Amazing school! My husband and I both don't speak mandarin nor do we have a Chinese background but wanted our daughter to be exposed to and learn mandarin. She has been there less than a year and has come home counting, singing, and even speaking words to me in mandarin! I've observed her interactions with her teachers and knows she understands them completely (which I love the fact they only speak to them in mandarin). She comes home everyday with school work she has done. The past year I've seen she's grown to be more mature, confident, and a conversationalist. I pick her up from school and she has zero hesitation telling me about what she learned/ did at school and who she played with. Oh and it's so nice that everyday her teachers send me photos of fun projects they might have done and her playing with friends. Ms. Sharon and all her teachers are incredibly nice,take great care of the children, and do a great job teaching the children and even planning fun events/field trips for the kids! Our daughter loves the school, her teachers and the friends she's made. We're looking forward to sending off our son there too in the fall! read more

This review is long overdue!! My 4.5 year old has been there since she was 2 years old, so has progressed through 3 different classrooms on the 39th campus. All her teachers have been wonderful and caring, and she has learned so much! Great balance of play and academics. Teacher send daily updates with photos and messages through the Remind App. LOL i usually just look to see whether she finished her lunch (she usually does cause the teachers gently encourage it). Both of my children started attending A Plus at the age of 2. The teachers were loving, and my kids always looked forward to going to school. My son attended during the onset of COVID, and I deeply appreciated the school's efforts during that challenging time. Both of my children became conversational in Mandarin. My Son graduated in 2021, and my Daughter in 2024. My younger Daughter particularly enjoyed her daily chats with Teacher Wang, when she would ask what the Teacher is having for lunch and share stories about her weekend adventures. Teacher Lily also braided my daughter's hair every day, which she insisted was better than how we can do her hair at home. She still talks about the teachers at A Plus today. read more

A+ has been an exceptional preschool for my son, and I highly recommend it for those seeking a Mandarin immersion preschool that balances learning and fun for the kids at a reasonable cost. My son started at the Hillsdale site at 3.5, after going to home daycare, and has been there over a year. He has learned so much Mandarin while making friends and having fun.  First, the teachers really care about the children and help teach them manners and emotional intelligence.  Academically, the kids learn so much - I was shocked when I found out my kid could read multiple Chinese characters before he even turned 4! I appreciate the mix of circle time/learning songs, doing worksheets in class, creating various crafts, and free play indoors and out.  It's helpful that the teachers mainly speak Mandarin because I think the kids do tend to speak English with each other when playing, so the teachers ensure they learn Mandarin!  The teachers use the Remind app to send photos of the kids daily, along with notes about how well they're doing that day. This was especially helpful bc my kid is a terrible eater, so I would get updates on his improvement. The teachers were also great about encouraging him to finish his food. The only "downside" is that I wish they had a lunch/snacks option, only because I'm tired of packing and cleaning lunch containers.  Finally, Sharon, the director, is very on top of it and truly cares about each child - she helped immensely when we were choosing between classes because my kid was on the border.  All the teachers are very caring, and I especially love teacher Lily, who is so friendly and positive each day at drop off/pick up, and teacher Ping for her endless patience with my child. read more

It's with a tear in my eye as I say goodbye to A+ after 6 years total (we put 2 daughters in from age 2-5). Thank you to Sharon the director and all of the teachers, but especially Zhao, Jessie, Jenny, Lily, and Wang Laoshi! The teachers do a wonderful job of caring for the students and balancing the day with Chinese activities, songs, and lessons. The hours are also great for working parents, as is the pretty much year round schedule. My kids will look back at these preschool days fondly and I consider these teachers family. read more

My kids loved this school. During the 6 years we spent here all the teachers and Ms. Sharon were always responsive and consistent in providing a fun and nurturing environment to learn mandarin. We've been with the school for the last 6 years, through the pandemic and out. While there were some months years ago when they had teachers turnover and couldn't find teachers that could reliably stay on for a long period of time, the recent years post pandemic had been very stable and the teachers have been amazing. Of note the site director Katie LaoShi has been with the school for many years and when our kids see her she always give them a hug! You can feel that the teachers truly care about the kids and even gave my daughter little trinkets on her birthday and special occasions. Not sure about other preschools but A+ also does performances regularly along with potluck parties and pre pandemic they even had excursions which were very memorable! Taking train rides to redwood city for pizza, and visiting pumpkin patch during fall. We had many special memories and also made a lot of close connections with other families through all these activities! read more

Our little one had a wonderful time at A+ Immersion (Hillsdale location). He attended this school for almost 2 years before we moved out of the area. The teachers here are kind, caring, and attentive. The school sends out daily photos on an app to keep parents up to date with their kid's activities. The hours are convenient, and we also liked that the school is flexible and allows for part-time enrollment as well. In addition, we enjoyed attending our son's many school performances and events throughout the year. Our little guy made many friends here, and most importantly, he was happy at this school! read more

Ask for their license number before tour. Check out their record with CA department of social services. You'll be so surprised! I had a tour and was unhappy with the school environment, especially how crowded the classrooms were. I saw in person that a teachers took off her mask, blew her nose(really loud) and grabbed a child's hand without washing her hand! I spoke English with my kids but my husband speaks Chinese, so I thought a Chinese immersion environment would help them speak more Chinese. But after the tour with A Plus, I changed my mind. Building a good character is much more important than learning Chinese. The teachers here talk so loud with lousy attitude to the kids, but low-energetic at the same time. A teacher was sitting in a chair the whole time during the tour. They also had abusive complaints from the parents. I would never send my kids here. I still want to give two stars instead of one star because it's a school values Chinese, which is important in the Bay Area. Other than that, it's so sad there was nothing good I can say about this school. read more

Our two children have been going to A+ for 3 years. We would have sent our 3rd there if we weren't moving out of the Bay Area.  Based on my experience, I would recommend A+ but with a caveat -- it all depends on the teacher. When our oldest first started, we weren't sure we would keep our son there because there was a teacher that was pretty bad. As an example, on the first day of school, she was late and didn't acknowledge my nervous son, the anxious parents, or the fact that she was even late (which I learned, turned out to be quite frequent). Teaching young kids was definitely not her calling.  Unfortunately, she was my son's primary teacher for a few months before a couple of parents (including myself) complained about her behavior. Ultimately, I think she was transferred to the Hillsdale location to teach the older kids. That being said, our experience afterwards was phenomenal.  Ping LaoShi is truly a gem at the school. She is kind, warm, and professional. Sometimes I see her running and playing with the kids during recess.  She seems to truly enjoying being a teacher. After 3 years, my son now goes to a mandarin immersion public school.  Four months into the school year at the first parent-teacher conference, his kindergarten teacher said he is the best mandarin speaker in the class. Also, whenever we visit my parents, by default, both kids speak to them in mandarin,  Of note, we do not speak mandarin at home. The current teachers are amazing. Ping Laoshi is the VERY (!) best. Tina Laoshi is new but she has been very patient, receptive, and very communicative (our child is going through some challenging developmental leaps). Katie LaoShi (site director) is so warm, energetic, and funny. Her "hellos" are infectiously happy. Importantly, their Covid protocol, led by Sharon, has been impressive. Given their quick response to Covid, we ended up keeping our oldest for an additional year instead of enrolling him in TK. It was the best decision we made. read more

A+ is a wonderful place for a young children to explore Chinese language and culture. One of the biggest things I emphasize to my children as a parent is to learn to speak Chinese and a plus is the exact opportunity for that. I learned about a plus from my sister who sent my niece there and had a good experience with it. When I went for a tour it can be a little misleading because it is located very close to a busy street and next to a auto shop but once you enter the school you walk into a different world where the classrooms are thoughtfully organized. The playground is one of the best it has a large play area and very well shaded. There is excellent communication between the staff and parents via their app. We've left a plus due to a move and Saddened that we were unable to find anything that quite compares to it. read more

Our child has been going here for four months now. So far, so good. Take a look at my other reviews if you want to know the sad story of our search for a good day care / preschool. (I haven't reviewed all the other preschools that we toured but if I did, they would get somewhere between one and three stars). Sharon, the director of the Hillsdale location, is responsive, has a genuine concern for the children's emotional and mental development (including an emphasis on Mandarin language instruction), a strong focus on safety (insisting that all parents sign in and out, buzzer required to enter, etc.) If you haven't tried to find a good preschool in the Peninsula, you may be assuming these basics are "givens" but trust us, they are not. Very few preschools cover all these areas adequately and A+ Immersion is one of them. We are glad that our child has found a nice "home away from home". She enjoys it here and we can see the improvement in her Mandarin pronunciation (which was outrageously bad before) and vocabulary, confidence, and thought processes since she enrolled. read more

One of the former teachers in the toddler classroom frequently yelled at kids and shamed them for completely age-appropriate behaviors. My daughter literally came home one day saying "come to class now, otherwise I'll beat you to death" to her stuffed animal in Chinese. We speak English at home and no one outside of school has ever used that kind of language around her. The school denied everything but did transfer the teacher to another location to "monitor her behavior" for a few months before moving her back to the after school program again. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because my child did learn a lot of Mandarin there and Ms. Ping is wonderful. But not every teacher offers a safe learning environment, and the administration lacks the transparency and ability to properly handle abusive behaviors. Now having the hindsight and ability to compare with other programs, we know what a quality preschool program with loving teachers can look like, and we really regret sending our child here for as long as we did. read more

After kept my kids home one and half year. We decided to sent them back to school. I toured this school, and I found they are doing very strict due to the COVID that makes my family feel safe and we enrolled my little girl to this school. In the first month, my daughter always said she didn't want to go to school. Also, the teacher chat to me everyday to talking about my daughter's expression. The teacher said she always stayed alone and even not played any toys and games. That is so different from home. I think she's so scared and shy to communicate with others. You know, stayed home almost 2 years and no going out, no see anyone except family. I understand her feeling and the teacher asked me take her to the parks and playgrounds and let her contact more people. And at school all teachers are helping her to adapt to the school life. And they have an app to share the funny moments happened at school. Now my daughter likes to go to school and always singing Mandarin songs, talk to her grandparents in Mandarin. I'm very grateful for all teachers in A plus immersion preschool. Thanks for their patience and professional. I'll recommend A plus to the kids who want to learn Mandarin. read more

My husband and I found A+ Immersion last year while looking at Mandarin preschool programs for our now 2 year old. Glad to have found it because we were able to get our son enrolled, we hear there is a waiting list now! Our son loves his teachers and classmates and talks about them all the time. The students are divided into 4 groups depending on their age group so you know they are learning/playing with age appropriate programs. They accept students who are not potty-trained. They have half-day and full-day programs. The students are taught Mandarin but some of the teachers also speak Cantonese. The school always prepare the parents with an email of the curriculum and meal plan for the week so you know what to expect. This is helpful also for kids with allergies. We have to bring in our own soy milk since they only provide low-fat milk. The owner is usually always available, she is hands-on with her students as well, plus she's the one that prepares the meals! read more

My son, now 3.5 years old has been going to A+ Mandarin immersion (Hillsdale branch) for a year now and we love it. His Mandarin went from pretty much nonexistent to speaking simple sentences back to the teacher and our Mandarin speaking nanny. It was a great way to start preschool because they offer part-time, and then allowed us to add more days as he got older. They even helped during the potty training process. He loves the teachers there, especially Ms. Zhao, and he has many friends. He's opened up a lot the past 6 months and we see him start conversations and play with new kids at the playground as well after attending A+. We plan to send my other son there when he turns 2yo. read more

When I enrolled my daughter at A+ immersion preschool, I could not imagine that my daughter was going to count in Chinese after a few weeks even more when she attends the school part time and we are not Chinesse speakers but It happened. Nevertheless, what I like most of the school it is the communication. Mrs Sharon and her team keep you up to date about your child through the daily journal, the monthly schedule, parents conferences, face to face comments, e mails... Their program is well structured with balanced activities like cooking classes, yoga, circle time, story time, songs, art and crafts, manipulative activities. We are very happy with the school and hope they keep working hard to keep this high level for a long time. read more

We are so lucky to find A Plus Immersion. We needed a change from our previous "big chain" day cares and really wanted a bilingual experience for our son who was not yet three. We were fortunate enough to get off the wait list at A Plus, and we were both excited and nervous. The school really is immersion: all Mandarin, essentially no English. My wife and I don't speak any Mandarin - which means our son also did not speak any Mandarin. This made us a little apprehensive about how he would fit in at first. The owner Ms. Sharon and the other teachers were very reassuring: the first few weeks would be tough, but after that he would get it. And it was totally true! They gave him a ton of attention and made sure he caught up with the other kids who had been there longer or who spoke Mandarin at home. Eight months in he speaks Mandarin at a near-native level. He can carry on conversations with our Mandarin-speaking friends. It is amazing! Just wish I understood more of what he said. He also has not suffered at all in learning English - he knows all the letters, the sounds of the letters, and is already reading some words. He will be incredibly ready when it comes time for Kindergarten. We also like that the class sizes are small and they have many organized art, free play, and educational activities. The teachers give daily updates in notebooks for the parents, which is very useful. The full-day schedule and minimal school holidays are designed to accommodate two working parents, and the parents community is great. Also our guy is very potty-resistant so fortunately they are willing to put up with changing his diapers until he's ready, unlike some other preschools. read more

We have been very happy with A+ after about a year there. Our daughter has been going since she was 2 years old. Her Mandarin is excellent and her vocabulary is broadening all the time. She has so much fun there with her teachers and classmates in her small cohort group. The field trips and pot luck lunches they do to let parents join in periodically are fun. Even Waipo (Grandmother on mother's side) goes sometimes if we can not. The teachers are really excellent. I think the owner/manager's background in pre-schools really shows as she is able to identify and hire really great teachers that can handle the academic, and more importantly the behavioral challenges of pre-school students. read more

Q has been here for about a year and loves it! Her teachers make learning fun and instil fun in learning! I've observed the teachers to be very nurturing, patient, and supportive of all of the kids -- even the kids that are not their main students. It's evident when I see the much younger kids running in and giving hugs to the teacher for the older kids and vice-versa. What we also love: * Daily journal entries on our daughter's activities. Ms. Sharon and the teachers respond to questions and give feedback regularly. * The teachers (Miss Bao Ai and Miss Li have been our main teachers) put thoughtful observations on the children's learning. Case in point: I let Ms. Bao Ai know that we're working on Q's focus and listening during dinner time (she's great at school, horrible at home). Ms. Bao Ai also asked for some reinforcement with listening/focus during circle time. Then she made an adjustment: she wove in a tiny bit more English followed up with Mandarin for Q and the "focus" issue was more of a language comprehension issue and noticed an improvement with Q's focus. I wish I could say the same at home! *Plenty of free play time, which to me, is important for kids to learn to socialize as well as come up with their own imaginative play -- like "Super Hero Family"! *Pot-lucks and social mixers for parents to meet and see their child in action with peers *Arts and crafts projects. Who knew that perler bead projects could get a group of little girls sitting quietly and intensely focused (while developing hand/eye coordination, fine motor skills, and tactile learning of the alpabet and numbers)? *Bigger kids get to cook things like "doggie biscuits" or moon cakes, which they prep and craft, the teachers bake, and they eat at snack time *Hours and holiday schedule that are flexible for working parents *Ms. Sharon (the director) was very accommodating with adding days to Q's schedule as slots become available *Hot meals and no juice! We are not native Mandarin speakers but from what our relatives tell us, Q's tones and accent are very good. She's often singing Chinese songs and even if she doesn't know every single word yet, our main hope is to establish a continued interest in the Chinese language and an ear for the proper tone. read more

I can't say enough and how happy I am with A Plus preschool. I took my just turned 2yrs old son to visit a few preschools around the area and this is the only place that my LO didn't want to leave (on his first visit). The teachers are patient, loving, and super sweet. A Plus provides healthy meals and snacks WITH fresh fruits and milk every day. The kids seem to enjoy their meal every time I am there to pick up my son. I also love that they have field trip every other month. A Plus definitely not old school in their way of teaching kids. I like the play-based approach, using creativity to teach little kids. Finally, one of my favorite is to read the diary that the teachers write about what my LO did in school that day. Wonderful experience! Our daughter attend A+ (Hillsdale location) for nearly 2.5 years and has learned so much. Neither my husband nor I can speak Mandarin and our daughter is counting, singing, speaking, writing in Mandarin and learning to use the abacus. The teachers are really good with the kids and there is a fun outdoor area that the children play in twice a day. We will miss it as we move on to kindergarten. Sharon runs a really great program. I found this wonderful preschool after alot of searching and visiting other preschools in foster city & san mateo. My son Brandon is 3yrs old and is loving everyday that he spends there. They have a very organised schedule, filled with fun & learning activities.There is also a sunny outside play area filled with interesting toys and games ( which is brandons favourite place!). The warm and family atmosphere is apparent as soon as you walk in the front door, Miss Sharon and her staff are very professional, assert and wonderful with Brandon and all his friends that go there. Highly recommend this preschool based on the quality of the staff, Chinese learning, and fun play/activities I have seen. Transitions to preschool can be scary, but with the amazing attentive staff it was pretty smooth. I knew going from a small in home daycare to a medium sized preschool, my daughter would have to get used to how things worked at the new place. I recall the first day when I dropped her off, she didn't cry but was quiet, probably observing the new environment and new kids. Her teacher Ping Laoshi, told me at pick up that all the sudden during lunch my daughter started crying. Ping Laoshi thought it was a bit out of the blue and asked if she needed to go potty and after she went potty, she was ok again. When Ping Laoshi told me this, I knew the staff there was attentive and in tune enough to figure out how to help my daughter transition. Even though my daughter was potty trained, she wasn't used to going potty without being prompted or accompanied which is the norm at preschool. So at first she often peed her pants or ended up going on the potty but still making a mess of her pants, but Ping Laoshi was there to slowly help her learn to be more independent. And now she only has the occasional accident. Now my daughter really enjoys going to her preschool. She has formed close bonds with her teacher and many of her classmates. She brings home a lot of fun and varied art projects. And one of the best parts is that she speaks Chinese super well. She can go back and forth between Chinese and English with ease. She even translates things for her dad who doesn't speak Chinese and when he tries to, she will correct his pronunciation. And she sings a bunch of Chinese songs, many of which I don't completely understand (I only speak a little bit). On top of that, the school is well run and very organized. The weekly schedule with lesson plan is published prior so you know what they are up to. The teachers put in a lot of extra effort to organize special events like the easter egg hunt, various field trips, and the occasional potluck celebrations where the students do a show for the parents. There was some recent parent feedback about the school to Sharon, the owner, so she has made a few upgrades and changes to address the concerns. They recently removed meals from their services, but this doesn't bother me since I actually prefer controlling my daughters diet more (even though it is more work for us). I feel lucky that we have our daughter at this high quality preschool. I am glad we were able to get off the wait list! read more

My daughter loves this preschool; I love this preschool! She asks to go to school even on the weekends. She is having fun and learning Chinese at the same time . The program is set up in such a way that the children are learning in a manner that is relevant and fun to them. Its a hands-on curriculum. For example, if they are learning the word bubble in Chinese they might do a fun science experiment that involves creating and playing with bubbles --all the while Chinese vocabulary & language is reinforced. Ms Sharon understands the type of environment students need to thrive. She has created a loving and nurturing environment and students learn how to properly behave towards one another and thus feel happy and safe. I have not seen the sort of cliquish behavior that I found amongst students at previous schools. My daughter has been fully embraced by the staff and her fellow peers of all ages. Where as in previous schools I have seen students ostracizing, teasing and bullying one another, I have not seen this at this school. I realize how much this is due to the teaching style and learning environment. Teachers are constantly involved with the students here and so nothing goes unchecked. There also isn't the classroom chaos you see in many other schools who have over crowded classrooms or a large number of new kids thrown in all at once. The teacher to student ratio here is excellent and so each student gets very individualized attention and so if your child thrives off such attention as mine does he or she will love it here. Working parents will love this school for it offers great start and end times (7:30amd-6pm). Many schools don't start till 8 or 8:30 which does not work for most working parent schedules. Also there are no excessive vacation days. I looked at a number of schools where they took long winter, spring and summer breaks plus holidays. How does a working parent deal with this: finding a baby sitter and then on top of that paying the same yearly tuition or more as I am? Speaking of tuition, their rates are very reasonable and they offer flexible schedules which parents who don't need or can't afford full-time care will love. We actually started off as part-timers because I am home with a newborn and so didn't need to have her in full-time. However, she loved it so much and was gaining so much more from school than home, that we put her in full-time and she is as happy as a clam with it. Having her full-time was the best decision because they offer such great morning and afternoon programs and each day they have a fun special activity like yoga, cooking, art, science, etc., Even during open play time teachers are interacting with students and offer fun activities where they are covertly reinforcing Chinese. For example,during outside free-play a teacher set up fun water toy where students could "go fishing". Though it was free play she was interacting with them and they were learning words related to fish and water etc., Another time a teacher was singing with students in Chinese while they played play-dough. And all this with the added bonus of immersing the child in Chinese so with all these enriching activities she is learning Chinese at the same time. We tried other programs (Montessori included) and we did not have the results as we do now. Before it was like pulling teeth getting her to respond in Chinese but now she is far more willing and able to do so. Though my daughter has been studying Chinese since she was a baby, not all students have previous Chinese exposure. There is a wonderfully diverse group (many have Chinese speaking parents but many don't) and this diversity makes for wonderful culture sharing. The thing that really sold me on this school was its strong parent-teacher communication. Previously I could never get my daughter to tell me what she was up to at school and had to wait for a parent-teacher conference to get an idea of what she was doing. It made for some very dull conversations in the car: "So what did you do today?" "Played." And that was the end of my daughter's willingness to converse on the subject. Now I can actually mention things I know she did in order to prompt a reply and goad a real conversation out of her. How do I know what she is up to? Each child is given a notebook which the teacher writes a detailed paragraph in daily about the child~ Wow! Plus a detailed weekly curriculum, vocabulary list and lunch menu is passed out. Even if you are not interested in Chinese (though I can go on and on about why learning Chinese is a great idea) this is an incredible school --so why not get the added bonus of a second language --its good for the brain and future language acquisition, And if you ARE interested in having your child learn Chinese, A Plus Immersion is the best place for them to do so. You won't find a better school out there. read more

I would give this school 4 and 1/2 stars if available. The reason I don't give a 5-star review is that the place could use an upgrade (bathroom) and it is not spanking shiny and new and it doesn't provide lunch -- but I am SO glad we didn't let that deter us. My son loves this school, his teacher Ping Laoshi is great. She's attentive, patient, loving and really engages with the children at their level in the classroom and on the playground. We feel so lucky to have her in our son's classroom. The other teachers are kind and seem to also know our son's personality. I like how the teachers truly work with the child at their level and accept the child with their changes rather than fit them into a mold that the school envisions. (You can read my other review about another Chinese immersion school in Burlingame about our very negative experience.) Our pre-schooler has been attending A+ since he turned 3. At his previous school, he would state he didn't want to go and seemed very reluctant and resigned to get in the car. Now, he always asks when he can go to the New school (A+ Immersion), and he walks right in JOYFULLY. I enrolled my kid to A plus because I wanted my kid to learn Chinese and the yelp review was great. However, the quality seems to be deteriorating as the owner wants to do cost cutting. As a result, food is no longer provided (not even milk nor snack). Toys are getting old and were never replaced for 5 years. The teacher-student ratio is no longer ideal like it used to advertise. Sometimes when teacher goes on vacation, they don't even hire backup teacher. The facility is very old and hardly cleaned. The school used to be good but it is no longer the case. Since moving our daughter to this program almost 4 months ago, when she turned 3, we have seen a marked improvement in her imaginative play and creativity. She loves the environment, the other children and her teachers. The teachers are well-qualified and loving. We had come from another pre-school that was just not meeting our expectations and, in making a change, the quality of the teachers and the program were extremely important to us. We are so thrilled to have found A+ Immersion Preschool! The facility is great and laid out well for the children. They offer a wide range of activities, including yoga, cooking and science projects. The curriculum is great - they have a monthly theme and will provide craft projects for the children to come home with, which our daughter loves. The children are allowed to be independent and they behave well as a group. We are only English speaking in our household and are so excited that our daughter is also having the opportunity to learn Chinese. I can't speak highly enough about this program. read more
