a lawsuit against me should I publish a negative review. Do not take your dog to A Plus Style Leash. I do not think a groomer should have a temper. All I could say to my dog was that I was sorry I put her through all of that torture. read more

A horrible experience! I have been taking my dogs to another groomer in the area for the past while - they do a decent but not phenomenal job, especially for the cost. My search for a truly phenomenal groomer in the area continues - but this was such a bad experience that it deserves a comment. I read the only two reviews about this place and though they are by a mother and son, and though this place is not so close, I decided to contact this groomer. He told me he is the best and most gentle groomer ever , but by no means the cheapest, But I would be thrilled with the result. He was able to fit my dogs in on a weekend and so I decided to try him. What a mistake!! I brought both dogs - the older dog is quiet and did fine. But he couldn't handle one of my dogs - a young male who is energetic but also shy and and can be anxious in new surroundings. I told the groomer his characteristics, which he said would be no problem. He told me the dogs looked great, he was so pleased to meet an owner that takes such great care of his dogs, and to just leave everything to him. In the end he could not handle my pup, and rather than backing off, he likely got too forceful and ended up abrading him around the ears and hind quarters to the point that my poor dog has abrasions and cuts and required topical ointments to control the itch and a halo to keep him from licking his wounds and causing an infection. I have never seen a result like this on any of my dogs from any other groomer, ever! As a courtesy, I sent the owner an email to let him know the dog wasn't doing well and when I didn't get a response I called him to let him know and give him an opportunity to at least apologize, show some concern, or recommend a way to rectify the problem. He was quite rude and told me that the problem will go away in a couple of days and he wasn't interested and didn't need to do anything about it and if I didn't like the result not to bother bringing my dog back! I made the mistake of informing him I would post a review reflecting my experience, and his response was that the problem was not his "grooming skills" but that my dog was very neglected. Of course, when he first met the dogs he thought they were beautiful (true!) and in perfect condition (also true, at least until this incident)!! His response and comments were inappropriate and malevolent to say the least. The worst part by far is the horrific experinece my dog must have had in his "salon." Hopefully my dog will forget it. What a disgrace! read more
