I love cake, and I have a problem with some cafés serving ridiculously small, practically pea-sized…read more(okay, maybe not really!) cakes at sky-high prices. $45 for a piece of cake I can finish in five bites or less? No, thank you. And that's where Italian Tomato comes in. If you've bought a slice of cake at Italian Tomato, or even passed by it, you'll know that their cakes are strangely massive. They are approximately twice the size of regular cakes from say, Agnes B, and not as expensive too! Italian Tomato always has a range of cakes on display, such as the classic cheesecake strawberry and cream, etc. I recently saw that they have a white peach cake, which sounds really interesting! To me, peaches are of a very soft, delicate flavor, so I can't imagine how they cakes that are peach-flavored would taste like. One of my favorite Italian Tomato cakes is the strawberry and cream sponge cake. It has a couple of strawberries - yes, whole strawberries - on the cake, which is really generous! The strawberries are very sweet and the cake itself is soft and creamy. The two make a great dynamic duo and I'm craving it as we speak! Another favorite of mine is the Black Forest. I used to eat the one from Saint Honore all the time when I was a kid, so bite after bite of any Black Forest cake just brings back a rush of memories. This isn't just any Black Forest cake, though. Like the strawberries in the cream sponge cake, they're very generous with the cherries here and you can taste them with every bite. The chocolate to cream ratio is just right, and the chocolate shavings add a kind of nice, contrasting texture to the otherwise very smooth cake. This is a great place to buy cake if you're sick of the overpriced cakes game. If you're at the Italian Tomato at Yata in Sha Tin and you can't wait (like me), you can buy your cake and eat it immediately at the nearby food court. Oh, and just a random musing - why's Italian Tomato called ITALIAN Tomato? I'm pretty sure it's a Japanese brand... And speaking of that, why tomato? They aren't even used in cakes! Don't let my random musings about its name throw you off though - I guarantee you'll like the cakes here, and if you don't, well, then it's on me!

Went on a day trip with a friend to Sai Kung to explore, and we had to stop by Sai Kung Bakery,…read moreespecially because I'm a fiend for pineapple buns. I've had plenty during my semester abroad, but this was hands down the best one I've tried. The exterior was perfectly crispy and sweet, and the bread underneath was soft and fluffy. If I had more time, I honestly would've ordered a second. There are chairs and tables outside, but you need to order a drink if you want to sit. Service was quick and they have a lot of other options. My friend and I both gave the pineapple bun a 10/10. I'd definitely come back for this again one day.

The pineapple buns with butter are served warm so the slab of butter in between the bun melts as you work your way through it. The top crust is so crispy while the interior of the bun remains soft and fluffy. This is incredibly hard to achieve. But most importantly, the flavor balance is everything. I admit it's almost like a heart attack in a bun, but they somehow don't make you feel guilty eating it. The butter just melds with the bun in a way that's not disgustingly oily? I've been on a hunt for pineapple buns with butter that are as good as this place but I haven't been successful. I also got their garlic bread, but I think you can skip it. It's very crispy and big, but not particularly notable. You should try their Portuguese egg tarts though, especially if you see that they're fresh out of the oven! They also sell hot and cold drinks here, like almond drink. Don't be shocked if the workers display an attitude... this is a well-known problem among HK service workers, so don't take it personally.

I also think it's fairly dry, so make sure you have something to drink! Store is extremely fast and efficient and has been around forever. It's quite small and cramped inside, so order quickly and have the right amount of change ready. There are lots of benches to eat on outside.

I have literally stood in the rain (with an umbrella, or course) waiting for fresh ones to be baked (since they were sold out). The pineapple buns have raisins, walnuts, and sunflower seeds within. Not a lot, but definitely a good surprise when you are eating the bun. Crispy outside, soft inside. Heaven. Egg tarts - They have both the flaky crust and butter/cookie crust. Both are very good. Just the right amount of crust and the custard within is nice and soft. And they often have fresh batches as they sell quickly. They have many different kinds of breads and buns sold too. One of the unique ones I have seen is the pineapple bun with the BBQ pork stuffed inside. They also have very reasonable prices for cakes, generally under $100. You can get a yummy Chinese cake for about $50-60, but all depends on size and flavor.
