Rich came highly recommended from a friend, so I didn't even bother looking at his reviews. He came for an estimate, but never sent his quote in. I assumed he was busy over the holidays, so I waited a month and then checked back with him. I got a rude response that he "sent it a long time ago". I should have paid more attention to his tone, but again, I was going on a personal recommendation. We hired him for a $2,000 priming-painting-staining job of our high end cabinets (Brookstone), that were in near perfect condition, but of a very unfortunate 1980's stain of wood. The job started off great. I was very impressed with the "clean room" of sorts (think Dexter) his crew constructed in our garage--hence, the second star. They got most of the work done in three days, and I even commented to my husband that it was the best experience we've had with a Denver contractor so far. ...and then it fell apart. A big mess was left in the kitchen for several days that I eventually had to clean up myself. Communication dropped off. They guys didn't show up to finish the work on two different occasions when we were expecting them. There are hairs painted into several of the cabinets. There are small globs of paint all over the place on some cabinet doors, while others have none. It really doesn't look good. The worst part was that I needed the cabinet details stained with a brown glaze to match the large island I bought for the kitchen, and that was never done. I had a picture from my interior designer, and I specifically recall discussing color options when he came for the quote. Then suddenly he pretended he had no idea what I was talking about (until I sent him a copy of his own contract that had the glaze noted), and then claimed he never saw a picture. I find it suspicious that someone would bid on a job and include the line item of the glaze without knowing what his customer wanted (translation: he absolutely saw the picture). He refused to finish the job, and tried charging me for the full amount, minus a very small sum that is supposedly all it would cost me to have someone else complete his unfinished work. Thankfully, he did provide me with a detailed contract that included the glaze, and stated that the final balance wouldn't be due until the project was complete. His own contract will save me if he were to try to take me to collections. So I was left with a mess and a sloppy partially-completed job. And now I the need to find someone to fix his mistakes and complete the glaze...and no one likes fixing other peoples' messes, especially in a market like this where work is abundant. It definitely wasn't worth the 50% I paid in good faith. I wish I'd never met Rich. Keep looking! read more

My husband and I just purchased a definite fixer-upper and had started painting. We got as far as priming the kitchen and decided to hire a pro. I found Rich through Angie's List and contacted him to get an estimate of how long and how many people it would take to paint a few rooms in our house. Rich came out to the house the next day, took a look around, and said he'd be able to get me a quote by the end of the day. The quote he gave me was amazing and included paint! Rich recommended Sherwin-Williams for paint so my husband and I went to the store down the street and picked the colors we wanted for each room. We set up a date for the work and Rich and Josh showed up on time, Rich went over the job with Josh, and Josh got right to work. He finished the 4 rooms we wanted in 2 days, and a couple of hours on a 3rd day. We have paint leftover which is great, because we're having new windows put in soon, and we'll be able to use it for touch ups. Speaking of touch ups, Josh did a great job patching holes in the walls prior to painting, and every nook and cranny looks wonderful! Rich came by on the final day to look around and double check all the work. Rich and Josh were both a pleasure to work with. I will definitely be using A Brush with Success for any future painting needs! read more

Provided me with a bid, based on phone conversation and two photos of my fairly geometrically challenging house (labor-intensive). He never came out to even see the house. Rather odd, and risky from homeowners perspective. In keeping with several other postings I've read. I hire a contractor to get a job done right the first time, hassle-free. These guys are exceptional. Rich Lyons (the principal) runs a super tight ship-- oversees quality and workmanship better than we would have. His painting team is a delight -- hard working, polite, funny, warm..... And they are CLEAN!!!! They clean up after themselves, don't leave nails/debris laying around.... Most importantly, they are as honest as the day is long. We initially hired them for a $1000 inside paint job. We will end up spending significantly more with them. They were so good we just kept adding on rooms. They will have painted almost the entire interior of our 4,300 sq ft house. In addition, we will be using them to paint the outside of our home in the spring. Don't bother researching other painters. Just save your self some time, call Rich and get the job done right. (PS: Rather than buy new kitchen cabinets, Rich and his team painted them in oil. They cabinets are beautiful -- for a teeny fraction of what new cabinets would have been. update on feb 5: this guy has our security codes, secret stashes.... even our children (if he would take them). Rich was very professional and always answered my questions; he is very friendly. His bid beat 3 other competators, which was important considering we were given a budget by our homeowners association. He matched my colors perfectly and his suggestion for the satin finish was spot on. From start to finish, it was about a week from when the paint was dropped off to the final completion. My final walk went smoothly and the few notes I made regarding touch-ups were completed quickly. He accepted the bid knowing the homeowners association would be processing his payment. A Brush with Success came out to our home to paint our living room and dining room. They were very professional and we thought very affordable as well. The paint team that came out to help us came prepared and went above and beyond to get everything perfect....even took extra care with our very difficult blinds. The owner Rich took many steps to make sure we were taken care of (calls to let us know the painters were on their way and a follow up email to make sure everything went well) and we just felt like we were in very good hands. What a bad experience. I just wrote a check for $20,500 to make him go away, so this work was not inconsequential. The painting was fine and $4,440 of stain looks nice, but this would have been much better if Rich Lyons was an honest man and either did not oversell in his bid of what preparation would be done on the doors and trim or could have civil conversation about changes in scope. Also it would have been nice if he would have actually had two coats of paint applied as he quoted in his bid. Unfortunately you are not allowed to question Rich or his billing without threats from him and attempt to try to run his billing for a host of fabricated items. It also seems that his approach is to sell you one thing then have sub-contractors (the actual painting crew that does the work) do less work, such as don't prep anything....that is he intentionally tells them to not do the scope of what he knows he bid. That seems to be the same experience others have had and it was very evident to me in living through this and talking with the painters (my Spanish is rusty, but not that rusty Rich). Unprofessional, unethical, and threating...what a jerk. For those who have also wasted time and energy dealing with Rich I feel your pain. I am finally done with him. Good riddance. I read on here a poor review as I was looking up his address to send Rich his money. I'm telling you this crew is the best. I've used his guy JOSH on an hourly basis 3 separate times and he does and absolute AWESOME job. He also did my entire 1/2 of my basement in one day and the lines were perfect. I won't use anyone else. I'm not sure what happened with this other guys complaint but I had to write on here and let you know I have had ZERO issues and my guy has used his own tape when I ran out and used his own caulking when I ran out! The results speak for themselves. I've had no less then 4-5 people ask me who painted compared to the DISASTER i had when I had some other clowns paint my upstairs. fair pricing, great results, fast work.....what more could you want? Worst contractor that I have ever used! The crew did not tape ceilings or windows; there was an uneven line on all of my ceilings and all of the window sills have paint on them. The carpet on our stairs has paint on every single step. There was damage to our entertainment center and front door. Rich sent one of his crew to re-paint the ceiling in the dining room, but did not re-paint the vaulted ceiling in the other room. Rich refused to come back to fix any of the other problems. He did not complete the job anywhere near to my satisfaction. He demanded full payment with the threat of placing a lien on our house! So unprofessional and such sloppy work. read more

As I've already wasted enough time with this company, I am going to keep this somewhat short. We made the mistake of pre-paying for services with A Brush With Success. We paid for 7 hours of priming and painting of a small bathroom. For some reason unknown to us, the workers skipped the priming and went straight to painting even though we communicated to them that we needed priming and painting and we left the materials in the bathroom for them. Our polite communication with the owner over this quickly went downhill with him blaming my husband and I and then refusing to come look at the room. He also claimed we didn't leave primer for his crew. We assured him we left all of the necessary materials. I have never dealt with such terrible customer service as I just did with the Owner, Rich. Good luck to you in hiring this company. I hope for you nothing goes wrong or you will be left like us, having wasted your money and having to do the project over again. This is only the second time I have written a bad review for a company but this is 100% well deserved. read more

Over before it ever got started. We called A Brush with Success to get an estimate for painting the exterior of our home. Four days later and without any notice, the owner showed up at the door to do the estimate. Four days after that, we received the estimate via E-mail. We liked the bid amount and wanted to move forward. We called and had to leave a message. We didn't hear anything back from the company for several days and made a another call to them. The owner told us that he had us scheduled in his computer and would begin the work one day that following week. We waited until the middle of that next week and then called again. The owner was sure that our house had already been painted by his company. I couldn't believe it when I heard that statement. It turns out that he had us mixed up with some other address and some other person's name. He said that he was sorry and promised to call us the next day to schedule the work. After two or three more days passed without hearing a word, we called him yet again and cancelled the job. This experience was the biggest customer service joke that I have ever been involved with. I decided to look up this company on the internet and read some of the reviews. I have no doubt that every word written in the negative reviews is true. It sounds like this guy is just a middle man who does bids and then subs the work out to whoever he can get to do it. Some of the lucky customers get a decent painting crew by chance and I can see why that would generate a few positive reviews as well. All I can say is "Buyer Beware". read more
