Maybe a little dated decor wise, but a great library nonetheless that indeed more resembles a giant mall than a public library....escalators, elevators, loads of people all walking around the 10 floors of the open center space designed architectural styled building. My personal interest was peeked for they have a resource space dedicated specifically to art up on their top floor. It is easily organized by architecture or comics or contemporary art or whatever in the art world. Libraries are about learning and are free! I love a good library. This library has several floors. Adult books are on floor 3 (Chinese ) and floor 4 (English ). Floor 2 is kids books. Soooo many kids books! Plenty of seating for children and parents to spend some reading quality time. But it can get crowded. That's about it.

What I like best about this library in particular, is the copious amounts of workspace. My recommendation would be to go to the 10th floor and to use the creative resources annex. In there, you'll find three large bench tables, where you can spread out all of your books, laptop, and other paraphernalia before getting on with a bit of work. There are also plenty of power points, and as with all Hong Kong libraries, there is the free government Wi-Fi. Again, as with all Hong Kong libraries, you do not need to be a member of the library, or a Hong Kong residence, to use the facilities here. This makes ideal for tourists and other travellers. Also, there is no booking system here for the workspace use. In other Hong Kong libraries, you are required to sign in and take a laminated card to reserve spot. In City Hall Library just make yourself comfortable. As well as this very conducive work environment, and of course the books, the library also lends CDs. These are free of charge from the library they are located in, or chargeable (HKD25) if you need them delivered from another location, which you can do online. You can also just listen to these CDs in the library if you have your headphones. If you do manage to get the creative resources annex, look out to the old chap in the corner who is always there, without fail. I still think he's actually on the same page that I saw him reading six months ago.

In fact, running with our books while catching our breath is no stranger to lots of CUHK students. And I have to say that one staircase on the side of the library is famous for students to fall off during those times, and it is commonly known as the "PK stairway". There are over 7 libraries at CUHK and the Main Library has got to be the most packed one in all times. Before the expansion, though the library itself was fairly big, comprised of 5 floors, still during exam seasons, you could never find an empty table or chair. Now with the new wing, the surprisingly stylish design definitely makes it more spacious to cater for students' need; but it does not really go with the old wing in my opinion. Anyway, if you have been there, you will know what I mean. One fun fact: have you ever passed through "The Arch"? I mean the sculpture in front of the Chinese University Main Library. There have been rumors saying that one cannot graduate if he or she has walked under it before. Therefore, it is now called "Gate of Wisdom"; but I still doubt if anyone is going to walk through it. But if you did, it is believed that you can just fall off at the PK Stairway and you will be fine, well, maybe not physically.

Though I definitely spent more than I would have for souvenirs at the Ladies Market, it was worth it not to feel stressed out having to haggle on the streets of Mong Kok. Plus, I walked out with better quality stuff, supported a local business, and got to check out the current art exhibit ("LONG TIME NO SEE": a set of hand-drawn murals paying homage to the history of the PMQ building).

Reading online confirmed my…read moresuspicions- the British Consulate in Hong Kong is the biggest in the world and built into the complex is also the office for British Council which deals with educational affairs. My first visit to the British Consulate was to renew my British passport- this was before the days when it was all done by post and online. I cold report that the staff were friendly and they did try to process my application as smoothly as possible. As with all major institutions after 911, security is extremely tight and you could tell that the front door has been made as small as possible to prevent any attacks. On the top of the escalator you will spot a coat of arms- may seem slightly familiar and you would be right as that used to be hung in one of the reception rooms at Government House. My latest visit was also for the same purpose and I was told very quickly that I was not to come in. Not because I'm a terrorist but the fact is that all passport applications are now handled remotely and you have to submit an application online. I guess this is part of the cost cutting procedure in maintain as few personnel here as possible. The British Council section is much more inviting (naturally) and they offer both local language courses as well as advice on higher education in the UK. I was there for an IELTs test and found the place to be really comfortable and the staff friendly. I guess its no wonder that British Council remains popular with students and shall continue to be so.

I was just wandering around Kowloon, trying to figure out what to do for breakfast, then I got distracted by the entrance for the Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars in Kowloon Park. There are statues of comic characters from Hong Kong comics and Hong Kong comic artists. It's fun, and cheesy, and cool. If you're like me and have no knowledge of any of these characters there are little plaques (in English and Cantonese) that tell you some information about these characters and the artists who created them. The attraction is free to check out, and it's fun to pose for selfies with statues of penguins and super spies. Kowloon Park itself is really nice and is definitely worth checking out. Kowloon Park is a short walk from the Jordan MTR Station. The Tsim Sha Shui Station is close by as well. I went here 3 times in 5 days. That's how much I loved it. Maybe I'm just a nerd, but this is a fun place to visit and worth seeing if you're in Hong Kong.

In the middle of all the bustling crowd, due to the street markets in the area, lies a library on…read morethe 5th and 6th floor of the Shui Wo Street building. I would not be surprised if you accidentally miss it because honestly, who would've thought you'd find the library above a street market building? [Besides those who have seen libraries before in this situation, or someone directed you.] On the 5th floor is the children section, and on the 6th floor, it's the adult section. I entered through the 6th floor. Circulation is to the left, and you turn right. When you make the right, you look to the left, and it's filled with people sitting down with newspapers. And to the right, the audiovisual center. There will be stairs as you keep walking, and when you go down, you'll see columns and columns of books, and people sitting down doing their homework or reading. I immediately walked into the English section to the right of the stairs because I can only read English, and well, they have a good amount of English books! I was a happy camper. I couldn't find some books I've been wanting to read on the shelf, but I think it's fairly good for the amount of space they have in this library. Not too shabby. They don't have Jack Kerouac or Ken Kesey, they only have one book of Nick Hornby, several books by D.H. Lawrence, but they don't have Lady Chatterley's Lover. They do have Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, Prey by Michael Crichton, and many books by Stephen King. This is just to name a few. If you don't like the selection, tough. Try picking out a book and read something new. If not, you could always make yourself happier by going outside and purchase food from the street markets. Books for life!
