I recently visited this famed bakery and tried their original wife cake and one that is green bean and ginger flavored. Both were warm, flaky and gooey in the middle. I loved that the original was not too sweet and had an extremely fresh flavor. The green bean and ginger was also really interesting. I liked that there was just a hint of ginger and that it wasn't overpowering. Because I didn't learn until later that they were also famous for their pineapple buns during my first visit, I had to return to check them out. I bought an original pineapple bun and a Tai Tung pineapple bun. The original one was rather disappointing. It might have been that I didn't get one that was fresh out of the oven and it was cold that day so they cooled down quicker than normal. The top wasn't especially crispy and the bottom was actually kind of rubbery. The Tai Tung pineapple bun is interesting because it has pineapple inside! I didn't think that the pineapple filling actually added too much pineapple flavor to the bun though. Although unique, I was also a little bit disappointed with this one. I would say stick with the wife cake and skip the pineapple buns from here.

Over the years their business has stream lined and sized down to one "headquarter" shop and a few retails in other parts of the city. The headquarter is still located at the same spot as it did years ago but with a face lift done last year. As a major local tourist attraction on the weekends, it's always crowned with people buying their signature item - the wife cake 老婆餅 - a flat flaky pastry filled with a sweet winter melon filling. Kai Kee has the most delicious fishball, rice noodle, siu mai drenched in mixed sauce. You can get all three with all three sauces (peanut butter, sweet sauce, and hot sauce) or you can choose only the items you want. I've yet to try their chicken wings but I heard good things about those too. So please do yourself a favor and try their small snacks when you come here! But of course, their desserts deserve some of the spotlight. They are well known for their huge grass jelly bowls topped with mixed fruits. I love grass jelly but not so much melons. I absolutely love their mango pomelo, durian/mango pancakes, and chocolate lava cakes. I never noticed they also sell cake until recently - and they're not basic cakes either. The one I wanted to try was rose cheesecake but they ran out. I can't wait till I get to eat their stuff again!
