On the other hand, poor service won't ruin a delicious meal, but it will make you reconsider going back to an average fish & chip shop. They were nice chips, but there are plenty of places I can get nice chips and not be ignored, snapped at, or have my questions answered by someone just pointing at the sign above his head. It's just ... I understand that you might be having a bad day, and that's fine. Likewise if your English is poor and that limits your conversational ability, I get that. But I'm sorry - neither of those justify being a dick. Oh, and my girlfriend said the milkshake she got was good-to-average, so that won't save them.

Luckily I found this place when I worked nearby and would often pop in to grab fillets for dinner. Now I make a special trip because like I said, this kind of place is RARE AS, as my son would say. The owners are absolutely lovely and you get that warm community feel of a proper local fishmonger who greets you with a smile on arrival and wishes you a good day when you leave. They also often tuck in a lemon for me and it's those little things that make all the difference. The fish is fresh as can be and not priced at the rip-off rates of some other places I could mention. It's really important to support these small but perfectly formed businesses so give it a go next time you are going to treat yourself (because let's face it, fish is never going to be the cheap staple it should be) to a fish dinner, come here.

And per Google reviews, on busy nights like Friday or Saturday, you should call ahead or be willing to wait. In fact, it was very crispy and light and wasn't in excess. The fries were crispy and salty and way too plentiful. Other reviewers on Google loved the potato thing, but I could have done without. The place is a little dumpy but apparently the locals love them. I hear the Chinese portions are just as big and just as tasty. It's a bit from the main drive in town but well worth it! AJ's earns extra points for being an important Auckland landmark. Need to know where Owairaka Ave meets Mt. Albert Road? Well actually you already do, even if you didn't realise that was what those two roads were called.
