606 Records ended up being a great surprise during my stay in Chicago since it was right down the street from my Airbnb. I originally stopped in because it was recommended by Pinwheel Records, and I'm really glad I did. The shop has an incredible selection and the staff was extremely knowledgeable. Drew especially was fantastic to talk with. I asked about local Chicago music and he immediately had great recommendations and insight into the scene. One of the coolest things about the shop is that 606 has its own label, and I was able to pick up a limited release of Balance: A Compilation Without Boundaries -- featuring artists with parallels to the city of Chicago, experimenting sonically & balanced with music.  You can tell this place genuinely cares about music discovery and supporting artists. Definitely worth a stop if you're digging around Chicago for records beyond the usual mainstream finds. I was traveling and like Pinwheel, 606 was also able to ship my purchases home for me. 606 Records has been in the Pilsen 'hood since '15, and they offer new and used vinyl of various genres and artists that are independent, local, and global. The store itself is well-organized, clean, and has a pleasant vibe to it; there are listening stations situated throughout the store, as well as a community board featuring local events. Decent selection. The records and covers are graded accurately and I found a number of great bargains including some classic R&B, Billy Preston and The Stylistics. Also, the Pilsen area is great for Mexican food and thrift shops. read more

Great shop. I was in from out of town, got a rec to check it out, was very glad to make the walk. Found some solid selections for good prices, learned about new releases and labels and artists I didn't know of, picked up some great stuff. It's taken me far too long to get over here, the last time I tried to go was before a show at Thalia Hall and it was already closed, but they stay open until 9 on weekends which is nice. 606 is great! They specialize in funky stuff, world, soul, jazz, electronic, and more. I spent an hour just going through the electronic section and found a few gems. Deep selection of the aforementioned genres, lots of the stuff I saw was brand new in mint condition. They have used stuff too though. Cool mural of sound waves on the wall by local artist hero Cody Hudson. Service was friendly and helpful, and they don't follow you around. Needles available at the counter for the listening stations, which were immaculate. There was a dj booth behind the counter where a guy was mixing some interesting Brazilian music. To the guy faulting 606 for not carrying *everything*, records take up a lot of physical space, and this shop is small. You can't be a small shop with stacks to the ceiling. 606 does a great job of curating, and does carry a lot of vinyl plus a sizable stockroom in back. The vinyl game is about niche specialization nowadays, you go to a specific shop for a deep specific selection. For me this is the #1 shop in Pilsen, and south side in general. As folks may know, I have rated most of the record stores in Chicagoland at this point (suburban or otherwise) and now have about 60 reviews done. I haven't done 606 yet, so here goes. Below are my general comments. To see how 606 stacks up overall to other stores in the area, see it's relative rankings in my various lists... Like Permanent Records or Saki, this store is pretty good at carrying LPs in specific genres the owner(s) have decided to focus on carrying. As others have pointed out here already, they do a really nice job with selections in those areas. However, they lack the focus on the kind of broad range of genres other places in Chicago have that I've placed higher in reviews (e.g., Reckless, Dave's, Dusty Groove, and Record Breakers, as well as Oak Park Records in the suburbs)--so they've also gotten a similar rating from me to a place like Saki--that is, a rating of a 4 rather than a 5. read more

Chicago is my 2nd city without a doubt and I have been to a lot of stores in the area. Of all the stores this new store is my favorite. I have a break down of how I rate a store and this is what it is: 1. Mark Up and Cost of Records 2. Quality of Records and Assortment 3. Lay Out and Organization 4. Displays or Store Recommendations 5. Staff Interactions This store knocks it out of the park which these and gets a 5 in all of them. The cost of the records are on point. I ended up getting a lot of really good records at a decent price. Now some of them at first were a little marked up because of them just opening the store but there were some gems that definitely were of value. I also noticed that although a couple were a higher rate it still was amazing to get because the quality of the record itself was crisp. Although you may be able to obtain it for less funds you're better off getting it at this shop. They had a bunch of really awesome picks and I ended up getting a Rocky album and Jack Johnson. That Jack Johnson is very expensive and their store had it at a very very fair price. The lay out and organization was by far my favorite. I am the person that likes everything lined up, clean, and organized and they provide that. It's so darn easy to find things there. I don't have that instant panic attack upon getting into a store because you have no idea where to begin. It's easy start anywhere grab and go. Such a beautiful store to walk into. It's fresh, clean, and crisp. Sometimes vinyl collectors get a bad rep for being hoarders and this store kicks that stereotype. They didn't have any specific recommendations wall when I arrived but the staff is so awesome you can ask them anything. I started talking to them months ago about how I wanted to DJ on vinyl and they helped me by recommending equipment to buy at home. They will provide you with any information about records and vinyl you can think of. I had a pretty deep conversation about how the value or records makes more sense verse a MP3 and it just moved on from there. I can't wait to go back to their store and would highly encourage all vinyl lovers and Chicagoans to check it out. Since Chicago is my 2nd city and I've seen it all I can easily say this is my favorite 312 vinyl shop. read more

I attended the 606 Records grand opening. It was packed! Both ladies AND gentlemen love this place. Back when I was 6, I had a record player. I kept it until I was 12, and played a bunch of Lynrd Skynrd albums on it. If you want a Lynrd Skynrd album, they will have it. If you want a Chuck Mangione record, they will have that too. If Herb Alpert is your speed- its there. The selection is unique and unlike any other record store I've visited. Another thing that is cool is that its located right across from a restaurant called "Do Sex." So in summary: Go get a record. Then take your girl to Do Sex. read more

Listen, I'm not the coolest person on the block. But shopping at 606 Records made me feeeeeel like I was. After grabbing dinner with my husband at Dusek's across the street-- on the first floor of Thalia Hall-- we headed over right across the street to hit 606's opening party. Um, can you say line out the door? The decor is inviting, and the merchandise is even more so. Indie rock? Yep. Hip hop? Duh, of course. Show tunes? June is busting out all over. And my husband even got his hot little hands on The Times' 'Ice Cream Castle' for super-cheap, so overall, it was a major win. This place is ready to take over the neighborhood *and* my turntables. And the iPads they have set up as cash registers reminds me that even if I never, ever learn how to use a tablet, I've always got my wax collection to keep my cozy at night. Quiet space, came and left with what I was seeking. Cashier went over and above to accommodate my experience even after leaving the store (thanks for allowing me to duct tape my paper bag after purchasing a record!! Came here about a month after opening, as I'm an avid vinyl fan and I live just a few minutes walking from 606! Although it is a smaller shop, I was very pleased with both the great selection and the friendly staff. The clerk who rang me up also gave me a complimentary tote bag when I checked out and I'm still putting it to good use. I will definitely be returning and am so glad I now have a great record store within walking distance of me! read more

These guys go hard! Slightly hung I stumbled in to this unique record shop on my way to Thalia Hall. The uncluttered, visually stunning, inviting atmosphere pulled me in and the amazing music kept me there until I almost missed the show. The guys were beyond approachable and in fact very personable. Even turned me on to a few awesome labels. I left with an armful including the ridiculously infectious Bok Bok 'Your Charizmatic Self'. But they also didn't scoff when I also picked up a few used guilty pleasures like the Repo Man Soundtrack and Mickey Newbury. I plan to keep coming regularly. read more
