The Purple Heather was once referred to as a "Gastro Pub". However ever since a change of owners and staff, they are going forward as simply a pub. Their vision "is to move forward and grow with the local community in North Burlington through quality, care and a passion for customer service."
I will commend them for their service as our server, Kirsten was oustanding. As good as she was though, the food was a complete let-down. My wife and I were looking for a simple yet delicious meal and we remembered The Purple Heather "Gastro" Pub. How could we go wrong with an establishment claiming to be a gastro pub? Once we arrived though we found out they were no longer claiming to be a culinary establishment of higher quality.
We ordered some very common pub food, a pulled pork sandwich and a side of poutine for my wife. For myself I had the "Pub Platter", a sampling of appetizers including mozzarella sticks, deep fried calamari, frites heather and chicken wings (Honey sriracha sauce, dusted). We also had some drinks, one of which was the Keith's Cider. The first clue that something was quite right was the cider. It was served in a Keith's branded pint glass as most of their products are. The strange thing was the cubed ice floating in it. I've never been served a pint of cider with ice in it before. It was strange but I didn't make a fuss, maybe their keg was just hooked up and hadn't had a chance to really chill.
When the food arrived, it looked a little sad and felt a little cold. My wife's poutine was soggy and the cheese curds had already started to re-harden. My pub platter looked fine but was on the cold side of things as well. Maybe the orders had sat in the window for too long. Biting into the mozzarella stick revealed a slightly chewy but very "comfortable" temperature of cheese, not the usual burning lava you find with fresh out of the fryer sticks. This was odd. The biggest surprise was the chicken wings and calamari. Both tasted off, the chicken wings had a very pungent smell of ammonia. The calamari tasted dried out and exceptionally fishy. At first I thought maybe I had mixed my bites and the calamari was contaminating the chicken wings. By the 2nd wing I was thoroughly convinced there was something wrong but kept eating for not wanting to waste food. The third wing was what broke the camel's stomach. It reeked of ammonia and what I can only describe as something akin to urine, turning my stomach instantly. I informed our server, Kirsten and returned the wings. I did not want any compensation nor any substitute as I was no longer hungry. Mostly I wanted to inform the BoH of the issue with the chicken. Kirsten did take the remaining wings (4) to the back and when she returned she noted no one but her noticed anything wrong. To which she said she detected a scent or smell to the wings.
It is my opinion the refrigeration is not adequate in that:
- Ice needed to be added to the pint of cider
- The calamari was taking on a left out and decomposing taste
- The chicken wings definitely had gone bad with a pungent odour of ammonia emanating from them.
I hope this is not the case as many patrons could potentially become quite ill. They are trying very hard to be the social drinking spot for the neighborhood but the food is well under par. read more
