It is easier to describe Robyn through metaphor than similes, because rather than Robyn being like…read moresomething, she is so many wonderful things:
She is a warm blanket on a cold day.
Robyn is that delicious dinner recipe that brings back childhood memories of your mother cooking for you on a special day.
Robyn is that satisfactory bite of chocolate cake.
Robyn is that last lick of energy to help you finish the race.
When you're feeling weak and insecure, Robyn is the boost of confidence you need.
Robyn is google maps when you're lost and confused, always bringing you home to safety.
As you read this, you should know that I am entirely biased. Robyn has been my dearest and best friend since high school, having met at the good ol' age of 15. We spent countless hours together, in the band room, at lunch, afterschool band rehearsals, sleepovers (I nearly lived with her), and weekend competitions. Just last year, she was part of the biggest day of my life-- my wedding. So when she told me that she was venturing out to work in the world of childbirth, I knew she would be by my side as she always had. My personal bias cannot diminish just how flawless and selfless this woman is; and, having known her for more than ten years, I can easily say that she has always been this way.
When I got pregnant, it was no surprise. After Robyn referred me to the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Tony Weshler, we both knew it wouldn't be too long before I would break the big news.
From marriage, to conception, through pregnancy, to childbirth, to postpartum, Robyn has been at my side every step of the journey.
During every step she provided me with ample resources. Although I live out of state, Robyn still referred me to pregnancy businesses and classes-- with addresses, dates, times and links-- for my surrounding area. I read it all and nearly signed up for everything. She wanted me to be as well prepared as possible, and so did I. If she wanted me to read a book, I read it. If she wanted me to start going to a chiropractor or acupuncture, I would, without question. She is the expert and her knowledge was truly a gift.
You see, I was planning on a natural birth. However, my little angel was comfortable and did not want to turn down, so she remained breech during the entire pregnancy. Again, Robyn flooded me with information on how to encourage the baby to turn head down. Trust me, I read it all and tried it all, but our sweetie chose to do her own thing. So a week and a half before, we were told to schedule a cesarean. Not ideal, and not at all what I had planned, but Robyn reassured me that this too can be natural, and that she would be with me every step of the time.
We remained positive, despite being terrified at not having nine months to mentally prepare myself for this new route of delivery, but we did what we could and continued on.
Robyn was such a help, I didn't even doubt it. She flew in the night before, and her positivity shined a light down this dark and unknown tunnel.
The day came, and it was so easy. The process was quick: I got my baby in moments. I had very little pain, healed quickly, and then we were home. To this day I joke about how I could have a C-section every day. It really was that easy.
I came home to a clean house, flowers arranged everywhere, and open arms to assist in any way. She cooked for us, cleaned for us, massaged me when I was tired and sore. She was our night nanny and took care of the baby while I slept, and woke me only to nurse and would burp and change her so I could go back to sleep.
Honestly, I experienced no depression as many do after childbirth, and I am a firm believer that was because of Miss Comfort. She set the tone so that after she left, my mother and husband would continue on, as if she had never left, making every transition as smooth as possible.
I love Robyn, and am so eternally grateful for her-- obviously for our friendship, but also for always being there when I need her.
We will be trying to conceive rather soon, so I can promise you this: she will be with me every step of the way, as well as with our future babies.
To have Robyn by your side during this precious and delicate time is an honor, and I encourage anyone looking for some Comfort at their side during childbirth that Robyn would be the best decision that they could make.
