What makes a gym great? I've belonged to numerous dojos and fighting gyms over the years so by now I have a good idea, and I joined almost a year ago so I've had some time to consider this. When the leaders are solid adults, secure in their martial skills and accomplishments and happy to be there every day, and when the culture is friendly and supportive, you have the makings of a great gym. At 914, the classes are fun and challenging and the self-defense instruction is excellent. On offer is Krav Maga, Muay Thai -- both of which are known to be the apex of skill sets, with techniques that really work -- some ground work, and optional sparring. If you want to spar, you'll find your level, and it will be safe. The gym welcomes all ages which as an older guy is a real benefit; there are lots of younger people here too. Best instructors and best group of gym mates anyone could hope for. To a person, the people at the gym are supportive and encouraging. The instructors know their stuff and push you to be your best while keeping an upbeat, friendly atmosphere. On the mat, gym mates push you hard while keeping it at your level. I am 50 years old and a relative newcomer. I'll roll with a 25 year old with many years of experience, and he'll work me hard without breaking anything. They run a great kids program too. Combat sports are not for everyone. But if you are remotely considering it, 914 Training is a great place to go. read more

I rely on Yelp for absolutely everything. I had always seen people say things like "I never write reviews, but i had to with this place". I always thought they were exaggerating. How good can some place really be?? Well ladies and gentlemen, It is my turn now!! 914 Training Center is by far the best place that I have ever trained. YES, you read that right!! THE BEST PLACE. I moved around alot throughout NY and everywhere I go, I try and find somewhere where it will challenge me and allow me to grow. Well this place wins!! Everyone at this place is absolutely amazing. All of the coaches are great. They are patient, understand and fun. If you can't have fun while you learn, it's not worth doing in my opinion. Gregg and Marty are so welcoming. From the moment we walked in, my son Paulie and I felt comfortable, like meeting up with old friends. Gregg has a wonderful way with children, he is patient and kind. I look forward to the future and all my son has to gain from his lessons here. Really great instruction from people who are passionate, professional, and dedicated to what they do. This is a gym for all people no matter your athletic ability, age, weight, race, or experience level. (No gymtimidation, just friendly and fun people.) I hate when instructors give robotic, instruction book kind of direction. Greg and Adam know how to really engage everyone in the class and work you to the best of your ability without being either too lenient and not motivating enough or too overpowering and demanding with their instruction. These are not your averages instructors-- these guys are the real deal. As for taking classes and membership, you can pay by class which is really great for me (I'm in grad school, working 2 jobs, and interning) or sign up for membership and take however many classes you want and whenever. Had to leave Steve Sohn's and will NEVER be returning there. Their instruction was so generic and really not helpful. I'm about 107 pounds and have learned to get out of actual dangerous situations and strike effectively thanks to 914 Training Center. There's a really huge difference between just telling someone what to do and really demonstrating in depth. Steve Sohn's doesn't quite get that plus their membership is a HOT AF MESS. Do not go there for Krav Maga, you will just leave annoyed AF not having learned anything. Definitely looking to sign up for membership once I have more time for training. This is a good place to really train and do what's best for you whether you want to stay in shape, learn self defense, or fight competitively. P.S. there's a really cute doggy! read more

I've never had more fun or motivation when working out. They offer a wide variety of classes - my favorite are the bag class, Krav Maga, and the 6 Week Bootcamp Challenges. The atmosphere that trainers Greg and Adam promote is fun, challenging, encouraging, and has absolutely helped me crush my fitness goals over the last year and a half. I've recommended this place to so many friends and family and will continue to do so. My nephews love the kid's classes too! read more

These guys are Awesome. Two of our girls, ages 6 and 8 are going to the Jiu Jitsu classes there and love it. Dan, who is the lower belts sensei is an amazing guy who is great with kids and very warm and professional. The guy in charge, Greg, is a real pro. He knows his art and not even once I got the feeling that money is what drives him. Such a pleasure to work with these guys. We even celebrated our Younger daughter's sixth birthday there and it was a huge success, all kids and parents enjoyed it and the fun atmosphere. This is hands down the best place to be if you're looking to workout, make new friends, all while learning new things ! They have a variety of classes for you to choose from all at convenient hours that can fit your schedule. They're very clean and take care of the equipment !
