I don't patronize this place all that often, once every 1-2 months or so. I appreciate that they usually have at least one beer that I haven't tried before added to the tap list rotation, so they're still willing to experiment and come up with new brews. Bartenders are usually pretty attentive, friendly, personable, and are willing to give you samples to try if you aren't sure which beer to try. Also, the venue is pretty neat, as it's a renovated building in downtown Saint Jo, and they've kept pretty true to its industrial roots with exposed brick, high ceilings, and sealed concert floors. It doesn't hurt that they have an entire side of the building with great big windows to let in natural light. I have two criticisms - 1) it needs a bigger outdoor space. The deck out back is nice but it doesn't have much space to avoid the smokers. 2) I'm a huge fan of sour beers, and RB's brewmasters just haven't put out much in this genre. If they had more of these, I'd probably stop in more often.

I never should have listened to those who are not fans. My husband got 4 twisteds--2 chicken and one of each of the other flavors. They were all so good. And the fresh fried chips were delicious too. I got the fried swai. My husband is not a fan of fish but he kept stealing bites off my plate, it was that good. The batter was light and crisp. And the portion was huge. I LOVED the honey mustard coleslaw. I'm a slaw snob, and I have high standards. I look forward to eating the slaw again. The garlic Parmesan broccoli was good too. We will be back.

All their food is named after musicians. I had the Hank Williams hamburger, with spicy bacon jam, Cheddar cheese, and a couple of fried onion. The burger was delicious, the bacon jam not overly spicy for me but worked well. Great burger. Came with seasoned fries, also quite good. They brew some of their own beer, which both my friends and I thought they still had a little ways to go to perfect that. I had their Irish Stout which wasn't bad. A little more bitter than Guinness but ok. Definitely great food for a bar, and their craft beer will get there soon. Parking is around back.

The first…read moretime one of our members called ahead to be sure they could accommodate a group that runs between 8 and 20 routinely. They were assured that they could. When we arrived, however, there were only 2 staff on duty, a bartender and a cook. Nonetheless, the bartender and I moved tables and got ready for up to 15. 18 arrived, and the barkeep added a table. He indicated more than once that NO ONE had prepared him for us or even mentioned our reservation. Service was slow, as you can imagine, food arrived over a period of 30 minutes, and several of our group were unhappy but I detailed the situation to them and mentioned that it was not the bartender/server's fault. the food was good, in almost everyone's estimation. Obviously the cook knew what HE was doing. I tried to get everyone back in there again for about a year before they all said ok, and we scheduled again, 2 or 3 weeks before our visit. when we arrived it was the same story. I asked to speak to the manager or owner, but neither was there. later, I attempted to find the owner's name to discuss this nicely with them, as I have been in business management since 1974, and understand the demands and that owners would always like to know if things aren't right in their absence. After research, I was told the owner listed in the current, 2023, city directory was gone and a new owner had it. In any case, we polled the group and decided to take our group of 16 elsewhere. I noticed we constituted about a 100% increase in lunch attendance from what I saw, and our tab that day at a similar business exceeded $ 225. That's a lot to lose on inefficient communication! I doubt I can convince that gang to try them again, but I liked the food. Maybe I'll get it from Grubhub next time because this is ridiculous. If you have more than 6 for lunch there, keep moving....

A dive bar does not get more divey than this. A dive in its purest form, not even the most…read morehard-core hipsters would go here trying to be ironic! Pop A Top is located in a remote semi-wooded area in extreme northern St. Joseph, far-removed from any other bars or restaurants. It is part of a tiny cluster of brick buildings surrounded by gravel lots of old or rusting industrial equipment, buses, trucks, and other vehicles. Aging mobile homes making up most of the remainder of the surroundings. It was originally a bank, but was converted to a bar in the 1950s and operated as Family Tavern for about 30 years. Family Tavern closed after the owner died, but later Pop A Top re-opened the space. There's no taps, so we got a couple of cans of beer. Either there was no air conditioning or it wasn't working. A pair of noisy and powerful fans were employed to attempt to ventilate the place. Despite the fans, with it being 100 degrees outside, it took only a few minutes for our beer to warm up to room temperature. :( It was quite a bit darker in there than my pictures (taken with a high exposure setting) let on. There appeared to be a back room that looked big enough for pool tables, but the lights were out and we could not really see for sure without risking tripping over fans. :) I'm going to assume that there was indeed at least one pool table. (Update: A later visit revealed a nice looking back room with a pool table in the center of it.) As rickety and run-down as the building is, the woodwork of the bar itself is beautiful. I started to give this bar 2 stars due to the heat getting my beer warm so fast, but I decided that the weather isn't their fault. Besides, the bartender was pretty nice to us. (Update: It was still hot inside on a second visit in September, but we went in the early evening so it wasn't as bad. The bartender was the same pleasant woman who served us in July. There were a few more customers in there his time.)
