I'm a bit of an animal liker, not an animal lover per se, a liker! I like them to an extent, but…read moreonly until they poo on my living room floor. However, I do get the need to provide for our animal brethren, and think that Whiskers N Paws is a great one stop shop for al your pet needs, providing they are cats or dogs. Located in Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau, Whiskers N Paws has a large store filled with all sorts of pet products, raging from the necessary foods, care products, bedding, through to more playful items like squeaky toys and exercise apparatus. The store is spacious and well laid out, so there is plenty of room to wander around, with pets and kids. As well as the store, there is a terrace and play area out the back for your pets to run around in and be sociable. It costs HKD60 per pet, but is nicely kept and a bit of a treat in the city. The terrace area also serves as a "showroom" for the numerous pet adoption days. Kirsten's Zoo runs a cat adoption day every 3rd Sunday of the month, and Hong Kong Dog Rescue runs a puppy day every Sunday. If you are thinking about getting a pet, I would thoroughly recommend these adoption days as a first port of call. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, but there don't seem to be very many around, so you may have to chase around a bit looking for help. The products are reasonably priced, and the range is plentiful. It's nice to be able to come to one big out of town store for everything, rather than numerous mom and pop stores in town.

If you're car-less (like me), there's no way you'd enjoy lugging a 15-pound bag of dog food across town on MTR unless you truly enjoy suffering and sweating profusely. But Whiskers N Paws delivers, and they do it for free - at least on HK island, though I'm not sure if there's a minimum spend. They also carry my Shar Pei's favorite brand of dog food, the Canadian brand Orijen. I was starting to worry that Sasha would have to switch to a different label after moving to HK, and as it turns out only a handful of retailers carry this premium brand. I was also able to scoop up some Earthbath shampoo and wipes (love this natural Californian brand!), a new bed while we await for the fancier one to arrive via shipping container, a banana toy with squeaker, and some premium freeze-dried treats. This may seem excessive, but my pup deserves all of this - and more - following a 15-hour flight! This store with a natural product bent also offers grooming services, pet care classes, and they host events such as adoption days. But get this: they've recently created a permanent cat homing station! This dedicated space shows off beautiful cats to potential feline parents. How's that for causing all the feels? I think that Sasha and I will soon need to make a field trip out of it and visit Whiskers N Paws! Thanks for carrying the first-rate products that Sasha enjoys so much, and for making them so accessible.

Another example of how the Yelp app helped me stumble across something totally random, totally…read morecool, and totally local: Paws & Claws. At the end of last year, I was mulling over the possibility of bringing a pet to HK and wasn't sure if there were even enough stores to support its needs with food, supplies, and everything else. When I found the random listing for P&C, I decided to check it out. The store is indeed small. From cat food to cat care, they were stocked full of all things feline. They had a good number of international products that I had yet to see in certain pet stores and the prices seemed reasonable. Sometimes pet stores are poorly maintained and have that "animal odor" but this one was clean and extremely presentable. The owner, Isabella was super sweet and was able to answer my questions about laws, care products, and even where to find certain breeds of cats (at other stores!). In the store front, they had a small number of British Shorthair kittens running around and playing with each other. Her own cat, a 6 year old British short hair, was probably the friendliest cat I've met. I think I could've spent another hour in the store easily just perusing cat products. Disclaimer: It's been a long time since I've been here. I'm not even sure if Paws & Claws is still around, but if I have any cat needs, I'm for sure heading here.

This shop makes me think that some think that human hair salons should have their tools in a nice display as well. All of the razors, combs, and brushes that they sell and use on dogs are behind a glass display like fine china! There are also porcelain pet figurines in the window and around the edge of the store. They, of course, do grooming in this shop and the prices are nicely displayed on a large board in English and Chinese. They have different prices for the different breeds of dogs. I was curious on pricing for my poodle, but I didn't see poodle anywhere. The prices were actually under miniature poodle for my pet, and were displayed neatly on the board according to the services provided. The teddy bear cut and style included ear cleaning, nails, clip, bathing and styling for $780 HKD. The summer clip was $750. I'm not completely sold on the whole poodle styling especially considering that my other dog is a mutt, that doesn't even need his hair clipped. However, if you are into having your four legged best friend look tip top, this is a good fit for you. The tools are available as well if you want to do the grooming yourself.

I'm a human being and as such pet stores do not light my bulb. The thing is I have two cats that I am totally in love with (one of them anyway, the other one is just annoying). And love makes fools of us all. For example it had me walking into Pet Line thinking, I wonder if one of the cats would appreciate a toy or some catnip? Realistically speaking they wouldn't have a clue how the cat nip arrived, "Oooh that's cool, let's roll around in it... then eat it." Or the toy, "Oooh that's cool, let's scratch it... then eat it." Not a single thank you for the giver. Forgetting about my selfish cats for the time being Pet Line, as far as I know, provides pet owners with just about anything a pet would need. Toys, big cushions or little homes, a range of food, some juicy snacks, and cleaning soaps. The set up is pretty standard with everything organized by category. However, the entire time we were browsing in the shop the shop keeper was checking out the newest gossip on facebook, only paying any attention to us when I asked for a business card. Not that that is a bad thing, I'd rather that than some one hovering over my shoulder! By the time I left I had bought a small pack of catnip and a tiny scratch pad in the hopes that the cats would use that instead of the sofa. I'll be back again during Christmas time for another small prezzie - mainly because I don't know where else to go!

The salesperson was very friendly and enquired about pets that I owned, then wanted to help me find the right products for my dog. The have a variety of natural treats made from all sorts of animals and other goodies that are healthy for your dog. I have to admit that I was really hungry when I entered the store and the doggy baked goods they provide look pretty tasty. They have cute little slices of cake, and cookies for your dogs that are made locally and in the U.S. This is also the place you should go to when you want to get your doggy birthday cake, because they have an assortment of different sizes. Along with baked goods and treats, they also carry a small stock of pet products including leashes, grooming products, food, and toys. If you're looking for a way to spoil your dog, forget to stop into this shop for yummy treats and excellent service!

Located in the Ferry Street area of Jordon, its not too difficult to find. I would suggest getting off at Austin Station from the West Rail line instead of taking the MTR to Jordon. Few things I've noticed about this place is that here are pets here in crates all the time. The store pets don't seem to get any time outside of their crates, which makes me a bit upset. Dogs, Cats, Birds, they're all just trapped in their little crates watching the day pass. They offer a good range of dried and wet treats for your furry friends. I go with the Western goods that they carry such as Greenies and Zeal products. The prices are fair and they generally have a good stock of them at all times. I do commend the fact that they carry a good selection of dried dog food. Instead of heading to chaotic Mong Kok, pet street, This is a good alternative. From what I remember, they carry all the big names. If there is a product you are interested in that they do not carry, sometimes they will offer to order it for you. That is a good service, but its not always that they would do that for you. I give this place only three stars and not four because when my dog came for his normal grooming appointment one time, the experience wasn't good. They usually have very gentle staff handling the pets, but this time around, the lady taking care of my pup was a new. I kept an eye on her while she was grooming him, and while rinsing the shampoo off him, some shampoo got in his eye. I was worried but was told that the shampoo is very gentle and it there was no need to worry. Two days later, I notice discharge coming from his eye and brought him to the vet. Turns out, the shampoo made a small tear in his cornea and had given him an eye infection. I was gutted. I only hope they will train their staff more throughly to properly groom dogs.

The store clerks were courteous, and helped me decide on what size gate to get, because I hadn't made any measurements. When I got home, the gate was actually a bit small for my hallway, so I had to return it. They didn't have any larger gates, so they allowed me return it for a store credit. I ended up buying greenies, pet wipes, shampoo, and a dog chew for the same price. There is a pretty good variety of products in this store for dogs, but it caters more to cats. There are about 20 cages with cats for sale in the store, and I've seen them pretty full. They also offer grooming services in the back for a decent price. The service here can be hit or miss depending on who's working in the store for the day. I've gotten great service on some days and no so great on others. There is an ample variety of pet supplies in this store for covering your basic needs. Mega Pets should be a cat owner's delight.
