Wah wah wah! Another hidden gem!…read more The food here is so good and there's quite a few unique dishes!! Seafood is very fresh and tasty. The deep fried tofu is bomb! Super silky and smooth, without a chewy skin. The salted egg yolk shrimps are coated evenly and the shells are edible! The mantis prawns are very juicy and fresh. I also loved the clams soup and the pork chops! Must haves: salted egg yolk shrimps, deep fried tofu, and mantis prawns. Prices are also very fair. Probably even cheaper than many other places that aren't as good! I saw a few michelin signs on the walls, but I'm not sure if it's referring to them or the alcohol they're promoting. But I do think their food is good enough to be Michelin!! It is quite a busy place so be sure to book a reservation!

Also known as "Hing Gung" (慶功), it literally means to celebrate and to reward the hard work the crew put into the show. Much like sik siu, since the eaters are of high exertion, the food would most naturally be as trashy as can be~ Healthy eaters might want to hit the return button now as the foods may be despicably fattening. Deep fried is almost the golden rule for every trashy food, even in Hong Kong; the famous shrimp toast is actually minced shrimp smeared on a piece of bread and deep fried to crunchy perfection; and you got it, the piece of bread is soaked with grease. To make it even more damaging, mayonnaise is served on the side for you to dip the toast in. Damaging as it seems, but it is also very gratifying and is often the dish that is cleared the soonest. Hing Gung is often an event of the nights and there aren't a lot of joint cater to this batch of customers at this time of the day. I still remember walking into this shop with the waiter asking us to wait outside the shop at 11 in the evening, while they were trying hard to rearrange the tables to sit the 15 of us down. For a restaurant that is still crowded towards midnight, you know they must have done something right.

Typing this review on a partially broken keyboard so please excuse the typos…read more 5 Stars = "Woohoo! As good as it gets" My relatives brought me here for dinner when I visited Hong Kong from the US (haven't been back since 1997). This place is in a fishing village/area, we took the subway and got off at the Yau Tong station, after asking around we got to the seafood area...it was a lot of walking to get to this specific restaurant. This restaurant is at the END of all the other ones along the shore. As you twist and turn to get here, you will pass by a bunch of stores that sell fresh seafood and many will hassle you into eating at their adjacent restaurants. One thing I noticed about ALL the stores is that nothing smelled "fishy"! There was not a stench in the air! I've always heard that fresh seafood does not smell fishy. This is the first time I understood what they were talking about. When we finally got to the restaurant, my family decided on the dishes they wanted, I'm not sure if it was because they knew the owner or if this was something you can ask for because we were walked back out to their tanks to pick out the fish, lobster, clams, etc that we wanted. It was a totally awesome experience. The food was nothing short of AMAZING! I have never had seafood this great in my entire 35 years of life and I live 10 minutes from the ocean in California. Everything was cooked perfectly and dishes were not overly seasoned so the flavor of the seafood really comes out. The "peeing" shirmp was soooooooo good, it was better than any Maine lobster I've had. Yes I just compared a shrimp to a lobster, it was that good! If there's anything I would recommend, it would be that and the jack knife clams. Price is a little on the high end especially given the cheap food prices in Hong Kong, but I can't wait to visit again.

If no one guide or direct us to there, it will take us long time to find it. One of my friends is their regular customer and he got VIP room reserved. Nice! I didn't follow them to select live/fresh seafood from the tanks or seafood market coz I preferred to spend time with my friends for chatting. My good friends would know I like anything kind of live seafood, just pick whatever.... Poached shrimps - Caridean shrimps size are pretty small but it tasted so fresh and sweet. Stir fried razor clams with black bean sauce - **my favourite dish** It cooked perfectly and so delicious. Steamed scallops with garlic and cellophane noodles - Scallop so fresh and mixed with garlic so tasty. Stir fried Jumbo mantis shrimp with garlic and chili - Mantis shrimp just a bit overcooked coz was a little bit chewy. But, I liked the smell with garlic and chili. Steamed Grouper - I loved steamed fresh fish, it cooked perfectly and fantastic. Steamed fresh Abalones - It is finest seafood! Abalone texture was firmed and clean aftertaste tasted. Thumbs up!! Chinese Mitten crabs - The season just started and we're in right timing to have mitten crabs. It's not meaty like Dungeness crab. It's custardy in texture and like sea urchin.. I also felt guilty to eat whole mitten crab coz it's quite high cholesterol. Gai Lan - it's great coz we should have more veggies (rich in fiber) and help for digestion. Fruits platter - The mango was so tasty and juicy and grapes were sweet too. I don't mind to come back next time for such good quality of dishes.

If you're going on a holiday or Sunday, be sure to ask if their head chef is in before you decide if you want to go there or not. I've been there many times and their head chef has never disappointed me. When in Sai Kung, I advise you to skip the restaurants that the touts will bring you to because those restaurants are much more expensive than but not better than this little mom and pop restaurant. Also, skip the big tourist trap restaurants on the main drag for the same reason. The owner "Michael" also owns a live seafood stand in the wet market behind the restaurant. Ask the owner to show you which seafood stand this is. Then, go and pick out and pay for the live seafood that you want them to cook for you. Take this seafood back to the restaurant and they will cook it for you for a small fee, This fee varies, but it is usually the greater of 200HKD per person or 100% of the price of the seafood. Many times, it is much less than this. I don't know how he figures how much to charge me as my Chinese speaking ability is crap, but he's always been fair and honest with me. This is a stupendous bargain, because I have a relative in the food industry and he informs me that most restaurants charge 200% of the price of the groceries as the profit margin to charge you. On this trip, I had the live abalone, living scallops, pissing shrimp (mantis shrimp), fresh razor clams, and chicken. All of the seafood has that fresh, sweet, sea taste that only living seafood has. None of it tasted "fishy". BTW, you have to tell them how you want it cooked, so if you're not a major foodie, bring a friend who is or it will be cooked wrong, through no fault of the restaurant's. I had the razor clam stir fried with hot peppers and black bean. It was not too spicy as to overpower the natural flavor of the razor clams. There was only a tiny bit of sand in it. On a previous visit, I had the razor clams steamed with garlic, ginger, onions, scallions, and wine. There was zero sand in it on my previous visit. I like it steamed more than the stir fry method. On this visit, I had the live scallops steamed with garlic, onions, scallions, ginger and wine. It was divine. The abalone was steamed with special sauce. Both the abalone and scallops were not rubbery. If you overcook these shellfish, it will be rubbery and it is very easy to overcook. The chef here is very skillful. The pissing shrimp (mantis shrimp) were stir fried in cheese crust. It was fragrant and slightly pungent from the cheese. All the seafood was excellent. The ginger chicken was average. I don't know what I was thinking, ordering a chicken in a seafood restaurant. Duh. Service (***** out of *****); Unlike most Cantonese restaurants, the waiters here will check up on you to see how you are doing, they'll change out your dirty plates, and the manager will also check up on you. Atmosphere (** out of *****); A typical mom and pop mini-restaurant. They have some photos of celebrities who've dined there before proudly displayed on the walls, but they have no decor and the front door is often open when the weather is nice outside, so you might have to fend off an occasional fly or mosquito. I did not see any flies at all on this trip. Conclusion (***** out of *****); The tally is 4 stars, but I gave them an extra star for value. They have no English menu, but it is not really necessary. All you have to do is point at the seafood that you want and then tell them, "tsing" (steamed), "chow tseow yeem" (stir fried with salt and pepper), "hu dow see tsew" (black beans and pepper), "cheese" (with cheese), or "chow" (stir fried). This is a hidden gem on the side streets frequented by locals, away from the tourist traps. For the best seafood in Hong Kong at a very reasonable price, go directly to New Tak Kee Seafood Restaurant. P.S. some unscrupulous seafood, mushroom, beef, and dairy vendors sell radioactive stuff from Fukushima and the surrounding regions in Japan. This is a big problem in Hong Kong because almost all food is imported into Hong Kong. My crazy S.O. actually tested all the seafood here and it is all within safety limits.

It's definitely beneficial to know the language and style of ordering before coming to one of the remaining restaurants in Hong Kong that will give you that old-school Hong Kong feel, where tables spill onto the street and extends down an alleyway. A friend of a friend brought us here on a Monday night after a long day of boating, so you can imagine how hungry we were! The moment we sat down (in a prime location: next to the where the butchers are slicing and dicing the freshly made roast pork, duck, etc.), our waiter, a older gentleman has tea and utensils ready and has a notepad out for our order. Now I can't tell you the actual name of each dish in Chinese, but please refer to my photos to reference the dish. (If need be, show your waiter the photo! You won't regret it.) Seasoned potatoes with steak: I believe this is the first thing on the menu, and with good reason! I don't know what kind of seasoning they used but the taste of these potatoes are out of this world. These are definitely not your run-of-the-mill sliced potatoes. I felt obligated to offer the last piece to my friends but breathed an internal sigh of relief when they declined and I was able to have it for myself. The steak was delicious as well, tender and just the right size to have with the potatoes! Seasoned crawfish with ginger and scallions: These are so fresh! You can walk right up the seafood market next door and ask for a pound of these crawfish to be cooked. There's a technique to eating these: rip off the head, then take the tail and pull lightly to separate the shell from the meat. Scallops with vermicelli: A giant scallop seasoned with cooked ginger and vermicelli. I practically inhaled this. The scallop and vermicelli both complemented each other; the subtle flavors of each mixed with the ginger. Roast Quail: Quail can be a bit difficult to eat, with many small bones, but it was worth it! The skin of the quail was flavorful and not too salty, and the meat tender. Battered Squid: I love seafood, particularly fried calamari, so if you're like me, you will love this dish! While similar to fried calamari, the batter for this squid is light and doesn't overwhelm the squid. The squid itself was perfectly chewy and not rubbery at all. Veggies with egg and preserved duck egg: Perfectly cooked veggies in a broth I would have loved some extra rice to pour into. The egg and preserved duck egg both add some extra kick to this dish. Fatty beef with broad noodles clay pot: I almost didn't think I could fit any more food into me, but I had to try it. The beef had just enough fat on it and was sliced thin enough to enjoy. The noodles and broth were delicious. 100% would recommend to a friend, a stranger, an enemy! The total came out to about 188 HKD each, between the 4 of us. Well worth it.

There are two lift areas to go up - one in the main lobby and one off to the right side, down a narrow hallway (best for when the main lifts are too busy). When talking to my friends about the best places for dim sum, establishments such as Maxim's Palace, Tim Ho Wan, Lei Garden, Dim Dim Sum and One Dim Sum pop up. But not many know about Ho Choi... Why is that? I'm actually not too sure myself. They have two branches in Sheung Wan/Sai Wan, which could be far for some, and one in Kwun Tong (which I frequent because it's close to where I work). Some say the original Ho Choi in Sheung Wan/Sai Wan is OK, nothing to special, so I decided to take a visit out to see if they were correct. (A separate review for the Sai Wan one will be posted soon!) But I can definitely vouch for Ho Choi in Kwun Tong to be one of my favorite places! The tables in the main area - that is, not in a "room" - are up for grabs, first come first serve. Get there before 12:10pm to beat the lunch crowd, or risk waiting for a while. The best thing, if you want to skip the wait, is to make a reservation for one of the tables in the "rooms" for ordering main dishes (小菜). You must order 3 or more main dishes when seated at those tables. But of course, you can still order dim sum there. Win-win! Also, because it's sectioned off from the main area, it's much quieter and more conducive to business lunches. While the prices for dim sum and main dishes have gone up in recent years (inflation, rental increases, etc), rest assured you are still getting your money's worth of delicious food! They used to have different price tiers - cheaper in the morning, standard rates during weekday lunch times, and higher prices on the weekends - but upon checking the prices during my last visit, it looks like they are now fixed. For 5 people, with 4 main dishes, and 6 dim sum plates, the total came to be just under HKD 700. Excellent bang for your buck! The tea charge is $12 per person, which is fairly standard. Dim sum plates are tiered, starting at $17 for 'small', up to $32-$35 for 'specialty' plates. Ordering the dim sum is very easy, as you just need to fill in a Scantron-like sheet (college throw-back eh?), with dishes listed in English and Chinese. I was asked to order for the table: - Crispy chicken (half) 脆皮雞 (半) - so crispy, so good! - Sweet and sour pork 咕嚕肉 - my first time ordering the 咕嚕肉 here and everyone raved about it! The freshly prepared sweet and sour pork is a game-changer here and puts those found at a buffet to shame. - Sauteed broccoli with scallops - need those vegetables and seafood! - E-fu noodles with shrimp and egg whites - I appreciate the lack of salt and strong flavors in this noodle dish, as it helps to balance out the other salty and heavy dishes. Thankfully no MSG! Dim sum on point. I'm already hungry for more, even from writing this review. Top favorites here are the BBQ pork buns, chicken feet with black bean sauce (my absolute favorite!), Chiu Chow dumplings (潮州粉粿), and Jin Deui sesame balls (煎堆). If you still have space for dessert, go for it. If you don't, still go for it.
