Yet, unlike some inexpensive fruit and veg stands.. where you feel like you'd have to scrub the skin off your produce before you'd be convinced it was sanitary enough to eat... Ali's, wonderfully, doesn't feel cheap... there's nothing dingy or unclean about the place... everything is kept tidy and orgnanised and beautifully stacked. The other thing that keeps me coming back here is the shop's proprietor. He is always smiling and courteous - and well, one of those kindly sort of people that you just *want* to buy from... again, try finding someone like that at Tesco's HQ!

The guys at the veg stalls shouting 'PAND A BANANAS' with their cockney accents, the vibrant global stores selling tropical food and fresh spices . Those were the days when Queens Market use to be eclectic and full life. 18 years later and Queens Market is now Queens Ghetto. I feel let down =( She has lost her charm and I've lost a part of my childhood. Right at the front of the market you're greeted with one BIG massive stall that sells S & M lingerie. I remembered walking past there once and witnessed a poor little boy ogling at the mannequins goodies. There are stores in there that you would find at any high street and there's tons of pounds shops (most probably to fill in the spaces). Queens Market only has a few good stores left like the Asian, African, Caribbean and the fish and chip shop. The awkward scent of rotten fish & meat will stick to your nasal passage for awhile. Goodies include the haberdashery stall - highly competitive prices and very valuable with the increased interest recently in dress making. There are numerous fabric stalls and a first rate curtain shop with some very good quality fabrics, tracks, swags and rails. The weekly vegetable shopping is economical with an excellent selection of fruit. It certainly isn't littered with pound stalls but there is a range of hairdressing and cosmetic shops selling very reasonably priced human hair extensions and accessories. The market and Green Street is the only place in Newham that we still shop. It has a unique charm without hordes of dreary clone shops.

The stalls are all under cover and range from Delis to shops selling silk saris alongside African grocers. An interesting mix of shops due a rich tradition of immigrants from Poles to West Africans to the local area. I've been shopping here for years as they have such a lovely garden centre where I purchase all my vegetable plants for the garden every spring. There are a cafe for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of shopping.

None of the same shops are here anymore it seems to only cater for the locals now, Eastham has changed so much over the last ten years and the markets just has busy great place to get forign foods and cheap goods. I shop here regularly in order to top up my weekly organic fruit and a veg box (although the produce here is not organic). Don't ask me how they do it, but somehow they manage to offer fruit and veggies that are not only of much better quality that anything you could get at a supermarket, but that are also much more affordable. Plus, the opening times are very convenient and the place is run by extremely friendly people (who will recognise and chat with you when you come in more than once) - so what more could you want? Local businesses like this beat chain stores by a million at any time. Note: they only accept cash.

Out of the major supermarkets ASDA is far and away my favourite. Their superstores are packed full…read moreof goodies. They have the clothing label George, toys, CD's and loads of household goods. The range of food is excellent and the least costly of all the major stores. On site they have a pharmacy, optician, photo centre and a petrol station. They are also open 24hrs on a Tues, Wed, Thurs and Fri which means avoiding busy shopping hours. This is a great superstore and the only one I will do a big food shop at.

During lunchtimes and at weekends, you will always find long queues, and even though it happens everyday, there is only ever one or two checkout staff there. I think that this is a pretty small store compared to the one down the road in Canning Town. This store got refitted around 3 years ago and still looks in good shape. I think its going for the healthy option as the store is mainly fruit and veg. Not the usual thing you would expect, but good for the odd thing on your way home. Not enough choice for you weekly shop.
