I love coming to the swimming pool at the SCAA on weekday mornings! It costs HK$28 per entry to the…read morepool, which is a little bit more than the public swimming pools, but it's worth it (this is an extra fee on top of the SCAA membership fee). The water is just so much cleaner than the Victoria Park swimming, the locker room is much bigger and less cramped. You do need to bring your own amenities: towel, shampoo/conditioner/soap, and a lock for the locker, but it's quite easy to manage. If you want to do lap swimming, there are specific lanes for it - look for "circle lap swimming" yellow signs.

Hong Kong Football club and a few other teams have their own fancy clubs. Some how we managed to get the SCAA on board and since then I've discovered things about the place I would have never imagined. It has a huge range of facilities, including bowling as well as the other more boring sports like badminton... or squash. There are also a couple of restaurants within the complex that cater to different preferences in terms of cuisine and cash flow. Most of the time I go there (with my team) to eat in their new Inside Out restaurant, a simple place that serves great burgers, lots of beer, and has one sports or another playing on big screens. It was obviously designed to support sports teams as it's partitioned off from the rest of the floor, which happens to be a DIY barbecue. It's certainly better off that way, for safety reasons, considering the amount of alcohol consumed during the meal. And there was me, walking by the place twice a week thinking why on earth would people want to join that place just for a driving ranger?! It turns out there is a lot more than meets the eye and still more for me to experience. It's a great place to go with a group of friends for a list of occasions - drinking games while golfing, a hardcore gym workout, or just a meal with the family, it's got it all.

The main restaurant that I dine at is called The Island View. It's basically a buffet that has a carving station, seafood, salad, noodle bar and dessert table. Island View offers special themed nights every month. I've been to Korean and Vietnamese themed nights. The Club Bar down stairs has its own special nights too. For Cinco de Mayo, they have a special menu with Mexican food. The gym is modestly sized. There are a lot of standard excercise machines but a few important ones are disappointingly missing. Last time I looked, there were no cable machines and no lat pull down. As a member, you are not even allowed to bring guests either (not for free, that is). Guests can use the gym but they need to pay. I think it's some thing absurd like 250HKD an hour.

He somehow knew I would enjoy a buffet, with so many kinds of dessert. Months later, I stopped by for a tea session with my friend, but I also had to do some work because I was technically on the clock at my job. While chatting with my friend, I was tasked with helping to draft a TEDx event opening speech. Despite being a bit stressed, at least I could do so in luxury. In this private club, you come across all sorts of people here, presumably all belonging to a certain social stratum. It was fun being in that same space, which also caused me to pause and ponder the different spaces I have navigated. That's a sociology report for later. As expected, the bathrooms are really nice, and the buffet options were awesome and included Western, Chinese, South Asian, and other cuisines. I loved the sushi bar. Moreover, you get this amazing view of Victoria Harbor that you don't normally get to see. If someone extends an invite to this place, don't question it too much.

The downstairs area is where I've often had dinner, which is more Cantonese style cooking, whereas the upstairs area which I had just been to most recently had Western cooking, heavy on the Spanish and French style cuisines. For appetizers, I had the escargot, which wasn't my favorite but was not bad, there was a lot of garlic and butter in the sauce, a lot of which were outside of the snails but I wish there was more garlic inside the shells. For main course I had the duck breast with duck confit with corn on the side. It was a bit underwhelming, with the breast being a bit dry and bland and not the greatest pairing with the sauce/glaze on the side. The leg confit was better though. My partner had the black cod, though, and that was easily the best dish of the evening. The cook with sear was perfect, and had a great maple glaze and leek that complemented the butteriness of the fish.

Anyway, my uncle happens to be a member of this club and surprisingly they have a full running restaurant and bar here. So we came here for dinner and the food was delicious! The "jai jee gai" (I suppose it's the Chinese style fried chicken?) was my favorite. We also added a bit of fusion by ordering chicken curry, which was also very good. I suppose there are a lot of Indians here so they have a lot of Indian cuisine options on the menu. Pro tip: Only members of the club are allowed to pay the bill. So yeah, being the typical Chinese person that I am, I was trying to fight for the bill since I don't see my relatives often but my uncle beat me to it.
