Now, you can head to any chain of QB House, and get a perfectly adequate cut price cut in 10 minutes; or you can go for the full monty at The Barber Shop in Central, and smash some serious cash for a great pamper. However, the savvy shopper will go to Hennessy Plaza, 164-166 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai. On the first floor there are two salons, you want to go to the one on the left as you look at them from the elevator lobby. This place is so local, there is no English name! Once you get in there, the staff are extremely friendly. They'll sit you down and patiently understand your hand signals, before ploughing in and giving you a great haircut. But, haircuts aside, it's the frills and thrills that keep me coming back to these guys. After you are beautifully coiffed within an inch of your life, comes the best bit - a hot towel facial and a straight razor shave, you're not gonna get that at QB House! Be warned though, it can be quite nerve-wracking. You see, the barbers here are the "Shanghai masters". This means that they are older than Moses, and they are shakier than a Red Bull swilling ugly bloke asking out a hot girl. However, once that razor (and your throat) is in their hands, the skill and precision is phenomenal. Masters they are! They'll have you smoother than a babe's butt in moments. They'll even duo the mono brow and tope the nose hairs - nice! And, if that ain't service enough, the lovely lady cashier will finish you off with a shampoo, condition and blow-dry (easy boys, I said blow-dry). The best thing with her is, it doesn't matter how much hair you have left on your bonce that actually needs washing, she'll slather a load of shampoo in, and massage your head for a good long while like it was a pound of bread dough. Finally, you are cut, you are shaved, and and you are washed - now the cherry on the top. The whole kit and caboodle only costs HKD88, you're practically robbing them! Trust me on this one guys. Our ladies have the spas, and the facials, and the mani-pedis. We get this; a shaky guy with a weapon - you gotta love it!

First thing first, my hair is hard to handle. Thick and messy and goes all directions. I'm usually pretty concerned whenever I go for a new hairstylist. Well not this time. I was here at 3pm. Quite a few customers here even at this off hours. Staff washed my hair and Mandy greeted me and asked me how to work on the hair. On one hand, you could see she's very curious about my hair (I know right), and on the other hand, she did listen to my request and we spent time talking about the requirements before the first cut. It was a breeze. Like the new hairstyle. Nothing over the top, yet very summer-y. You can get a haircut and shave from your barber. Someone is available to do a Shanghai pedicure if you don't take care of your feet and spend a lot time barefoot. Some of their barbers have worked there for decades and only serve regular clients in a private room. When not in use the private room is open to mostly hotel guests. Your pampering starts with an offer of coffee or proper tea w biscuit. Come in early to unwind. I believe a beer is available from downstairs in the late afternoon for you after work types who need a cut or shave. It's very nice to pamper yourself once in a while in a gentleman's environment.

The guy who did my pedicure was very nice, asked how long my nails want to be (yes they do cut nails and even put nail polish on if you like), then carefully lifted my feet and started shaving skin, from bottom to top. I've never experienced such thorough shaving that I felt like my feet were 2lbs lighter. To be fair it's not the cheapest pedicure, about a little over $100, but given I'm only coming to Hong Kong every 3 years or so, it's very worth it.

I came here for my…read morevirgin facial (minds out of the gutters, guys) and tried the Steam Facial, which set me back HKD 950 for 60mins of steaming, cleaning and blackhead picking. The therapist was very attentive and careful and made sure I was at ease at all times, even though my eyes watered like a river when she attacked my blackheads. For you guys who are also spa virgins, the full routine went like this: 1. Shirts off (there's a towel over you) and lie down, lights dim and the therapist cleans your face and neck twice while you doze off because it actually is a comfortable face massage. 2. Exfoliation. She continues to massage your face, this time with exfoliation cream, and it's done very gently so you stay asleep. 3. She covers your eye area with some eye masks and probably to prevent you from seeing what comes next. 4. You hear the steam machine and start feeling the heat on your face. Feels a bit like the sun is moving your way; you wonder if it will overheat and melt your eyes. 5. It doesn't. But the lights go on so it really does feel like the sun coming your way now. But nothing compared to what comes next. 6. She tells you "extraction now, this might hurt". And yep, she don't lie. Imagine someone pricking different areas of your face with a needle, sometimes light sometimes hard depending on the severity of the blackhead in that spot. Your eyes are still covered luckily, so she doesn't see that your eyes are watering now. Good news is it gets better apparently when your skin is better come second time. 7. Quick face mask session, where you can take relief and relax. You are done. 8. Some spots stay red for a day and then your skin gets smoother and looks clearer too. A thousand bucks and hour is pretty expensive for an hour, but the effect was noticeable and in my opinion I will be coming back for the mini version - express/rejuvenation facials which are half the time and price. Extras: - They have a range of their own brand grooming products. The shaving stuff remains expensive, but the face products like moisturizers and cleansers are actually not. - They are quite reputable for their Hemmingway treatment - a facial/massage combo that comes with a Bloody Mary, designed to spa you back to sobriety. All for a cool HKD 1,700 in 2 hours. Hey, if you can pay to get that drunk, you can ball out to restoration too.
