This place can be easily missed if you're along Sucat road because it's quite discreet-looking and has no parking. But inside is a different story--the vibe is reminiscent of Bellini's. It's cozy, homey, and filled with Italian-themed decor, a leaning tower of Pisa, and so on. You'll forget that you're in bustling, polluted Sucat road! We got the Aglia Oglio Pasta, and a Mushroom Risotto (that they made vegan just for me! Just ask nicely). Both dishes were really topnotch and exceeded our expectations (though to be honest, we had none at this particular time. I mean, any meal after a 10-hour trip from Vigan, Ilocos will be satisfying). Their servers are very accommodating, and at that time they were offering us these really fresh, gigantic portobello mushrooms they had that looked so tempting (but were quite pricey--though to be honest, I STILL think about that moment. What if we had gotten those mushrooms?!?! WHAT IF). Just like Bellini's, at the end of your meal you are treated to a complimentary jigger of Italian sweet wine. Bellisimo!

Every single location delivered the same top-notch service and excellent food. It seemed that there was always a waiting list. But what they did that was so smart was give us the menu and and an order form and that gave us the time to peruse the menu, decide what we want and place our orders. By the time we sat down, it didn't take long before our orders were delivered. The first time we dined, there were only two of us, so we ordere the small plates. Another smart idea to have the choice of small, medium and large orders depending on the number of people. We've always dined family style so we were able to taste different foods. We've ordered the essential Filipino foods i.e., different kinds of sisig, salpicao, sinigang, adobo, pancit palabok, buko pie, puto bumbong, halo halo. And every single dish was phenomenally tasty, especially for us who are all residing in the US. Manam will always be our first choice whenever we are in Manila.

Ordered their garlicky chicken and pork adobo, sisig, garlic rice, and turon. The adobo was fine, I think it would have been better just with the pork vs with chicken. Sisig was on point. The garlic rice was fine as well. The turon didn't have bananas in it but mangoes instead. I had thought it would have had both mangoes and bananas, but was mistaken. Overall, a decent place for casual sit-down vibes.

Save for the pizza, because we like to mix it up every now and then. It starts with Zuppa di Funghi (Mushroom soup, P205) that goes well with Carpaccio di Manzo (P305), Tagliatelle con Prosciutto e Tartufo (P485), Tagliatelle alla Carbonara (P290) and Salmone (Pizza with smoked salmon, P620). For Mother's Day we mixed it up with Rib Eye Angus Beef Pizza (P790). My family and I could forgo with the pizza, soup and carbonara but we cannot leave this place without ever eating Carpaccio di Manzo and Tagliatelle con Prosciutto e Tartufo. But we're kidding about forgoing pizza, soup and carbonara. That will never happen! You want a full-on Italian experience, you have to take the necessary steps from minestres to antipastis to pastas to pizze and dolcis. But can I just talk about Carpaccio di Manzo and Tagliatelle con Prosciutto e Tartufo again? As someone with Crohn's, food can be a little difficult. It's always hit or miss. So I'm always cautious about food. However, since I'm guaranteed the best of the best by their head chef (they don't serve dishes if their ingredients are not at par with their standards), the thinly sliced tenderloin of their Carpaccio di Manzo melts in your mouth so effortlessly. It goes well with the arugula, olive oil, parmesan and white button mushroom. Trattoria Poggio Antico promises authenticity with their food. They even make their own pasta! My first try with Tagliatelle con Prosciutto e Tartufo (yes, they like their long food names here) was love at first taste! I never looked back and remains to be one of my favourite pasta dishes after my Mom's home-made carbonara! It's a flat green pasta with parma ham, button mushroom in truffle sauce. I know I will think about this before I go to bed. Oh, sweet Tagliatelle.

I've always wanted to go but never found the time or opportunity, until last night. The rumors were true. Despite the peculiar choice for the location--a gas station in the middle of EDSA, for crying out loud, Va Bene served us some of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. We were greeted by their friendly, very accommodating staff, and it turned out to be a deliciously beautiful evening from there. The interiors, in my opinion, were nothing extravagant: glass-top tables overlooking paintings underneath, dark-painted chairs with tacky glossy varnish, and on one side a floor-to-ceiling shelf with their wines, cookbooks, and pasta-making paraphernalia for sale. I wouldn't say this was the work of a professional interior designer, but I felt the heart and the unassuming authentic Italian taste. Then came our food. I ordered the Lasagna a la Michele--lasagna with Italian sausage, bolognese, and parmesan cheese sauce. Presentation-wise, it looked like your typical lasagna served on a large hot plate instead, but it tasted far from the ordinary. Each forkful of the pasta layers was rich and heavenly. All I could think was, "I wouldn't want to gobble this up so quickly, it's too good!" The only thing missing was a piece of bread on the side or a glass of wine, so you wouldn't feel so "umay" if it was the only thing you ordered. But I have no complaints at all about the flavors and portion size. With this plate alone, I'm one more happy customer. I tried my friend's Black Ink Tagliolini--mixed seafood, marinara sauce, light tomato cream sauce, and it was nothing short of flavorful too. The sweetness from the seafood was the best partner for the very "malinamnam" black ink pasta. I wouldn't change a single thing about the dish. Va Bene also offers other main dishes if you want more than just pasta. We also ordered their Ciao Burger--chicken breast bruger served with homemade mayonnaise, semi-dried tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, buffalo mozzarella, arugula leaves, and crispy potatoes. And my for an Italian restaurant, it's one burger I truly enjoyed. The ingredients, especially the arugula, were so fresh and green and it just made me feel happy stuffing them in my mouth. So when all the food was gone and we were happily paying for the above-average price of our bill while complimenting our server for the amazing food, he offered us some Lemon Drop shots--some lemon syrup with vodka that tasted good but was actually pretty strong. Will Va Bene ever run out of surprises? Overall, after just my first time here, Va Bene has become one of my favorite restaurants in Manila. (I'm eyeing that Parpadelle for my next visit.)

Now that I'm older, I've come to realize that Italianni's is not so much of a corporate franchise as I believed it to be. The menu is expansive; they certainly have lots to offer by way of variety, and their food quality is on par. Every dish is carefully prepared, and you can taste the food quality in every bite. We ordered the mixed pizza (4 different types of pizzas in one), osso bucco pasta, truffle fries, calamari, chicken parm, mediterrean pasta, and much more for our Christmas Day dinner. Everything was exceptional! I've never had osso bucco before, and Italianni's version hit it out of the park. Our kids, just like many other kids, absolutely love pizza. Their quatro formaggio was insanely delicious thanks to their addition of gouda. My husband and I ordered the Italian Smash (gin, simple syrup, basil, lemon juice), and were so impressed by how tasty it was. Italianni's has proven their shift from a franchise Italian restaurant to finer casual dining. Their Shangrila Plaza location is situated perfectly in a row of restaurants and has both indoor and "outdoor" dining areas. Service is wonderful, as well. I highly recommend Italianni's for any family dinners or even dinners with friends or clients.
