Northern Quarter

I have a sore head. It's not good but it's the price you pay for a great night out. Ruby Lounge…read moretotally exceeded expectations. Me, planning, making a decision is a rare thing. My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off, being £1 entry, sold it for me. Doubles for £3, a range of sambucas £1.50? Messy. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. Another great Northern Quarter location that needs to become a regular thing for me.

I think this might be a strip club. In fact I'm pretty sure. Well, it wasn't when I was in the Ruby…read moreLounge last night for a Lost and Found gig which is why I felt comfortable to take my boyf in with me. The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

You cannot be serious man. No it isn't Wimbledon season or a time machine malfunction. I can't…read morebelieve it has taken me so long to find the Viper Rooms. I'm only as perturbed as I am under the illusion that finding a place that was once owned by Johnny Depp means I'm now married to him. Okay, so this particular Viper Rooms wasn't owned by Johnny Depp but it shares the same name. That is close enough for me. Now will it live up to expectations? Well actually yes it does. It's housed in a Grade II listed building and inside they've spared little expense. We're talking four bars surrounded by multiple rooms and a mad mix up of music as well. You'll get anything from disco to Hip Hop. It is beautiful, it really is. A special mention goes out the centre piece chandelier and quite awesome (not to mention comfortable) leather sofas throughout. To get you in the mood and your disco shoes raring the drinks menu will blow you away. It beats some clubs I've been to with a huge selection of cocktails, wines, fizz and beer. This is grade A stuff. It may be a little mainstream for some people's tastes but just go with the flow and enjoy the venue if nothing else.

It's ok as clubs go but had 3 permanent cocktail and drinks menus on the wall but didn't have any…read moremilk to make several of the cocktails!! Milk for heavens sake- not exactly difficult to come by is it?! Also Jägerbombs and several other drinks similar were advertised but they didn't have any shot glasses..in a club.. It all unfortunately shows a couldn't care less attitude on the part of the management.

Fallowfield

I love Baa Bar if nothing more than for it's name. (Tell me it isn't fun saying Baaaaaah Bar after…read morea couple drinks!) The place is lovely inside and really a step up from its surroundings. Drinks are fun and imaginative, and it's not terribly expensive. The place can get packed pretty quickly as it's tiny and the area is obviously packed with students stalking alcohol like it's key to their surviving the next 10 minutes -- which, granted, for many it probably is.

Here's another Fallowfield institution. A structure made of glass and steel, it used to be called…read moreGlass (why they didn't call it Glass and Steel I have no idea, it's such a catchy name... sense the sarcastic tone), and this three floored venue has had a huge refit and gained popularity as a result. It's one of those 'meh' places, perhaps not 'meh' enough to warrant a harsh two stars as it has a superb outside balcony feature for those sun-drenched afternoons and Smoky Joes. Plus the drinks are cheap. Of course they are, it's a Baa Bar. Winner. You'll get the odd club night here but it seems to have entered the collective consciousness as a venue for 'pre-drink drinks'. And hey, they have a place. I bet if we put together a list of pre-drinks drinks places we'd end up with something colossal. The music's not exactly my cup of tea with all that jungle, drum n' bass and underground dance (I'm making myself sound old, I must stop) but if that floats your boat then this place will too. A worthy Fallowfield contender.

The music is generally mediocre, and the atmosphere is dead on most nights nowadays, but is booming on certain nights. Friday Fury and certain live gigs, bring the crowds from the uni, and make it a fun, albeit stuffy place. The no-drinks on the dance floor rule is heavily enforced by burly bouncers, and they are very quick to chuck people out. So that part is never fun. Can be up to £4 to get in, unless you come when the doors are open and the place is empty. Bar service is the slowest in Lancaster, and you can spend forever queuing and being pushed around when trying to order a drink on a busy night. So pick your night carefully, and have fun. Because at least you don't have old balding single guys staring at you all night.

The only salvation of this club is that the staff are pretty fantastic, and the service is quick as well! The 3 stars I give is 100% due to the good quality of the service and has NO relevance to the place itself! And it's owned by Lancaster University Student Union? You'd excpect better from the student union of one of the best unis in the UK! Then again maybe I'm bias because I'm UCUM! (that's University of Cumbria, for those who didn't know).
