The Famous 4 Tunnels on 110 /Pasadena/Arroyo Seco Northbound
    Russ C.

This is my favorite Frwy in town, as long as there is no accidents or old lady's cruising. I learned how to drive on this Freeway's curves years ago. Still fun to drive for me. This is the oldest highway in the U.S. Originally designed for the first cars with the tunnels being built 1st, that's why the on ramps and off ramps have no acceleration and deceleration lanes. You know with the Stop sign on the on ramp and the 5 mph sign on the off ramps. Perfect only for sports cars. Best way between Pasadena and DTLA. Formerly known as Pasadena Frwy now reverted back as Arroyo Seco Parkway.

Lit up tail lights, a way too familiar sight here.

You're a bitch, plain and simple. Whoever conceived you should be tied up to a car and dragged full speed by their balls on you. Having an entrance to the 110 and an exit downtown so close together makes perfect sense (transition from the WB 101 to the SB 110)....IT IS MERGING HELL. Can't tell you how many close calls I've had by people cutting me off just to barely make it to the exit in the short distance they have. You have slowpokes in every lane from San Pedro to the 10. To add insult to injury, you have more traffic jams because the carpool lanes have become toll lanes and have been closed off to 99% of people, whose tax money already pays for it mind you. Because you know, only the rich should be able to enjoy the luxury and convenience of carpool lanes while us po' people should get migraines sitting in traffic. Then you have Downtown which never flows faster than 5 mph. I will concede when it's not packed, you're a fun ride from the 5 all the way to Pasadena with all your voluptuous curves and no big rigs allowed rule. But being the bitch you are, you had to fudge it up somehow and that is with your short entrance ramps. Your playing with your life just trying to get in, to live and die in LA literally.

Some people hate this freeway. I personally love it. It's unique in that this was the very first freeway on the West coast (opened in 1940), and the Los Angeles Freeway System was built around the Pasadena Freeway. It was completed and opened in parts, but the final completed roadway links Downtown Los Angeles with Downtown Pasadena, as it does today. It was designed as a "parkway" - with the highway meandering through lush landscaping and vegetation, with the Arroyo Seco right along side you. Back when it opened, cars were slow, and it was very easy to take a nice leisurely drive through nature, eventually ending up in Pasadena. It was easy to accelerate quickly to freeway speed from a full stop at an on ramp, because cars didn't go very fast on that freeway. Today, the Pasadena Freeway has remained just about the same as it used to be. It is very scenic as it passes through some of California's oldest neighborhoods. Some off-ramps (specifically the Los Angeles bound Fair Oaks offramp) have been taken out, and a lot of the lush landscaping has been taken out as well. Despite its scenic features, it is a dangerous freeway. Modern freeway speeds coupled with the sudden dips, sudden sharp curves and turns means that one has to be a skilled driver to maneuver this freeway. But to those who become experts at driving on this freeway, it's a fantastic experience. Those skilled drivers who learn the freeway's precise dips, turns, and curves, and come to expect them, can be rewarded with a fantastic driving experience, unmatched in any of the freeways that were built in Southern California after the Pasadena Freeway. In 2003, in an epic event, they shut down the Pasadena Freeway to traffic, and opened it up to pedestrians and bicyclists in something that came to be known as "ArroyoFest." Many described it as a transformative experience to travel through the silence of the Arroyo Seco and to commune with nature. Due to the tremendous cost of doing this, and the coordination required between the three cities of Los Angeles, South Pasadena, and Pasadena, it is very unlikely that this will happen again. Trucks are not allowed on the Pasadena Freeway, and one recent night, I learned why. I guess a big rig snuck onto the freeway (most likely didn't see the "NO TRUCKS" signs), and couldn't maneuver it. The driver tried to exit the freeway, but became stuck on one of the off ramps that lead to a bridge crossing the Arroyo. It was an interesting sight to see, a big rig stuck on one of the sharp off ramps. CHP was all over the scene. I don't know how they got it out of there. Some features to take note of: - The ornate Figueroa Street Tunnels, with the Seal of the City of Los Angeles on the portals. - The original bridges that cross the parkway and the Arroyo still remain in use. - Views of Downtown Los Angeles, coming southbound from Pasadena. - The original 1895 Santa Fe Arroyo Seco Railroad Bridge (now a part of the MTA's Gold Line) - The Downtown LA "Stack" or "Downtown Four-Level" - the world famous stack of freeways meeting that one often sees on pictures taken from overhead. - No shoulder lanes whatsoever!

We did purchase beverages today due to heat wave to stay hydrated. They gave those Coke machines that give you at least 100 options with a touchscreen. The recliner seats were very comfortable and due to the 1.5 hour run time, nobody had to sneak out for a restroom break. It was a nutty, completely bonkers film and yet internally consistent and thought provoking. Excellent music, acting, and directing. I guess partly because I had zero expectations, I laughed aloud multiple times and was thoroughly entertained. It's what I would call a surrealistic dramedy maybe? Because the voucher was only good for 30 days I wanted to use it before it expired which is 30 days after your birthday. My birthday is April 12 so we were well within that time frame. The bar code wouldn't scan. Odd because our tickets scanned as they always do with zero issues. The wait became uncomfortable after two employees were unable to scan it and called a manager who still couldn't scan it. The voucher was for $15 and I wish that they had decided early on to just go ahead and process it rather than making us stand there and wait which they eventually did. C'mon guys, don't make this birthday perk uncomfortable for the guest, fix your system.

And how super intense and cool (figuratively and literally) it was! Total about 10mi from the top of Lake - Echo Mountain - Castle Canyon trail - Inspiration Point - Sam Merrill trail - Echo Mountain and back down to Lake. DEFINITELY a strenuous hike and would highly recommend hiking poles, sunscreen, water, and snacks! The view is incredible, especially with tons of fresh snow everywhere. Hiked this early March 2023 and the Castle Canyon trail leading off from Echo Mountain (a decent hike in its own right) is pretty challenging, if not a bit brutal in some areas: slippery snow, downed trees and bushes blocking the path, and a heavy incline. Again, highly recommend poles. Once at Inspiration Point the view is phenomenal. The Pacific Ocean, Palos Verdes, Catalina Island, and even Anaheim and Irvine are all visible from the top, and downtown LA too of course. Lots of picnic benches and photo-op-worthy view finders for major Southern California sites. Gorgeous San Gabriel mountains in the background. The Sam Merrill trail leading down the backside of the mountain (and then curving back around to the south/west) is much more tame (but still a bit precarious with 2+ feet of snow) and very sun-exposed all the way back to Echo Mountain. All in all probably one of the more butt-kicking Los Angeles hike. Takes about 4-5hrs round trip depending on your pace.

Me and my husband started around 7:30am and finished the whole hike around 1pm at a steady pace with about an hour break when we got to Inspiration Point. The hike from Cobb Estate to Echo Mountain was a breeze for us, but the hike from there to Inspiration was a whole other story. I recommend wearing long pants as the second half of the hiking path isn't as clear and pretty narrow on some parts. We took our time and treaded lightly but still got some minor scratches on our legs from all of the branches and leaves. My husband started getting irritated from walking into all of the spider webs lol. Not sure if the actual hike was 2 miles from Echo Mountain because it felt so much longer than that. We started getting really tired near the end from all the incline. We almost gave up until my husband saw the view of Inspiration Point. Once we got there, the views made it all worth it! Would we do it again? Maaaaaybe lol.

The territory is incredibly well maintained, with huge mature trees, beautiful flowers, fountains, mini waterfalls, and small ponds where you can see fish and turtles. There is also a lovely grassy area in the center where you can sit, relax, or have a small picnic. Geese walk freely around the gardens, and colorful parrots fly overhead, adding even more charm to the atmosphere. In April, the garden looks especially stunning -- the pergola and trees are in full bloom (I wish I remembered the names of those gorgeous flowers!), and the whole place feels alive and magical. Honestly, this garden is beautiful in any season of the year. You can come here with dogs, which is a big plus, but it's important to respect the property rules: pets must be on a leash, owners are responsible for cleanup, professional photography requires a permit, and activities like skateboarding, drinking alcohol, or organized sports events are not allowed. These rules help preserve the calm and cleanliness of the space. There is also a secondary school located on the property, which adds to the unique character of the place. Parking-wise, we were able to find free street parking nearby without any issues. This is a perfect spot to slow down, enjoy nature, and escape the city noise for a while. The home was rescued from demolition and moved to its current location, where it now serves as an office building behind the South Pasadena light rail station. Upon arrival, the sky was almost dark so everything was perfectly spooky. My initial plan was to walk around the outside of the home & post the video on TikTok. But as I made my way toward the corner where the home is situated, I noticed a small film crew with a couple tripods. I figured they were recording something for social media too, as it's not unusual to see that type of thing in L.A.. But I received an extra-special surprise immediately after seeing the famed Michael Myers mask atop another tripod. It is great to see all these locations so well preserved after so many years since they shot the original Halloween directed by Maestro Carpenter in South Pasadena. I am glad at least this part of LA is great about preservation. I wil conclude my horror location quest in the area with the Hedge. But this is your Halloween location trilogy guide!
