Kukui is your standard fake tiki club. Bamboo siding, palm leaves and strong tropical drinks. I have no idea how much the cover cost (nor how much the drinks cost), but my zombie was absolutely fantastic. The bathrooms were clean and the coat check was efficiently run. However, the music was horrible. Everything seemed to be at least 3 years old (except a terrible pop remixed version of Paper Planes which was unrecognizable from the original unless you really put in effort). It was a fun evening, but the good drinks really can't make up for the poor music. Still enjoyable because of the company, but not a great club. Perhaps my opinion would change knowing other Oxford clubs, but I really have no other comparison and thus the review stays at 2 stars.

Firstly, I'd like to say that a long entry queue, overpriced drinks, overcrowding and bathrooms with a medieval level of hygiene are all things that I can deal with- no club is perfect, and undoubtedly at least one of the aforementioned will ail a venue. Kukui was afflicted by all of them, but I could even have happily accepted that if the music had been any good. it wasn't. In fact, before I even get started on the music, let's talk about the sound system. It was incredibly tinny and lo-fi, a fact painfully accentuated by the volume at which it was cranked, ostensibly murdering what were the few danceable tracks of the night. The music itself was mixed confusingly badly. The DJ kept sampling songs as if to segway into them, only to then revert back to playing about a minute or more of generic "filler" beat. It was like sticking the tip in and then pulling out to beat off with a fist full of gravel and hot marmalade instead. There was also practically no discernible bassline in anything, but whether this was due to the DJ's incompetence or the fact that the speakers could have been borrowed from a school disco circa 1996 escapes me at this point. I'm a firm believer in not knocking anything until I've tried it, but I knocked Kukui and I really hope it doesn't try to get back up again.

Its not too big on the inside as it can get pretty crowded, usally combined with an intense heat and sweaty people. Therefore I prefer to spend my night elsewhere, but ofcourse, I know lots whod love the place. Once been there when Jordan (aka Katie Price) came to visit, and made a group of guys strip in front of the audience. Lots of fun! Although, as you can understand, most of the crowd where guys..only having eye for Jordan, waiting for her to show off her bodyparts, instead of the naked guys on stage...

DJ's are hit and miss and the place isn't huge compared to the Bridge or Park End, but it's fun and has a god atmosphere. Monday nights at OFS is 'Flirt', a gay night. So if you are not of that persuasion head over to one of the other student nights!

I emailed management following the experience where they offered us some free drinks if we came back (obviously to get us in to spend more) when I politely thanked the manager for his offer but stated that I didn't live near Oxford so I wouldn't be returning, and just requested that we might receive a partial refund for the poor experience, he of course saw nothing in it for them and no reason to communicate with me any further... side from my experience the place was over crowded, smelly, the drinks were over priced and the Prosecco we ordered literally tasted like bitter cider. Lot's of pashmina scarves, dyed blonde hair and talk of summering in Tuscany. The bouncers here are hard work and the drinks are overpriced for what it is. On a positive note - "Panic" the uni indie music society meet here, so it can be good for gigs/music.

It is in a great location too - in the Conservation Area of the Plain. Perfect for ending a night out on the Cowley Road. A plethora of locals keep the bar going and run the Social Club. The bar is probably the cheapest on the Cowley Road. Thursday evening hosts the very entertaining and extremely popular Catweazle Club - it's more theatre, poetry and song, than open mic (open mic just doesn't do it justice!). Friday night fortnightly there is Mishmash where local dj's encourage you bring some tunes and get on down on the dance floor. In the other room, numerous activites such as martial arts and dance take place, as well as community events and is available for private hire. Check the place out - it is constantly facing closure and needs members and support. Support it before it becomes a McDonalds or Costa Coffee!

Anuba is a branch of the infamous Bridge night club and serves as a taster for a night out…read more Fortunately, its connection to the Bridge ends there, so don't be put off the club itself if you dislike this place. And dislike it you probably will. The best thing about it is its sofas. Hardly a great warm-up for a night on the dancefloor, but it's pretty obvious that this bar serves mainly as a place to get clubbers drunk so they'll spend lots of money in the club itself. It's also the overflow for the queue, so on busy nights lots of disgruntled students are bundled in and have to wait for their number to be called before being allowed in to the club. This makes the atmosphere in this state of limbo a bit tense, as most people don't want to be there. The drinks are typical Oxford prices, so not particularly cheap, but there's a Happy Hour from 6.30-9.30 daily, which eases the pain a bit. The cocktails are a nice change, but watch out for getting a glass half full of ice on most drinks. The music is typical club music; well, typical Oxford club music, so mainly chart music, popular dance and R'n'B. It's very loud, which is great in the Bridge itself, but not so much if you're just after a drink with friends, as you can't really hear someone standing right next to you. I'd give this place a miss and go to somewhere with more character to give your night out a kick-start. Chances are, you'll end up here anyway if the queue's long enough.

This is good when you just want to have a drink and maybe dance few songs after 1am when all the bars are closed. Personaly, the best thing about Anuba is the Latino Wednesdays, for £3 pounds you can enjoy about 3 hours of salsa an bachata music which even though is not the best salsa music still does the job and if you are into dancing you will meet a lot of good dancers and very healthy atmosphere, until 11.30pm or so when Bridge customers start to arrive for the first few drinks here before the move on to the club getting it a bit too crowded sometimes with people that is not dancing.
