The bakery and coffee area are towards the back of the store as you first walk in. The lounge is to your left, and the cooler cases and snacks are to your right. The restroom facilities are in a hallway just past the checkout counter. It's a spacious layout. It truly was nice to have a recognizable brand so close to this historical park. I arrived in the area shortly before an event was to happen that I just so happened to be attending. I wanted to prepare myself as I could feel I was going to be dehydrated. I am so happy I did this as we were standing in the sun for so very long that I felt I was going to melt. I ran inside, went straight to the cooler section and grabbed myself two waters. I saw I had the option to use self checkout, but was closer to the traditional register. I decided to go the traditional route, but should have opted for the self checkout. No fault to the company, it was the customer in front of me that had no concern for other customers. It took longer than it would have if I went to the self checkouts. Paid, I nearly guzzled the first water. I was happy to see this so close to the nearby sites, if I needed anything else, I knew I would stop back here before leaving.

It's good for dry/packaged goods, but I wouldn't trust any fresh items there including milk, eggs, meat. I was in there this past weekend to get a small bottle of milk and noticed the sell by date of all the bottles was past due. I told them about it and suggested they take them off shelf. I bought a liter instead that had a sell by date of about 4 days later. I went home to use it, and it smelled sour, like cheese. I went back to return it, and noticed they hadn't taken down the expired milk. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting they would. They didn't seem to be concerned about it. I'm not sure if it was a language barrier or not, because they didn't seem to be fluent in English. I don't think the cashier knew much English at all. They seemed fairly pleasant about the situation, and did give me my money back after I requested it. All in all, just be careful about what you're buying from there, especially fresh foods.

I came to Riverwards in Old City Philadelphia and ordered a banana tahini smoothie. I was excited…read moreto try this place after seeing it all over TikTok, and wanted to experience the hype. I get to the counter and pulled answers out of the girl at the counter when I inquired about the smoothie. I didn't think anything of her behavior and ordered anyway, until I noticed how different I was treated from the other customers in the store-- white people. Being born and raised in an inclusive city like Philadelphia, I was shocked, but not surprised by the behavior I experienced. Seemingly, those that ordered their smoothies ahead of me were greeted politely, whereas it felt like an inconvenience for me to be in the store, as a black woman. I had already paid for the drink and waited around for it, I waited a while, which was fine... I took time to walk around the store, and look around. The store itself is beautiful. The drink orders were called out loud, and I had been waiting for mine to be called. After about ten minutes, I went to retrieve my drink that had been sitting on the counter. The woman at the counter gestured to my drink, but didn't acknowledge me, and again, made me feel like an inconvenience. I left the store uncomfortable, and still drank the smoothie. I made a video on this matter and two days later, on Monday, the manager at this location reached out to me after there were several comments on their social media about what happened. Likewise, a few other staff who worked at the smoothie counter reached out and have been supportive and sweet. From the manager, Robert, I was promised compensation from Riverwards for this experience and the manager was extremely apologetic. I did not care about the compensation, I just wanted to be heard and understood about the issue of racism that happened. During our conversation, I let the manager know about more comments that I have seen online concerning the same problem with their team and how they treat people of color in their establishment. It's been almost a month, I have filed a complaint with my credit card company to dispute the charge... I have not received the promised compensation, either. I believe that I was promised that as "hush money" to prevent me from speaking my truth. The store is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but why the racism? I went for the experience of saying that I've finally tried Riverwards, but never again. There are other beautiful places in Philly to try, that don't come with a side of disrespect.
