Solely designed for women, Curves is tailored to you thus helping you loose weight by offering the curves circuit. This specific workout is 30 minutes of strength training, cardio and stretching activities, which burns up to 500 calories. Curves is actually the largest fitness franchise in the world and generally a cheaper alternative to most other gyms. Personally it's not my kind of gym, however I believe it is a great option for many others. Located on Unley Road, Curves gym is quite small and not the typical home to a common gym junkie. Do not expect treadmills and weight rooms, however rather a woman friendly environment designed to improve your health and loose weight safely. In the end it is the circuit workout and specific weight monitoring that is the draw card. Not for me, however it could very well be for you.

I'm an official member at another branch but one month after you join you can use any branch WORLDWIDE at any time and that's a sales carrot in itself. I've used about 10 branches around Adelaide, often squeezing in a workout whilst attending to other tasks, and I've even used my pass on a recent QLD trip, utilising Brisbane's city gym right on the waterfront! All the equipment is state of the art, well maintained and rarely out of order for any length of time. Some hold classes, if you stick to a local gym, but all have on-demand TV screen classes for anyone to start/use at any time. All provide Personal Trainers (at a cost) if you require some extra encouragement. They are staffed during business hours and cctv plus being locked in during out of hours gives customers the security. To enter you simply used a security fob (key) but don't ever lose it - a $50 replacement fee is rather hefty. All branches are similar and stick to the same formula and basically only differ in their size, available equipment and customer demographic. New branches are still popping up and are often well advertised - they are the best option to become a member as you'll often get in at a very low rate.

I first came across Pushing Performance and it's owner Simon at an event in Adelaide and was star struck by his enthusiasm, encouragement and passion for tailoring fitness programs to individuals so it was fun whilst getting results. When it came around to convincing my parents to have PT sessions with me (works out to $21pp for 3 people) I was devastated to find out Simon was essentially booked out for eternity and we'd have to use another trainer of his. But Mel is just delightful and god bless that woman with putting up with the 3 of us in training sessions. From my Dad's hip problems to my mother's knees and my neck soreness she manages to find workouts for us every week that get us active and don't injure our tired, old bodies. Even better is that we get to set location and time and Mel brings the equipment to us! If you are looking for an introduction to group fitness sessions, kids training sessions or PT then I'd recommend starting out with Pushing Performance. They tailor to everyone's needs and are incredibly enthusiastic about making Adelaide a happier, healthier place.

It was cardio and the funniest thing was the guy running the session out the front. He was the gayest, hypoest, fluroest most energetic fitness instructors I've ever seen. But he got us all running around, in a good mood and working out. The session was good, and the actual gym is quite nice too. It's kind of a warehouse setup, new looking inside and very open and dark with coloured lights and mirrors. Our session was only $5 but I don't know if that was discounted at all, but in a good location to go to after Magill Uni.

Being a fairly small branch it doesn't have all the same fancy equipment as some of the larger ones, but that also means it is not nearly as overcrowded and the people who come here seem much more like my kind of people; we want to get/stay fit but we're not going over the top about it. That aggressively competitive attitude I have seen in some other gyms seems way more toned down here, so that's cool.

It's sad how much we're disconnected from our physical needs and sad that we need a place like this. But I'm glad I've found them because I'm on the road to better fitness and here and I think I've worked out why they've been able to break through: they LISTEN to me and have gradually coached me in listening to myself. I need to state up front, I don't like exercising nor going to a gym. I don't understand people who…read moretalk about the adrenaline rush that comes with exercise. Whatever gene or part of the brain that creates that sensation is completely absent in me. I want the benefits of exercise without the effort. I have tried other gyms and exercise classes but in the end I have always given up. I didn't discover iNform by chance. It came highly recommended. I started with a "needs assessment". This looked at not only physical areas but psychological ones as well including motivation. A plan was developed, a trainer assigned and a review plan. The trainer was picked as someone who would be a "good fit" for me. The trainers I have had have amended my programme on days I have been down and have helped me address psychological barriers to well-being. They also work collaboratively with a number health professionals that I see. I still don't LOVE exercise but I am progressing physically and mentally thanks to the support of the team at iNform.

Overall the gym has everything you'd expect; treadmills (plenty), bikes, cross trainers, weights rooms, stretching area, exercise balls, etc. The rooms are well air conditioned and there are showers if you need them. The staff are friendly, helpful and encouraging. I took one class doing pump (with my mum) and one class doing pilates (with a friend). The pump class was good and you felt well exercised once you were done. The pilates class was meant to be a beginners class but I felt like I wasn't being taught very well and there were people in the class who were going ahead and knew what they were doing. I was a bit disappointed with that, but in the pump class I felt a bit more looked after. To be fair, I'd much rather do my own thing rather than be in a class, but maybe Brighton can work on their beginners classes for the future. Overall, if I lived closer to Brighton or didn't have a closer gym to me like I do now, I'd probably choose Brighton Fitness.
