Change is imminent in the LKF landscape, especially when it comes to constantly evolving nightlife…read morescene. Somehow Volar has managed to stay afloat through the years, amassing a fan following through quality expat marketing and strategic western influences to deliver a clubby experience like none other. Fast forward nearly a decade of being a fixture along D'Aguilar, and there are copycat joints all around the hood. Yet even so, none are like Volar. The place is incredibly intimate, the kind of sultry vibe that comes out in certain posh spots. Bright lights like places in Miami with the atmosphere that would match some Vegas clubby spots. The bottle service is not cheap here, but then again, nothing is. Service can be great and it can be subpar, it simply depends on what night and how lucky one is. In some circles, this place was the "IT" spot to be seen in the scene. Models, celebs, and expat influencers crowded up the space like they owned the joint. And they might as well have since Volar is a membership only establishment. Does it completely keep the riff raff out? Not at all, the dbag level is high here. And the snootiness of most patrons is immediately felt, but that comes with the territory. The prices and the beautifully pretentious people aren't exactly my cup of tea, but I still maintain that I've had a great time here each time I've gone. The music is solid and with good company, Volar is an adequate locale for eye candy and space. I remember receiving a t-shirt during one of their anniversaries that had an equalizer LED design focused around Volar. I still have that shirt ... and it's now 7 years old. Here's to 7 more years for Volar. I am always going to support places that carry a bit of nostalgia and a good time. I've been lucky to have experienced both here.

Here is the key to enjoying what Volar has to offer: make sure you're well loosened up (i.e. intoxicated) before going, expect crazy crowds on the weekends, and know someone who has a table there where you can hang (or be prepared to shell out some scrill for your own). The crowd is young and fun, and while there are creepers and douchebags present, the bad elements can be avoided if you just stay in touch with your inner misanthrope. Dress to impress (or have a fat wad of cash that you're prepared to spend on bottles) and you will have no problems getting inside. Come here prepared to shake your booty!! The sound system is excellent with deep rumbling bass, and there are 2 different rooms for dancing. One caters to house music lovers, while the other is more hip hop and dubstep type beats. Remember to bring sunglasses... that 6:00 a.m. sunshine is a bitch after a night of partying inside that crazy club...

We automatically went up the elevator and into the club. The club was pretty happening! It was Monopoly theme night. Everyone has champagne, the DJ was just killing it on the stage. All the girls were dancing, and they had special girls dressing gold dresses walking around too. Fun and games, but then the police showed up. Everything was on hold for 30 minutes while the police officers question everyone whether they were in the country legally or not. So all of the police officers we're standing there making sure that no one leaves the club. And all of the workers and DJs were telling everyone to keep their mouth shut so the police can do their work. Just kept yelling at us! Then the police finish their job, and I guess they didn't find anyone that were illegal, so they left. Then everything went back to normal, we started all dancing and drinking again. It was a pretty crazy night, and I had to make sure that I leave by certain time so I can catch the train back to the hotel. Fun club, but I think it would be expensive to go by myself or with a group. And I don't really want to wait in line.

I had no serious intention of hitting much of anything up in this area, but some bouncers outside grabbed us and told us to head up the elevator and have a look. It was early and we chilled in the Hip hop room upstairs. Music was on point and it was a fun crowd and the bartenders worked fast. It smoked the other club I stopped by last trip Ce La Vi which by comparison was much more touristy and contrived. I think it is somewhat members only, with Memberships running around 30,000 HKD. Once this place started going, after a few fun hours in the hip hop room, the main room was packed, sound system was solid. Much more bottle centric then maybe I would have liked but still nice. Reminds me of another favorite of mine, Elektro in Taipei. I'm in HK again in May. I'm sure I'll run my delegation through here Mose likely. I'm impressed.

However, It was during the week and the Lan Kwai Fong district was quieter than usual, and maybe also the fears of rioting for democracy from the locals caused this area to be even more secluded. Empty it was, but music was still blasting from the outdoor bars. My friends and I being jetlagged from the long flight wanted to hang out somewhere more quiet. And Tasmania was the favorite after bar hopping. Tasmania plays loud Western music too. Yes, some hip hop but mainly pop. We were greeted at the door by security and the hostess who took us upstairs. A bit on the dark side, but beautiful lighting very fitting to its ambiance. There was two bars, couches, and ping pong tables! Cool... I wanted to play, but the wait was long. Fine, we sat on the couch and got table service. The drinks menu wasn't huge, but good enough. A good variety of mixed cocktails. I had my Moscow Mule. A little weak on the alcohol side, as it was mostly ice and ginger soda. Oh well, it's good to stay sober though as we just got off the plane and pretty much went straight to dinner then the bars with our local friends. Yes, we checked into our Airbnb prior. Lol. I like Tasmania. A very classy environment minus the noisy crowds. The drinks was a bit weak, but still had a wonderful time soaking it in with people there. Tasmania seems very international, as we saw many Europeans inside. All good! Drinks was a little more pricey than the traditional bars there. Gunbaeee!

And Tazmania is always around for you. In the crazier years, I used to come here often. Like Mondays. And Thursdays (for the ping pong every Tue/Thu), and then Fridays and maybe Saturdays too. It's always a good "buffer zone" after dinner and before you go somewhere else. It's never too quiet. Well on a Monday night it can be quiet but hey, you have the whole pool table for yourself. And it's never too crowded. They'd even raise one of the pool table overhead to spare some space for guests. You come early at 6:30pm, you can grab some of their feed buffet finger food. If you come later (like after 1am), you can just treat this place as your yet another club and pop some champagne. It's definitely on the higher end of price tag. But it's a good strategy to keep the kids away, really. The only downfall is it closes "early" at 3am even on weekends. There were a couple of times, again, in the crazier years, where girls would check their bags to the cloakroom and forgot to get it back, when they wandered off to some other bars/clubs till a bit too late.

Taking advantage of a membership that was gifted to me, I had a chance to really soak in the amenities and scope out the venue while enjoying a night out. Like most venue spots in Hong Kong, this is considerably smaller than some membership based clubs I've been to. At two stories high, Kee Club HK is has a trifecta of bar space, a food / restaurant area, and a reception spot (i.e. dance hall). The place is exceptionally clean and is often catered to private events. There is less of a lounge vibe, which means I'd only be coming here for special occasions. For some newcomers to the club, the place might feel somewhat stuffy compared to the other VIP clubs around the hood. The staff is fiercely protected on keeping the riff raff out, even so much as to deny actual members from coming in if they're not dressed (no shorts, opened toed shoes, etc.). A membership isn't cheap of course, but it might be something to look into if the around the corner LKF scene isn't your cup of tea.

I went here on a Friday night for a special event and had a reasonably good time. Maybe I'm getting old but I was glad that we got there early because it started fill up with people. The good thing about private clubs is that it doesn't get * too* crowded with wall to wall people and that you're able to move about and get your groove on. Once you go up the big and stylish staircase, it has some really nice artwork and we stayed up here to enjoy drinks and catch up with old friends and talk to super drunk strangers. Servers and staff were nice and it was definitely an enjoyable experience. We knew we were really old when we spilled out onto LKF and it was teeming with hipster 20 somethings, all ready to party. I felt like their Auntie, looking at them and thinking to myself " I wish I was young and full of energy again to party like a rockstar!"
