Headed out to A & S Metals around 3:05 on a Tuesday afternoon and arrived by 3:20. I took a slight detour initially missing the turn and drove into the wrong side of the lot where all the green waste trucks were. There is a small lot on the opposite side of the 'do not enter' sign (if you're on Ohlone you've gone too far) and you keep driving in towards the large metal containers which leads to a line of cars. The layout reminded me of going into a car wash or mechanic garage. Just queue up behind the cars (there are 2 different entry points to get helped) and once you drive into the open garage there are people in front of large conveyor belts who will help you unload your items, weigh everything, and fill out a receipt form with the weight of the diff items you've brought in for redemption. Once you have that little paper you can drive through the garage and park in the lot then go back into the office where you receive another receipt with a breakdown of items by weight and amount you will receive for each. I made sure to try and separate my CR-V items beforehand (per the other Yelp review recommendations) to make things easier. I had 4 large garbage bags of crushed aluminum, a box of glass bottles, and a large tote of plastic bottles. I can't speak for other materials but I thought they paid out well, the process was quick and there was only one or two cars ahead of me, and the employees were all very friendly. read more

They will jump to weighing and tossing your copper before even showing the total to you. $1.50 for bright and shiny copper is highway robbery in today's market. Make sure you weigh before you go, and demand to see totals before they start shoving your scrap into the bins. Head over the hill instead or at least call around, going rate in SJ is $5.40 a pound for bright and shiny. Lost me as a customer read more

I enjoy the fact that my grandmother and I can arrive to drop off our recycling, and get cash for them, all whilst she comfortably stays iin the car. I drop the bags that we sorted at home into provided separate barrels , hand them off to a kind worker who quickly lifts the plastic & glass bottles/aluminum onto conveyor belts to happily become reusable products, finally handing me a check to take to the nice ladies at the front. My family and I are able to enjoy the $30 we made together. We have checked out Costco for this service too, which I found to be more convenient initially, but my grandmother insisted on this site, and I can see why now. Grandmother is always right :) I would not go anywhere else to do my recycling, hoping his place remains around forever. read more

Since when is #1 copper less than Aluminum. They quoted one price and gave me have half of that. Recycling has gone down hill. $1.50 for a pound of #1 copper wire is BS specially when they quote you $2.75 to $3.00 a pound..F N scam read more

Their posted closing time is 5pm, yet they close their gate significantly earlier (it was closed at 4:30pm when I arrived today). Not a very good business model. If you post you close at 5pm, then all cars in line should be allowed in. Otherwise, say you close at 4:30pm that way you can finish the cars by 5pm. read more

What a way to waste a day. Spent over an hour in line that went down the street to recycle 2 trashcans worth of CRV materials. Only place in Santa Cruz that still pays for CRV. People were cutting in line and not waiting their turn. Not very helpful once inside. I had to literally block someone to get them to process my 4 cans of separated materials. They then paid about 40% less than what we were accustomed to at RePlanet back when they were still open. Looks like we will be working hard to reduce our use of CRV containers and will donate whatever is left to Grey Bears who will still take the CRV containers, but just wont pay for them. read more

I love this place! I do the recycling for a nearby high school and when Santa Cruz proper closed down its RePlanets, this was the only place I could find that paid (the cash is needed by the school). I was shocked to read the other review about recycling- I have found the wait minimal (weekdays/ mornings), and the system incredible. They are so speedy, polite, and accurate. One DOES have to sort ahead of time, but people should know that by now. I'm a fan. read more

It's a shame to see how downhill this place has gone I have been doing business with them for years with many good experiences but this last one was really a shame. i brought in a roughly 80lb bar of 416 stainless steel and the first 2 people I talked to told me that because a magnet sticks to it that they could only give me $2 for this bar. The owner was on his lunch so I waited around for him to get back because I had dealt with him in the past when I sold a bunch of brass ammo casings and he seemed knowledgeable but yet again he tells the the same thing wants to give me a lousy $2 for a $200+ solid bar of quality stainless steel. I figured as the owner of a metal scrapping business he would know that ALL BUT 2 RARE TYPES OF STAINLESS STEEL ARE MAGNETIC granted less magnetic but still a 2 inch solid bar has a more dense iron content than a stainless fork. Unfortunately no matter what the owner refused to do some research and pay correctly. It's just too bad that someone in this profession would know so little about the materials they are handling and refuse to do a couple seconds of research to keep a customer happy. In the end he did give me slightly more but still not even 15% of what should have been paid for a bar like this was. read more
