Absolutely loved our stay in Room 4. The room was lovely with 2 balconies right over the river. The mattress was fabulous, which is so important when traveling. The location couldn't be beat and the staff was phenomenal. They were so welcoming and helpful. We could not ask for more. The breakfast was good and who can't resist a free beer? We booked our honeymoon over 7 months ago and coordinated a 'free' hotel shuttle pickup the day before arrival with the River House. We were so excited for our stay. When we pulled up in the shuttle at the River House, we were told there was no room for us and that our only option was another hotel within the same management group, a 40 min walk from the Ribeira District where we wanted to stay. The 'free' hotel shuttle dropped us off at the new location and charged us €25 and the hotel said there was nothing they could do to reimburse. Needless to say, after hours of searching, we finally found an unaffiliated hotel with availability. I can't believe this happened on our honeymoon, it's not exactly romantic to be walking around the streets with suitcases. Don't book unless you want to gamble on your trip. read more

Found this lovely B&B through some reviews on random internet sites and TripAdvisor, and we couldn't have been happier with our 3-night stay. The team provides excellent service all-around: they arranged a free pickup from the airport and were very understanding about our late arrival due to flight delays. They had chocolates and traditional port wine waiting for us in our beautiful room when we arrived. We chose a street-view room to save a few bucks, but it was still lovely -- original stone walls, very comfortable bed and stylish bathroom with all the necessary amenities provided. The living/dining room on the lower floor has fabulous views of the river and all the accompanying tourism. We especially appreciated that although breakfast starts at 8, it's available pretty much indefinitely. When we finally made it out of our room close to noon after the first night, the staff had made sure there was plenty of fresh fruit, cheeses and meats available for the taking, and they happily offered to also prepare us yummy eggs and bacon and cappuccinos every day too. Maria was especially wonderful with all the suggestions she had for things to do around the city, including a long stroll along the river to the neighboring town of Matosinhos (definitely go there for the fish!!!), a river taxi to get to the wine caves, and made us bookings at Graham's Port Lodge and their associated restaurant, Vinum, on the same stunning property. All in all, this was the perfect place to begin our experience in Portugal and we couldn't be happier with how stellar and cheerful the 1872 River House team was in welcoming us to their fabulous -- and very conveniently located -- accommodations. Hope we can make it back to Porto sometime soon and will certainly look forward to staying here again. read more

I recently stayed at this hotel in the Ribeira district in Porto. It was a wonderful and conveniently located hotel with nice views of the Douro River. Pros: - centrally located - wonderful and helpful staff who can help book restaurants and tours for you - Wifi - Nice view of the river and Gaia (is you book the river view room) - nice walk in shower and heated bathroom floors - Breakfast: nice selection of pastries, ham, cheese, fruits and eggs/bacon - Clean, modern facilities - Access to a self-serve beer tap! Cons: - no parking on site but you can park at the nearby public parking spot 2-3 minutes away. Staying at the hotel gives you a discount. - more expensive but worth the splurge imo read more
