誠品生活 - Want a caricature with your books?

Fancy going to a bookstore, get your books, and also pick up a new pair of eyeglasses, a necklace,…read morea bubble tea; a head of lettuce, a bag of quinoa and some sauces for dinner, a loaf of bread for tomorrow's breakfast, along with a toaster oven and coffee maker; some soap, incense, a potted plant for your home, and finally a caricature of yourself. Yes, you can do all that and more at this Eslite bookstore. While many bookstores carry some stationery, paper goods, toys and coffee, this place totally bring it to a new level. The store is somewhat divided up into stations like department stores, and as you walk around you will see a stall selling ceramics, then one selling cookies, another with leather goods... There was a lady making jewelries behind counter, one sampling her cakes, and another water-coloring on a table. There are quite a few booths promoting products designed in Hong Kong, with some local flair that makes for good souvenirs too. With so many things to see, this is a great place to spend some time, and you are unlikely to walk away empty handed. However, if you expect to find two storeys full of books, you may feel a bit disappointed. They do have a good selection of both English and Chinese titles, but not as extensive as I'd expected, and the organization is somewhat loose, making it hard to navigate around if you are looking for a specific title.

Summary: This place is beautiful but maddening if you are pressed for time. The large selection of…read moreknickknacks is also mystifying. Over a very sprawling two floors you can find (almost) everything you'd want - fountain pens, honey, baked goods, paper goods, nail polish, eyeglasses, tote bags, jewelry - oh yes, and books. Tons of books. This is a huge improvement from the hodgepodge of neglected shops that used to comprise Star House. The store is never totally crowded, and you have to wonder who is actually buying the beautifully arranged (but useless) expensive knickknacks all over there store. I've never actually seen anyone buy these things. Shoppers may be frustrated because the store is SO large that a quick in-and-out trip is nearly impossible. It's very easy to lose your bearings among the maze of books and displays - hence four stars not five. A personal highlight for me is the Ten Ren tea concession (2/F, near a bakery and the escalator entrance in Star House) - where you can get one of Hong Kong's butter cups of tapioca milk tea.

As I have often said about record shops these days- how are they making money? I mean with the…read moreadvent of MP3, iTunes and all the other channels in which we could have music for very little or no money at all; who is buying CDs nowadays? Turns out, quite a lot. Now Hong Kong Records is not your old stuffy CD store, they have reinvented themselves extremely well in providing a wide range of products in the store- DVDs, video games, magazines and even toys could be found in the shop. This must be one of the changes that has kept it alive for as long as it has. For me in particular, Hong Kong Records makes a great effort into making Classical and Jazz music lovers feel special. They have always had a separate section for Classical and Jazz music which is glassed off from the rest of the shop. that way you could enjoy your music without the new fangled stuff disturbing your peace from the main section of the store. The staff at these sections really know their stuff as well and they were able to find the album I need however obscure that album label may be. I think in general- the scale, the products, the fact that the shops are always a nice place so be- I think that's why they have survived that long and why they will be here to stay.

Normally there are 3 stops in this level of festival walk and Hong Kong records normally is my 2nd checkpoint before spending like forever in Parson's next door. Another confession I would like to make is that i dont normally buy CDs for music; a logical question to ask now would be: why on earth do I have to visit the place?? So this brings us back to the first statement that I am a creature of habits and I have been visiting this place since high school until uni; well...another more legitimate reason is that it is always good to keep yourself updated with the hits in different music charts and this is a good place to gain info regarding the latest release of albums. Other than music albums, there are also dvds of movies and drama series for you to choose from; that is to say if you are indifferent to pop music, there will still be sections that might interest you. Now you see why I have developed such a habit of visiting this place when ever i go to festival walk.
