I was forced to find a new psychiatrist after she refused to prescribe a 90-day supply of a medication I had been safely taking for over a decade. My insurance would not cover the 30-day supply she insisted on prescribing, leaving me with significant out-of-pocket costs and forcing me to seek care elsewhere. This was not a minor inconvenience. It jeopardized my ability to afford and maintain access to medication essential to my well-being. Then came the $125 cancellation fee. I mistakenly believed I had canceled an appointment and contacted her merely minutes after the 24 hour deadline to explain the mistake and ask ask for a waiver. I was transparent about my financial hardship and made a genuine effort to resolve the situation professionally. Her response showed absolutely no flexibility, no meaningful consideration, and a series of defensive messages culminating in her declaring the matter closed. Moreover, she failed to formally cancel the appointment, and left me to show up to find she wasn't there. I was still charged. it is clear that for Ms. Danforth, rigidly enforcing policies matters more than considering the actual circumstances of the patient on the other end of the conversation. I acknowledged my mistake. I asked for a reasonable exception. I was met with a cold, dismissive response. The lack of empathy, accountability, and basic professional courtesy was appalling. At no point did I feel that my well-being or circumstances mattered. Patients deserve a provider who takes their concerns seriously, communicates respectfully, and understands the real-world consequences of their decisions. Instead, Ms. Danforth's dismissive communication and cold approach left me feeling medically and financially vulnerable. Although I was under her care for only a matter of weeks, that was more than enough time to see a deeply troubling disregard for the people behind the prescriptions. Patients are human beings who deserve compassion and respect, not treatment that makes them feel like an inconvenience or transaction.
