Kachemak Bay State Park - From here it's only 1/2 a mile more to arrive at Glacier Lake and Grewingk Glacier.

What an amazing park! It takes a lot of logistics to get here and plan a trip, but it's definitely…read moreworth it. HIKE 1: Saddle Trail to Glacier Lake Trail, packraft paddle across to Blue Ice Trail to a campsite on a bluff overlooking Grewingk Glacier: 6.06mi, 2hr 45min of moving time (overall took 8hr 5min), 849ft - Saddle Trail had the most elevation gain - Glacier Lake Trail was open and flat, probably the easiest and most pleasant - Blue Ice Trail was flat but a little more overgrown and full of mosquitos at the end of June. Camping in the area is a little hard; you're either surrounded by mosquitos or hit with a ton of wind that's been building off the glacier. We camped in a high rocky area and were able to find 7-8 tent spots; most of us had to build wind walls to protect our tents and use rocks to keep our stakes in place. We did encounter a black bear near our campsites and were glad to have bear spray handy. Grewingk Glacier ends on these very steep ice walls; we rafted up to them and estimated them to be about 50 ft. A couple people in our group watching some pieces calving! It happened a couple times in our one day in the area. HIKE 2: Later on we took the Blue Ice Trail back and went up the Emerald Lake Loop Trail to Emerald Lake. That 2.3 mile section has some extreme elevation gain and is extremely overgrown. It look us about an hour to just to half a mile. You're constantly crawling under and over trees, surrounded by mosquitos, and avoiding being stabbed by Devil's Club. 4.14mi, 2:20 moving time (overall took 4hr 22min), 1,159ft elevation (this must be the difference; we definitely climbed a good 2,000-3,000ft on the Emerald Lake Loop Trail). Emerald Lake was beautiful, has a nice little pebbly beach and was windy so there weren't mosquitos. We got a prop plane to fly us from Emerald Lake to the Wosnesenski Glacier, which has some easy flat camping in the area, with trees to block the wind. Be wary of low ground; we had to move 2 of our tents at midnight after just a little bit of rain because it was getting swampy where our tents were! There's some rock climbing nearby. The glacier ends gradually into the water with no dramatic ice walls like the Grewingk, but it is still a beautiful site, and the cliffs to the right of it have about 8 different waterfalls coming down. We packrafted down the Wosnesenski River; it was easy to moderate, but there was one section that wiped out four of us with a very strong eddy and a sharp corner. Be aware of shallow waters and trees in the river. We did see 4 eagles along the way!

Truly a beautiful place to visit. We came in and went out on a water taxi. Enjoyed hiking the…read moreGrewingk Glacier trail too

The name of the boat is perfect: she is a lady from stem to stern: lots of wood and space, all maintained beautifully. Though the boat only has three guest quarters, our room was comfortable and quiet, and we appreciated having a private shower. And the crew: Captain Rand fostered complete confidence in his seamanship. It was obvious he had grown up in Kachemak Bay. Both Rand and his assistant captain Mike showed their background as schoolteachers, always ready to tell us about what we were seeing without ever being intrusive. The food was magnificent as well. One night Rand's wife Lauren, a former culinary teacher, cooked and the other night a chef who Rand had taught in school cooked. Both prepared inventive and well-executed dishes. And Mike made sure we all had plenty of snacks on our excursions! We hiked and kayaked from the boat and that was well organized and we enjoyed the outings very much. We hiked to a glacial lake, and kayaked around small islands, and ate lunch on the beach. We also saw a lot of terrific sea life throughout the trip - a humpback whale that breached twice! Seals, sea lions, sea otters, eagles, puffins, and more! We would highly recommend a booking on Lady of the Sea!

The tides of Kachemak Bay can reach 25 foot, though salt water fills the slough only when the tide rises above 18 feet. The bay is rimmed with Active volcanoes. The trail starts at Bishop's Beach parking area and goes 0.6-miles to the Alaska Islands and Oceans Visitor Center. The scenery transitions from the gray gravel and sand of Bishop's Beach through a grassy meadow of sedges and succulent plants. Then you ascend a hillside to pass through a spruce forest and finally reach the Alaska Islands and Oceans Visitor Center Visitor's Center. It is interesting to check out the Visitor Center to learn about the plants and birds here, and then go directly out and see them! Lots of plants and some trees on this walk. Also birds, birds, birds. Many of the birds are migrating shorebirds and waterfowl. You might see Canadian Geese, nesting cranes, swans, merlins, wigeons, swallows, sandpipers and others. You have a good chance of seeing a bald eagle or two flying around, or just hanging out in the trees near the Visitors Center. The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival takes place here in May during peak migration. You can also start this walk at the Visitor's Center, of course, because it has its own parking area. It's located at 95 Sterling Highway in Homer. The trail is now a galvanized-steel grate deck (ADA accessible) to protect the wetland area.
