Now they have lame Dom and Melissa in the morning and they are vulgar and the show appears to be tanking... and Dommie boy doesn't even live in the Denver market area. I still want to know how Winston and Mel were still getting bonuses and awards after they were fired? Something is fishy... But hey Kool105, you made your bed... how's those ratings now? So let me set it up: I get my…read moreArea 93.3 newsletter earlier in the week and much to my delight there is a presale for Stone Temple Pilots. Since this is one of my all time favorites I decide this is a must concert (no matter how crazy Scott Weiland is I think his voice is like butter). So 10a I click the link from Area 93.3 and it opens Ticketmaster and much to my dismay - no KTCL presale box!! Nooooo! So I shoot off an email to the station, just as an FYI. Much to my surprise, in less than a couple minutes I got a response from Nick Cage. Color me impressed (what color is impressed anyways? I want to say purple for some reason). Long story short, he got me squared away. 5 Stars for Nick Cage! Now I have my STP tix! Other than that, it is one of my go-to radio stations. No. 1 on the ole dial. I wish they would play a little more obscure stuff and not repeat so many songs, I mean I like Muse, but do I need to hear them 10xs a day? Still, a good spot to linger on the dial for awhile. And good response time from their DJs!

Comm-Unity Radio! These granola-eatin' hippies in Boulder…read moreare doing some great stuff. They play some strange indie stuff, lots of old time country music. My favorite show is Honky Tonk Heroes on Saturday mornings. The best part of the station is that if you don't like the music, give it two hours max, and they'll have a new show on. In one afternoon, you may hear Reggae, Grateful Dead, Electronica, Punk Polka, grind core, and Emo Square dancing music. This is a non-profit radio station on the left side of the dial. They don't have any advertisements, just the occasional weather update or a public service announcement. They play lots of the weirdest stuff, going on strange rabbit-hole disc discussions. The annoying part of community radio is the occasional fund drive. They have all kinds of fun events that they hold in the Denver and Boulder areas, like concerts, parties, and even plant sales!

Since KGNU is an independent community radio station, that is fueled not by advertisments but by community donations, you don't get the same sort of feel that you get with most major radio stations. The fact that you can listen to them online (www.kgnu.org) in hi-def streams definitely helps this otherwise obscure station get the attention it deserves. And the music they play....! This isn't the same old pop top 20 you hear at every single mall and commercial. No no...you are finally listening to a station with djs who care about pushing the envelope a little bit and playing the stuff that you don't hear all the time. This of course is because most of the djs at KGNU are there because they love what they are doing, not because they are getting paid huge sums (or anything for that matter). I've been inside the studios myself several times, and I must admit...I was inpressed. I'm not saying I like everything they play, but they really do have interesting shows...and more than once I actually wrote the names of artists down I heard on KGNU. How often do you do that when you are listening to the radio? As a community radio station, I think you can even dj yourself...of course this might be at 4 am...but hey, its about time they had a drum and bass show eh? Or maybe you are more into Tuva throat-singing, I can't say. Keep the independent tunes coming KGNU.

I do wish it was real time, but I chose to live off grid where I stream everything over cell signal so no need to pay for cable so that is on me. I see complaints that are just not valid. Morning news is supposed to be different from evening news folks. Upbeat, cheerful delivery in the mornings to start your day is important. All members of the cast appear to genuinely enjoy their jobs and each other. One person complains repeatedly about Ashley not reading a teleprompter correctly. Well, that person still watches, just likes to complain. Like he/she actually has the knowledge of what precisely is on the teleprompter. Whatever, change the damn channel. Complaints about Kylie? Are you blind? Oh, another said she talks too fast. I'd say that person listens too slow. And a complaint about Dan Daru. Some people just don't understand humor, or comic relief, or people with comedic personalities. Thats a shame. I'd love to sit and have a beer or 3 with that guy. This doesn't happen when I similarly stream NBC, CBS or ABC but I prefer to get my news from Fox. When Fox times out and you log back in, it starts with an advertisement and you loose the continuity of the prior news segment. After about 3 timeouts, I just hang it up and turn to another station. Advertisements are also a big issue. This morning, Fox 31, CW2 ran the same Oak Street Health ads exclusively with the same commercial over and over again.

Music is one of my biggest passions, and Radio 1190 consistently gives me soul food for my ears. Where else can you hear Cut Copy, Hank Williams Sr., Atmosphere and Sharon Jones, all in one set? They truly cover the entire spectrum of music, and their only limitation is that they won't play music that you can hear on mainstream radio. Their specialty shows kick major ass. I especially like Route 78 West (honkey tonk and trucker music), Beats from the East (contemporary Indian and Bollywood music), and the Local Shakedown (local music, duh!). They sponsor local music events, showcase up and coming bands, and give a ton to the Denver/Boulder music community. Sure, the DJs can be pretty sloppy and amateurish, but that's part of their charm as they're not pros, just music lovers. And yes, they're an AM station that broadcasts in mono (listen online for the full stereo experience), and yes, they have to power down when the sun goes down, but that just makes you appreciate it more. You never know what you're going to hear. You might love the current song and hate the next, but you'll never get bored, that's for sure. Viva the AM revolution! Cheers!

That's why Radio 1190, and all the publicly funded radio stations, are my bastion. These are the only places you will hear new, unique and original music. If you wanna listen to Lady Gaga all day, this probably isn't the place for you. I especially love the wide variety of shows. From hip-hop, dance, reggae, LOTS of indie, funk, folk/bluegrass, metal/goth/industiral, jazz, creole, many local artists . . . they're bound to have something you'll like. Save yourself from Clear Channel and move towards the light. There is a brighter side to Denver/Boulder radio.
