This would be the place to go if you are an ex-pat looking for foods from home, particularly from the US and Europe. This location is on the second floor of New Town Plaza Phase 1. Being from the US, this store does not quite appeal as much to me, but just checked it due to curiousity. The prices on the US goods were understandably high. But they do carry some interesting items. Particularly those from Europe that make me want to grab them here since I wouldn't be able to find them back in the US. There are also a few food stands here selling some interesting fare. There is a stand selling matcha desserts for instance. While perusing I came across a fridge full of freshly squeezed juices that I thought was cool. Grabbed a bottle of guava and passion fruit juice for HK$24. Not the cheapest place, but the bottle design was interesting and I needed some refreshment. If you get it, be sure to drink it quickly as fresh juices don't last for long. If you happen to be at New Town Plaza, city'super is worth perusing through. Interesting products found here, albeit at higher prices than elsewhere.

I walked out of here with a nice bottle of vintage Bordeaux, cured meats and toy's for the kids. One stop shop and the service here is impeccable, I had an issue with waiting in line with my grocery and did not have enough hands to push my kid's stroller thru the line with me, I had asked if someone can help me and one of the grocery helpers told me that they can stand next to the stroller with my kids while I finish paying and check out.

Well, nice ones…read more Among closest ones to my place are also some ParknShops and Wellcomes (these last ones always funnily smelling of durians...). They are tiny, underground and a little crappy. For a quick purchase they're fine but if I'm shopping for the week or I'm after something especial, I head to Taste in Hopewell Centre. It's conveniently located on my way from work so it's usually in the evening when you can find me there. It's the only Taste supermarket in the North part of the Island (the other one being in Stanley), it opens early in the morning (8am) and has parking space. Right now it's undergoing renovation, but you can still shop as normal. They are relocating a take away area (sushi, sandwiches, salads, bakery and hot food) on the first floor with the main supermarket underground. It's big enough that you can find pretty much everything - there is a butchery, a cheese counter, a fresh fish counter, plenty of fruit and vegetables (and some of them cheaper than at wet markets I'm afraid), a shelf devoted to organic and locally grown veggies, a LOT of dairy products, a LOT of frozen foods...and on the other side there are the canned foods, bakery, nuts, drinks, etc., pretty much you can think of. There's even an area for alcoholic drinks and in the main aisle you can find especial offers. If you need something for your kitchen say, a pot or a pan, they also have an aisle just for that. Price wise, I still buy some goods elsewhere because they are better and cheaper: nuts and fish, for example, but they have excellent grass-fed beef from New Zealand (branded Greenlea) and some frozen veggies that I use for specific dishes. Avoid weekends, as in any given supermarket really.

I also love that they have lots of cut up fruits to choose from, which is convenient for tourists. The website said they open at 9am but they were already opened when I walked past at 8am. And they have applepay, which is not too common in HK. They are located in the basement level of Isquare and is only 1 level above the mtr station.

Fortunately this was not too hard to find after spending some time walking from Yuen Long train station and wandering around. It was on a fairly busy section of a street closed to car traffic, where it can be considered as a short mini night market like strip. One look and you can tell this is a very old traditional business with a niche offering (and of course targeting a niche audience). Lots of very old school Cantonese classic dessert/snacks that are not sugared up the yin yang like a deep fried bacon beignet. They offer several samples, and I had the pleasure of trying several varieties, of which I instantly became a fan. Their signature peanut candy, is significantly tastier than the peanut brittle candy (e.g. See's Candies). Perhaps it is a result of using the Asian variety of peanut (likely by way of Indonesia) or a particular variety that has a more intense flavor than the ones grown in America (usually larger, less flavor even if you roast them). There is a nut candy plastered with black sesame seeds, that one is also quite a winner. The most interesting one has to be the candy made primarily with pumpkin seeds. It is hard to describe the texture but is unique in that I have never seen it before. It was an even a bigger pleasure to be able to see one of the employees taking a huge batch that was cooked, and laid out in one big giant goopy ball, and he was trying frantically to stir the mixture. My guess is that the next step, it has to be roasted, cooled then carefully divided up (and formed into bite sized cubes). Hard to beat fresh, hand made good chit. Labor intensive, but not expensive at all. There are no preservatives in the candies, so they will last at most two months according to the staff. Perfect gifts for families locally, or even abroad. Please keep supporting these traditional local businesses. If we do not do our part to keep them alive, they will start dropping like flies, and all we will be left with are high priced fusion or western trendy restaurants and bling shops. Don't keep chasing the next food trend, understand and appreciate food culture and history. And hopefully everything will not be lost.

Farmer's markets to me are a great place to get local produce but then you also get stuff like hipster coffee, cucumber/avocado/kale water, and funky cheeses. But these wet markets are something else. Less refined, but feeling like the real deal. Here you walk around hanging cuts of meat and tanks of seafood. Take in that raw stench and realize that cow stomach hanging from a hook could be in your next bowl of noodles. Tai Po Hui is indoors with air conditioning, already one step above traditionally outdoor street stalls, but you still get that authentic feeling. Vendors are talk-shouting across the stands to each other. People are picking out the best cut of steak, the fattest fish, the plumpest chicken feet. This is where the neighborhood comes to shop, haggle, and grab cheap eats. I'm sure there are many other wet markets around Hong Kong, but this one is very large and very clean. The freshness of the food is remarkable. The shrimp are bouncing around on top of each other, the fish are still swimming energetically. And as someone who did not grow up in Hong Kong, I saw species I've never seen before, like beautiful Lilac-coloured clams and rose apples. I never went to the cooked food centre, but I'm sure it's as impressive and diverse as the ground level market. This feels like a common market for the common folk, but it can also be an exotic food journey for tourists. I cannot recommend going to a wet market enough and Tai Po Hui Market is a great choice. It's truly a unique experience to get a taste of local culture, figuratively and literally. This, of course, is juxtaposed by the fact that the parking lot is an absolute mess of Mercedes, BMWs, and all manners of rich cars from the nearby millionaires who like to live in Tai Po. It's a simple fisherman's village turned travel destination without being touristy. There's lots of great shops and restaurants to walk through, hidden back alleys where the locals go, it's nothing overly stimulating. But I see it as perfect, and throughout my travels in Hong Kong this the one place I can spend an entire day just breathing it all in. I truly miss it.

I wouldn't say that it's just a convenience store because it had a bit more merchandise than just grab and go snacks. There were cookies, Candies, and 3 in 1 coffee packets. I was surprised to see marshmallows with Brown from Line Friends. I had to get it for Kathy H.! LOL! We looked in another 360° and found Brown marshmallows, but no Cony... Sad... Haha! This store was a bit crowded with narrow aisles, customers, and staff restocking the shelves. It was an educational experience!

Snacks galore…read more.. There's something about it that satisfy any type of issues that you're hungry, anxious or just a craving. Here they have just about any type of fun items and though it's not massive it's a lovely place to find something that even the local convenience store won't have. Staff here is always busy restocking items as there is a lot to see and what a fun place to explore what Hong Kong along with various other countries together share the same love of snacking.
