I looked on-line and short of walking into a reputable art dealer and seeking their opinion of who they might use and refer me to, I saw Lee Wah Art & Framer continually pop up in my searches. Although it appears they have been in the business since 1973, they are reletively new to the location I found them at on Chancery Lane. Although their space is small, their shop sits on a darling little street and they could not have been more helpful with my inquiry. They seemed knowledgeable and interested in helping me solve my repair challenge. Store was bright, contemporary compared to street side options that you see everywhere and the best to museum quality that I think I was going to find (again, short of walking into Gagosian or another high end gallery and sniffing around for a referall) Now although I opted in the end to do nothing and live with the damage at the moment, I would have no hesitation to take my artwork to Lee Wah to be reframed. They seemed friendly, kind and professional.

Here you can find ribbons, trimmings and embellishments, but also gift boxes and embroidery hoops. Cross stich patterns and fake flowers. I walked out with almost 200 yards of ribbon for a little (a very little) over HKD50 - bargain! Like all shops in SSP, Tak Cheung Co obviously understands the value of a good business card - you WILL need help to find the same store twice. But theirs is one of the most helpful I've collected on many visits to the area. In fact, it's the one I present to taxi drivers whenever I go to SSP, just so I know where I am when I start and can orientate myself for the rest of the expedition, kind of. Of course one then has to pop in to the store to see what's on offer ... It would be rude not to.

Wing Shing Photo Supplies is probably the best photography store in Hong Kong. It is neither one of…read morethe giant chain stores, selling stock-standard consumer units, nor is it one of these local photography stores, tucked in the back of a computer centre somewhere. What you get with Wing Shing, is a very well stocked shop, staff that are more knowledgeable than in the Fortress or Broadway, but all of it with a slightly better safety-net then the local mom and pop stores in Sham Shui Po. Don't get me wrong, shopping here is still quite difficult, especially if you're not a Chinese speaker. The staff, whilst knowledgeable, can be pretty grotty and aggressive, but just let this pass over you, do your browsing, and buy if you want or need to. The shop stocks brand new camera ranges; Canon, Nikon, Go Pro, etc., lenses, bags, tripod, filters, as well as some of the more obscure photography accessories; dollies, pro-sumer DV cameras, microphones, waterproof cases. There is also an excellent lens departments, with both new and used lenses. The staff here are particularly knowledgeable and geeky, and will be up to run you through the difference in products whether they be the known brands or Chinese copies. If you know exactly what you want to buy, and perhaps are after some of the less quality critical products, like bags or clear glass filters, you may be better off going to the mom and pop stores in Sham Shui Po, which will be significantly cheaper. However, if you want to have a browse and play with all the camera kits, and get a bit of decent advice, then Wing Shing would be a good first port of call.

I imagine Sunrise as the neighborhood photo shop of Sham Shui Po gone by. They've got film SLRs, TLRs, rangefinders, and a number of compact cameras. It's very easy to get to from Exit C2 of Sham Shui Po station. Just keep going straight for five blocks until you reach a pedestrian crossing. From there, cross the pedestrian crossing and spot a small shop that has cameras upon cameras by the window. The interior is small and cramped, I think it can fit at most five people inside the shop. If you just want to get your film prints on a CD or in print, go straight to the right side (where the computer is). For prints, ask for optical finishing and say what size you want your prints to be. I convert a large number of my slides and negatives here, they come out at 18 megabytes per frame for only 60 dollars! When I purchase a medium format camera (hopefully this year), I'll still get my 120mm film finished at Sunrise. Their service is fast and affordable, plus the staff are very friendly. I also purchased a Russian lens from them once, near to closing time. Imagine that, the shop was fifteen minutes to closing and there were still three people inside the shop. I thought I would get some alone time with the staff to talk about the different models of the lens that I would be buying. Nevertheless, I already knew what I wanted to buy beforehand. I inspected the lens for any dents or major scratches to the front and rear element. It was cosmetically sound so I mounted it on my camera. All apertures work and the lens is 99.9 percent clean, aside from a minor scratch at the barrel. A word of caution: Sunrise works on consignment so it is very important to inspect the item carefully (or get a friend who knows their photography equipment). Everything is transacted in cash and there is no receipt. As such, there is no refund or exchange policy.

Prices are reasonable, but not cheap by any means. The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They showed me all the workings of the camera and how to use it. I was encouraged to try the camera and and shoot a roll of film, which they developed in less than half an hour, and told me if the camera did not work properly they would fix and or replace it. Overall, my experience was brilliant and I'll definitely go back for any film camera needs next time I'm in Hong Kong.

Artland seems to focus more on supplies for painters or drawing artists. I noticed a good supply of paints, water colours, markers, and coloured pencils. If you're into Crayola products, they have a decent selection. You can find things like embroidery wool, but the cross stitch patterns they offer are limited to subjects like floral bouquets and landscapes. Same with clothing; you could find a few things like fabric paints or markers for t-shirts, but it's not that plentiful. They did have a sizeable section dedicated to art books, though. In the end, I got what I needed- coloured pencils to fuel my new short-term hobby before my baby arrives: adult colouring books! :)

With the limited space in Hong Kong, I understand that it's hard to stuff thousands of products into a 2000sq ft shop. There's really a lot of different types of products, however, the brand selection is rather limited. A lot of Staedtler, Primarily Daler-Rowney, I guess that's how Hong Kong art stores are? There's various high end products for professional artists too. One thing I didn't like about the store was I also found some products to be a bit scattered. Like they had a calligraphy section by the counter but also at another aisle, and Chinese calligraphy in another aisle. Many products like paints were organised by brands rather than by type. Yet many products were organised by products too. I also found the store to be slightly overpriced. The Pilot Parallel pen was $95 and it is only at $85 the Commercial Press in CWB, and $80 in CN. OH well. Their student level water colour is also quite expensive, Daler-Rowney Aquafine at $455. I can practically buy the artist colours at that price (On amazon at least) Paper and sketchbooks were nearly all Daler-Rowney as well. I just wished there's more variety in brands. However, this place is probably the best on Hong Kong Island and it will do the job if you need anything for your art supplies/project, etc. They also opened a mini gallery of a photographer's work. Also the hours aren't very friendly. Closed on Sundays, closed 5pm on Saturdays and 7pm on weekdays. And you know when you have such a bad customer service experience that it colors your whole day? That was my experience today. I had a poster framed here and they quoted me $450 --mind you I ordered the cheapest frame and glass possible. I talked them down to $400, which I thought was still overpriced. I picked it up two days later. That very day I go home, put the picture (still in bubble wrap and with strings tying It up) on a table with very little force and the glass shatters to bits. Now, I can go off on the lack of customer service in in Hong Kong, but this place takes the cake. When I brought in the frame today (my first opportunity after it broke over the weekend to bring it back) he wanted to charge me $150 to fix it. I said it basically broke on its own. He said "not possible." --I had my assistant call to reason with him in Cantonese and he argued with her. What happened to work with integrity? What happened to backing up your craft? For a place that is in the middle of soho I felt like this guy had it out for me and other expats. Or maybe he is just really angry, hates his job and takes it out on others. I took the picture to another framing place and they quoted me $100. Avoid this place at all costs.
